Recommendation systems are special personalization tools that help users to find interesting information and services in complex online shops. Even though today's e-commerce environments have drastically evolved and now incorporate techniques from other domains and application areas such as Web mining, semantics, artificial intelligence, user modeling and profiling, etc. setting up a successful recommendation system is not a trivial or straightforward task. This paper argues that by monitoring, analyzing and understanding the behavior of customers, their demographics, opinions, preferences and history, as well as taking into consideration the specific e-shop ontology and by applying Web mining techniques, the effectiveness of produced recommendations can be significantly improved. A novel technique for reducing the test sequences of reseeding-based schemes is presented in this paper. The proposed technique is generic and can be applied to test set embedding or mixed-mode schemes based on various TPG. The imposed hardware overhead is very small since it is confined to just one extra bit per seed plus one very small counter in the scheme's control logic, while the test-sequence-length reductions achieved are up to 44.71%. Along with the test-sequence-reduction technique, an efficient seed-selection algorithm for the test-per-clock, LFSR-based, test set embedding case is presented. The proposed algorithm targets the minimization of the selected seed volumes and, combined with the test-sequence-reduction technique, delivers results with fewer seeds and much smaller test sequences than the already proposed approaches.

A program search system is indispensable for software reuse. However, conventional search techniques are inappropriate for prompt reuse of programs because these techniques target a program source code as a retrieval unit. In this paper, we propose a new component-extraction-based program search system. Our system analyzes a collection of object-oriented (OO) programs, and extracts reusable software components composed of interdependent OO classes. Using our system, the extracted components can be searched by keywords, and the result set can be viewed by a web browser such that the user can decide whether the query result component matches his/her requirements. As a result of evaluation experiments, it is found that our system can extract many reusable components, and support the user to search extracted components effectively.

The reuse of software components is a key to realize the component-based development. When application programmers want to reuse software components provided by third parties on the Internet, static specification documents attached to components are insufficient as information regarding the behavioral features of components. In this paper, we propose a new system that enables the trial execution of components over the Internet from a remote site. Our system instantiates components on the server, and provides the web browser with readable property values and graphical user interface images of components whenever methods of components are invoked by input argument values. As a result of comparative evaluation, it is found that the usefulness of our system is greater than those of conventional techniques.

In this paper, we first present and compare existing categorization schemes for neuro-symbolic approaches. We then stress the point that not all hybrid neuro-symbolic approaches can be accommodated by existing categories. Such a case is rule-based neuro-symbolic approaches that propose a unified knowledge representation scheme suitable for use in expert systems. That kind of integrated schemes have the two component approaches tightly and indistinguishably integrated, offer an interactive inference engine and can provide explanations. Therefore, we introduce a new category of neuro-symbolic integrations, namely ‘representational integrations’. Furthermore, two sub-categories of representational integrations are distinguished, based on which of the two component approaches of the integrations is given pre-eminence. Representative approaches as well as advantages and disadvantages of both sub-categories are discussed.

Classifying images into a set of semantic categories that are meaningful to humans has proved to be a challenging and attractive problem in the field of content-based retrieval. Addressing this problem is typically based on the initial extraction of low-level features for the images and the subsequent application of a pattern recognition technique, to divide the feature space in a number of subspaces corresponding to the semantic categories. An extension to this framework is presented in this paper, aiming at the improvement of the efficiency of image classification systems. This is based on the introduction of an unsupervised still image segmentation algorithm to the process and its combination with MPEG-7 low-level descriptors and a Bayes classifier. Experimental results using different pairs of classes and corresponding data sets demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.

The implementation of successful assured forwarding (AF) services according to the DiffServ framework remains a challenging problem today, despite the numerous proposals for AF PHB mechanisms and AF-based service implementations. In this work, we propose two modules, the TCP-window aware marker (TWAM) and the dynamic WRED (DWRED) mechanism for implementing the DiffServ AF PHB. We provide analytical models and an experimental evaluation in order to demonstrate how they succeed in enhancing the quality, increasing fairness, improving the performance and easing the deployment of a production- level AF-based service.
