In this paper we introduce a new test-data compression method for IP cores with unknown structure. The proposed method encodes the test data provided by the core vendor using a new, very effective compression scheme based on multilevel Huffman coding. Specifically, three different kinds of information are compressed using the same Huffman code, and thus significant test data reductions are achieved. A simple architecture is proposed for decoding on-chip the compressed data. Its hardware overhead is very low and comparable to that of the most efficient methods in the literature. Additionally, the proposed technique offers increased probability of detection of unmodeled faults since the majority of the unknown values of the test set are replaced by pseudorandom data generated by an LFSR.

We consider a security problem on a distributed network. We assume a network whose nodes are vulnerable to infection by threats (e.g. viruses), the attackers. A system security software, the defender, is available in the system. However, due to the network’s size, economic and performance reasons, it is capable to provide safety, i.e. clean nodes from the possible presence of attackers, only to a limited part of it. The objective of the defender is to place itself in such a way as to maximize the number of attackers caught, while each attacker aims not to be caught. In [7], a basic case of this problem was modeled as a non-cooperative game, called the Edge model. There, the defender could protect a single link of the network. Here, we consider a more general case of the problem where the defender is able to scan and protect a set of k links of the network, which we call the Tuple model. It is natural to expect that this increased power of the defender should result in a better quality of protection for the network. Ideally, this would be achieved at little expense on the existence and complexity of Nash equilibria (profiles where no entity can improve its local objective unilaterally by switching placements on the network). In this paper we study pure and mixed Nash equilibria in the model. In particular, we propose algorithms for computing such equilibria in polynomial time and we provide a polynomial-time transformation of a special class of Nash equilibria, called matching equilibria, between the Edge model and the Tuple model, and vice versa. Finally, we establish that the increased power of the defender results in higher-quality protection of the network.

The study of the path coloring problem is motivated by the allocation of optical bandwidth to communication requests in all-optical networks that utilize Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). WDM technology establishes communication between pairs of network nodes by establishing transmitter-receiver paths and assigning wavelengths to each path so that no two paths going through the same fiber link use the same wavelength. Optical bandwidth is the number of distinct wavelengths. Since state-of-the-art technology allows for a limited number of wavelengths, the engineering problem to be solved is to establish communication minimizing the total number of wavelengths used. This is known as the wavelength routing problem. In the case where the underlying network is a tree, it is equivalent to the path coloring problem. We survey recent advances on the path coloring problem in both undirected and bidirected trees. We present hardness results and lower bounds for the general problem covering also the special case of sets of symmetric paths (corresponding to the important case of symmetric communication). We give an overview of the main ideas of deterministic greedy algorithms and point out their limitations. For bidirected trees, we present recent results about the use of randomization for path coloring and outline approximation algorithms that find path colorings by exploiting fractional path colorings. Also, we discuss upper and lower bounds on the performance of on-line algorithms. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

The main objective of the paper is to introduce how the concept of tensor HOSVD can be carried over to the TP (Tensor Product) dynamic models, namely, how we can define and generate the "HOSVD like" decomposition of Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) dynamic models. We term this decomposition as HOSVD based canonical form of TP model or polytopic model form. The key idea and the basic concept of this decomposition was proposed recently with the TP model transformation based control design methodology. The novelty of this paper is to present the mathematical background of this concept. The paper shows convergency theorems how the TP model transformation is capable of reconstructing this HOSVD based canonical form numerically. The proofs of the theorems are lengthly, therefore they are omitted. The paper also presents numerical examples to show the applicability, efficiency and uniformity of the numerical reconstruction. © 2006 IEEE.

To create an understanding of enterprises and the ways they do business, a starting point could be to identify the main actors and the values transferred between them. Business models are created in order to make clear who the business actors are in a business case and to make their relations explicit. The relations are formulated in terms of values exchanged between the actors. The purpose of the work reported in this paper is to create a better understanding of business models by identifying basic notions used in such models. It does so by constructing a common ontology based on three established business model ontologies: e3-value, REA, and BMO. By means of a careful analysis of these ontologies a conceptual schema is created that defines the common concepts. An example is worked out that explains how the common ontology should be understood.

A system for visualizing binary component-based program structure with component functional size

Component-based software development is a development approach which aims to reduce development costs and increase software reliability. With component-based development, often new program is created quickly by reusing components in binary form that have been developed by third parties, without access to the source code of those components. In order to maintain such program on an on-going basis, it is important to be able to visualize the overall structure and behavior of the program. However, because existing program visualization systems need to analyze the program source code, it has been difficult to apply them to program that incorporates components in binary form. In this paper, we propose a program visualization system which does not make use of the source code, but uses two techniques, reflection and byte-code analysis, to measure the functional size of each component and to determine the dependency relationships among components and helper classes. These results are used to provide an accurate visualization of the overall structure of the component-based program. Our system can be applied to programs built with JavaBeans components. As a result of comparative evaluations, it is found that our system is useful for visualizing binary component-based program structure with component functional size to support maintenance activities.

Ferroelectric materials have been gaining much interest over the last decades due to the unique operational characteristics they demonstrate, when a dc electric field is applied. This paper investigates the scattering analysis of electromagnetic waves from materials with high permittivity that follows a linear spatial variation along one axis. The Surface Integral Equation (SIE) and Volume Integral Equation (VIE) methods are invoked to compute the currents and the radar cross section (RCS). The number of unknowns for the VIE is, as expected, larger than for the SIE method. The RCS and the induced current are associated in such a way that one can approximate the linear variation with relatively few elements (unknowns).

In this paper we give an overview of the four TRECVID tasks submitted by COST292, European network of institutions in the area of semantic multimodal analysis and retrieval of digital video media. Initially, we present shot boundary evaluation method based on results merged using a confidence measure. The two SB detectors user here are presented, one of the Technical University of Delft and one of the LaBRI, University of Bordeaux 1, followed by the description of the merging algorithm. The high-level feature extraction task comprises three separate systems. The first system, developed by the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) utilises a set of MPEG-7 low-level descriptors and Latent Semantic Analysis to detect the features. The second system, developed by Bilkent University, uses a Bayesian classifier trained with a "bag of subregions" for each keyframe. The third system by the Middle East Technical University (METU) exploits textual information in the video using character recognition methodology. The system submitted to the search task is an interactive retrieval application developed by Queen Mary, University of London, University of Zilina and ITI from Thessaloniki, combining basic retrieval functionalities in various modalities (i.e. visual, audio, textual) with a user interface supporting the submission of queries using any combination of the available retrieval tools and the accumulation of relevant retrieval results over all queries submitted by a single user during a specified time interval. Finally, the rushes task submission comprises a video summarisation and browsing system specifically designed to intuitively and efficiently presents rushes material in video production environment. This system is a result of joint work of University of Bristol, Technical University of Delft and LaBRI, University of Bordeaux 1.

Practical experience is an important component of the educational process. However, the time and economical resources often required for the setting up and construction of scientific laboratories is outside the scope of many institutions. A solution to this problem could be found in the adaptation of the Virtual Reality technology, which could allow the creation of Virtual Laboratories, which will simulate the processes and actions that could take place in real laboratories. In particular, this paper, based on the expertise and motivation gained by the VirRAD-IST project, proposes and describes such an educational virtual laboratory, which aims to meet the requirements of a teal laboratory and furthermore to support communication and collaboration services. We propose a web-based system, which allows users to perform experiments on educational fields, such as Physics or Chemistry in 3D multi-user worlds where users are represented by avatars and they are offered a wide range of communication and collaboration services in. order to simulate efficiently a real learning experimental process.
