Along with the widespread deployment of the third generation cellular networks, the fast-improving capabilities of the mobile devices, content and service providers are increasingly interested in supporting multicast communications over wireless networks and in Particular over Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). To this direction, the third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is currently standardizing the Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) framework of UMTS. 117 this paper, we present on overview of the MBMS multicast mode of UMTS. We analytically present the multicast mode of the MBMS and analyze its performance ill terms of packet delivery cost under various network topologies, cell types and multicast users' distributions. Furthermore, for the evaluation of the scheme, we consider different transport channels for the transmission of the data the UTRAN interfaces.

Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (MBMS), introduced in Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 6, is a point-to-multipoint downlink bearer service that addresses the need for the efficient usage of the expensive radio resources. Power control is one of the most important aspects in MBMS due to the fact that Node B's transmission power is a limited resource and must be shared among all MBMS users in a cell. Consequently, the analysis of transmitted power plays a fundamental role in the planning and optimization process of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) radio access networks. This paper investigates several factors affecting Node B's transmission power levels such as, cell deployment, propagation models, Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, users' distributions and mobility issues. Finally different transport channels for the transmission of the multicast data over the UTRAN interfaces are considered.
We address the issue of measuring storage, or query load distribution fairness in peer-to-peer data management systems. Existing metrics may look promising from the point of view of specific peers, while in reality be...

As mobile devices are becoming increasingly powerful and ubiquitous, new possibilities to get route guidance are created, allowing users to save valuable time and effort. However, mobile devices still face severe constraints that limit the possibilities that a mobile route finding application may offer. In this paper, we present a device independent mobile application that enables mobile users to receive route directions to their handheld device. This application is an extension to an existing mobile map delivery system, the m-CHARTIS system. We focus on the main features and we analyse the device independent character of the application. Implementation details are presented and finally directions for future work are proposed.
We propose and evaluate a new burst assembly algorithm based on the average delay of the packets comprising a burst. This method fixes the average delay of the packets belonging to an assembled burst to a desired valu...

This paper proposes a power control scheme for the efficient radio bearer selection in the Multimedia, Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) framework of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). The choice of the most efficient transport channel in terms of power consumption is a key point for the MBMS since a wrong transport channel selection for the transmission of the MBMS data could result to a significant decrease in the total capacity of the system. Different UMTS transport channels are examined and an algorithm that defines the switching point between dedicated and common radio bearers is proposed The proposed MBMS power control scheme selects the transport channel that reduces the Node B's transmission power in every cell of the network with multicast users.

With the rapid progress of mobile devices and positioning technologies, Trajectory Databases (TD) have been in the core of database research during the last decade. Analysis and knowledge discovery in TD is an emerging field which has recently gained great interest. Extracting knowledge from TD using certain types of mining techniques, such as clustering and classification, impose that there is a mean to quantify the distance between two trajectories. Having as a main objective the support of effective similarity query processing, existing approaches utilize generic distance metrics that ignore the peculiarities of the trajectories as complex spatiotemporal data types. In this paper, we define a novel set of trajectory distance operators based on primitive (space and time) as well as derived parameters of trajectories (speed and direction). Aiming at providing a powerful toolkit for analysts who require producing distance matrices with different semantics as input to mining tasks, we develop algorithms for each of the proposed operators. The efficiency of our approach is evaluated through an experimental study on classification and clustering tasks using synthetic and real trajectory datasets.

In this work we present the basic concepts in the architecture of a peer-to-peer environment for monitoring multiple wireless sensor networks, called ShareSense. ShareSense, which is currently under development, uses JXTA as a peer-to-peer substrate. We demonstrate its basic functionalities using a simple application scenario, which utilizes multiple disparate wireless sensor networks. This application scenario involves monitoring of such networks using a separate management environment and a custom application GUI, as well as using Google Earth as an additional user interface.
