In future transparent optical networks, it is important to consider the impact of physical impairments in the routing and wavelengths assignment process, to achieve efficient connection provisioning. In this paper, we use classical multi-objective optimization (MOO) strategies and particularly genetic algorithms to jointly solve the impairment aware RWA (IA-RWA) problem. Fiber impairments are indirectly considered through the insertion of the path length and the number of common hops in the optimization process. It is shown that blocking is greatly improved, while the obtained solutions truly converge towards the Pareto front that constitutes the set of global optimum solutions. We have evaluated our findings, using an Q estimator tool, that calculates the signal quality of each path analytically.

The voting rules proposed by Dodgson and Young are both designed to find the alternative closest to being a Condorcet winner, according to two different notions of proximity; the score of a given alternative is known to be hard to compute under either rule. In this paper, we put forward two algorithms for approximating the Dodgson score: an LP-based randomized rounding algorithm and a deterministic greedy algorithm, both of which yield an O(logm) approximation ratio, where m is the number of alternatives; we observe that this result is asymptotically optimal, and further prove that our greedy algorithm is optimal up to a factor of 2, unless problems in NP have quasi-polynomial time algorithms. Although the greedy algorithm is computationally superior, we argue that the randomized rounding algorithm has an advantage from a social choice point of view. Further, we demonstrate that computing any reasonable approximation of the ranking produced by Dodgson's rule is NP-hard. This result provides a complexity-theoretic explanation of sharp discrepancies that have been observed in the Social Choice Theory literature when comparing Dodgson elections with simpler voting rules. Finally, we show that the problem of calculating the Young score is NP-hard to approximate by any factor. This leads to an inapproximability result for the Young ranking.

Multistage Interconnection Networks (MINs) provide efficient communication resources between network components in an appealing cost/performance relation. Consequently, they have been widely used on Internet connections such as ATM and gigabit Ethernet switches, terabit routers as well as for interconnecting parallel systems. In this paper a novel analytical method for providing performance evaluation on MINs is presented under multicast environment. The proposed analysis was applied on various network size MINs constructed by variable buffer-length switching elements (SEs) per network stage, supporting mixed traffic patterns such as unicast and multicast, under various offered loads in uniform traffic conditions. The applied multicasting policy, where a packet is copied and transmitted when only both destination buffers are available has not been considered insofar by former models. This mechanism, which is called "full-multicast" was employed by all SEs using the "cell replication while routing" (CRWR) *** proposed architecture, which is thoroughly analyzed by our novel analytical model, can be also useful in performance study and development of other Internet communication links supporting multicast traffic.

In optical burst switching (OBS) networks one of the most challenging problems is to provide service differentiation. The lack of buffering in the intermediate nodes, makes QoS provisioning in OBS networks a difficult problem to address. In this work, we propose a scheduling algorithm that supports QoS based on preemptions, which are controlled by a novel preemption policy. Our claims are validated by analytical modelling and experimental analysis through simulations using data belonging to two different classes of service - best effort and video streaming data. Performance evaluation is based on throughput measurements for best effort class, and perceived quality metrics like PSNR and MOS scores for the video streaming class.

Abstract The computerized modeling of cognitive visual information has been a research field of great interest in the past several decades. The research field is interesting not only from a biological perspective, but also from an engineering point of view when systems are developed that aim to achieve similar goals as biological cognitive systems. This paper briefly describes a general framework for the extraction and systematic storage of low-level visual features, and demonstrates its applicability in image categorization using a linear categorization algorithm originally developed for the characterization of text documents. The performance of the algorithm together with the newly developed feature array was evaluated using the Caltech 101 database. Extremely high (95% and higher) success rates were achieved when distinguishing between pairs of categories using independent test images. Efforts were made to scale up the number of categories using a hierarchical, branch-and-bound decision tree, with limited success.

Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) epitomizes the increasing popularity of enhanced end-user experience in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), since it allows the economical delivery of multimedia services to a large number of users. MBMS multicast supports both Pomt-to-Point (PTP) and Point-to-Multipoint (PTM) modes in order to confront the strict resource limitations in wireless environments and improve efficiency during data transmission. The aim of this paper is to highlight the performance enhancements of MBMS multicasting over the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and underline the need for its integration in MBMS specifications. HSDPA can play an instrumental role in positioning MBMS services as a key enabler for true Mobile Broadband. Under this prism, we investigate the provision of MBMS services over HSDPA, through a direct comparison between HSDPA and Release '99 bearers. Since downlink transmission power is the most limited resource in UMTS networks, the evaluation is performed via an analytical dimensioning of the MBMS transmission power both in macrocells and microcells. Simulation results reveal that HSDPA can significantly optimize MBMS power allocation, bring more capacity and, consequently, enable the mass-market delivery of rich multimedia services in mobile networks.

A search for diphoton events with large missing transverse energy is presented. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.1 pb−1. No excess of such events is observed above the standard model background prediction. In the context of a specific model with one universal extra dimension with compactification radius R and gravity-induced decays, values of 1/R<729 GeV are excluded at 95% C. L., providing the most sensitive limit on this model to date.

EDGeS is an European funded Framework Program 7 project that aims to connect desktop and service grids together. While in a desktop grid, personal computers pull jobs when they are idle, in service grids there is a scheduler that pushes jobs to available resources. The work in EDGeS goes well beyond conceptual solutions to bridge these grids together: it reaches as far as actual implementation, standardization, deployment, application porting and training. One of the work packages of this project concerns monitoring the overall EDGeS infrastructure. Currently, this infrastructure includes two types of desktop grids, BOINC and XtremWeb, the EGEE service grid, and a couple of bridges to connect them. In this paper, we describe the monitoring effort in EDGeS: our technical approaches, the goals we achieved, and the plans for future work.

Measurements of charged particle distributions, sensitive to the underlying event, have been performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are based on data collected using a minimum-bias trigger to select proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 900 GeV and 7 TeV. The “underlying event” is defined as those aspects of a hadronic interaction attributed not to the hard scattering process, but rather to the accompanying interactions of the rest of the proton. Three regions are defined in azimuthal angle with respect to the highest transverse momentum charged particle in the event, such that the region transverse to the dominant momentum-flow is most sensitive to the underlying event. In each of these regions, distributions of the charged particle multiplicity, transverse momentum density, and average pT are measured. The data show generally higher underlying event activity than that predicted by Monte Carlo models tuned to pre-LHC data.

A measurement of the cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |ηγ|<1.37 and 1.52≤|ηγ|<1.81 in the transverse energy range 15≤ETγ<100 GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 880 nb−1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Photon candidates are identified by combining information from the calorimeters and from the inner tracker. Residual background in the selected sample is estimated from data based on the observed distribution of the transverse isolation energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate. The results are compared to predictions from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.
