We present in this work the performance evaluation of MPEG-4 video transmission with our proposed single rate multicast protocol named Adaptive Smooth Multicast Protocol (ASMP). ASMP key attributes are: a) adaptive scalability to large sets of receivers, b) TCP-friendly behavior, c) high bandwidth utilization, and finally d) smooth transmission rates which are suitable for multimedia applications. We evaluate the performance of ASMP under an integrated simulation environment which extends ns-2 and Evalvid-RA to the multicast domain with the use of the RTP/RTCP protocols. Simulations conducted under this environment combine the measurements of network-centric along with video quality metrics. This "joint" evaluation process provides a better understanding of the benefits and limitations of any proposed protocol for multimedia data transmission. © 2010 IEEE.

Long Term Evolution (LTE), the next-generation network beyond 3G, is designed to support the explosion in demand for bandwidth-hungry multimedia services that are already experienced in wired networks. To support Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Services (MBMS), LTE offers functionality to transmit MBMS over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN), where a time-synchronized common waveform is transmitted from multiple cells for a given duration. This significantly improves the Spectral Efficiency (SE) compared to conventional MBMS operation. The achieved SE is mainly determined by the Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) utilized by the LTE physical layer. In this paper we propose and evaluate four approaches for the selection of the MCS that will be utilized for the transmission of the MBSFN data. The evaluation of the approaches is performed for different users' distribution and from SE perspective. Based on the SE measurement, we determine the most suitable approach for the corresponding users' distribution. © 2010 IEEE.

In a wavelength-routed optical network, the signal remains in the optical domain over the entire route (lightpath) from source to destination node. Thus, while propagating through the network, the signal quality may degrade as it encounters physical impairments. In this paper, we study the establishment of new connections in such a network in the presence of amplifier optical power constraints. In particular, a Multicost Impairment Aware Online RWA (IA-RWA) algorithm is extended to include amplifier power constraints. The extended algorithm accounts not only for the channel utilization in the network but also for the amplifiers' possible saturation, which change as new connections are established or released, in order to calculate the noise variances that correspond to physical impairments on the links. We find that when these effects are taken into account the two algorithms achieve similar performance when the amplifiers operate in the linear region. In the case, however, where the amplifiers are saturated, the extended algorithm exhibits better performance compared with the previously proposed algorithm, in terms of blocking probability and frequency of reroutings required. Managing corporate Information technology (IT) environment becomes increasingly complex as server logic architecture becomes distributed and the number of manageable entities increases. At the same time, the open source community has not yet produced a reliable systems and network management solution, even though there are open source initiatives specializing in individual fields of remote management. This paper presents OpenRSM, an integrated remote management system created by integrating individual open source initiatives and augmenting them to support additional functionality so that a lightweight integrated systems and network management solution is produced. © 2010 IEEE.

3rd Generation Partnership Project's (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) is focused on enhancing the Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA). Evolved-Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service (e-MBMS) uses Multimedia Broadcast over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) operation in order to improve its performance. In MBSFN operation, data are transmitted simultaneously over the air from multiple tightly time-synchronized cells. Raptor codes have been standardized as the main application layer Forward Error Correction (FEC) method for e-MBMS due to the advanced error protection they offer and their overall performance. In this study, we investigate the application of FEC in MBSFN-enabled LTE cellular networks and we propose a new scheme that takes into account the properties of MBSFN in order to provide a more efficient operation of FEC during e-MBMS transmissions. The proposed scheme is compared with other file recovery methods and is evaluated against various network parameters in a realistic simulation environment. © 2010 IEEE.

The Web is overcrowded with news articles, an overwhelming information source both with its amount and diversity. Assigning news articles to similar groups, on the other hand, provides a very powerful data mining and manipulation technique for topic discovery from text documents. In this paper, we are investigating the application of a great spectrum of clustering algorithms, as well as similarity measures, to news articles that originate from the Web and compare their efficiency for use in an online Web news service application. We also examine the effect of preprocessing on clustering. Our experimentation showed that k-means, despite its simplicity, accompanied with preliminary steps for data cleaning and normalizing, gives better aggregate results when it comes to efficiency. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper falls in the topic of qLPV state-space model based control design in which LMIs are used to optimize the multi-objective control performance. In this paper we investigate how the convex hull of the polytopic model influences the feasibility of the LMI based control design and the resulting control performances. We examine these influences through the control design of the two dimensional aeroelastic system's example. First we define various TP type polytopic model representations of a wing section whose vertices define different convex hulls. In the second step we investigate how these models lead to different control performances. © 2010 IEEE.

The Tensor Product (TP) model transformation is a recently proposed technique for transforming given Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) state-space models into polytopic model form, namely, to parameter-varying convex combination of Linear Time Invariant (LTI) systems. The main advantage of the TP model transformation is that it is executable in a straightforward way and the Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) based control design frameworks can immediately be applied to the resulting polytopic models to yield controllers with tractable and guaranteed performance. The main contribution of this paper is that it represents the friction of a DC servo drive in TP model form, automatically designs LMI based controller for friction compensation. The reference signal compensation is also based on the TP model transformation. The results were simulated for speed control of the DC servo drive and were compared to other control techniques. © 2010 IEEE.
