This paper presents the work that is taking place in the Region of Western Greece in order to develop state-of-the-art broadband infrastructure. The current status of broadband infrastructure in the region is being analyzed and the main principles on which the deployment of the networks will be based on is being described, by presenting the metropolitan area networks and the wireless access networks that will be developed. Two case studies of such municipal networks are also presented in this paper

MAX-MIN FAIR FLOW CONTROL SENSITIVE TO PRIORITIES

Flow control is the dominant technique currently used in communication networks for preventing excess traffic from flooding the network, and for handling congestion. In rate-based flow control, transmission rates of sessions are adjusted in an end-to-end manner through a sequence of operations . In this work, we present a theory of max-min fair , rate-based flow control sensitive to priorities of different sessions, as a significant extension of the classical theory of max-min fair, rate-based flow control to networks supporting applications with diverse requirements on network resources. Each individual session bears a priority function , which maps the session's priority to a transmission rate; the priority is a working abstraction of the session's priority to bandwidth access. Priority functions enable the specification of requirements on bandwidth access by distributed applications, and the formal handling of such requirements. We present priority max-min fairness , as a novel and well motivated fairness condition which requires that assigned rates correspond, through the priority functions, to priorities comprising a max-min vector. We also introduce priority bottleneck algorithms gradually update a session's rate until when its priority is restricted on a priority bottleneck edge of the network. We establish a collection of interesting combinatorial properties of priority bottleneck algorithms. Most significantly, we show that they can only converge to priority max-min fairness. As an application of our general theory, we embed priority bottleneck algorithms in the more realistic optimistic framework for rate-based flow control. The optimistic framework allows for both decreases and increases of session rates. We exploit these additionally provided semantics to prove further combinatorial properties for the termination of priority bottleneck algorithms in the optimistic framework. High bit rate wireless cellular service using CDMA 1X-EVDO is now popular in Korea, particularly in urban areas, since it was launched commercially in 2002. This cellular service allows the real-time transmission of patient images and vital sign signals simultaneously in a moving ambulance application. In this paper, we designed a prototype emergency telemedicine system that can transfer both biological signal and patient motion video from a moving vehicle using a CDMA 1X-EVDO reverse link. To cope with the limited bandwidth of the reverse link (transmission bandwidth of cellular device) relative to the the forward link (receiving bandwidth), priority control between the vital sign and video images, frame rate control using MPEG-4 compression, and error control using automatic repeat request were incorporated into the application layer protocol of the designed prototype system. Many on-road experiments have been performed to evaluate the actual performance and to demonstrate the applicability in a real situation. In most cases, the biological signal and patient video images with reduced frame rate were successfully transmitted from the moving vehicle in urban areas © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Classifying images into a set of semantic categories that are meaningful to humans has proved to be a challenging and attractive problem in the field of content-based retrieval. Addressing this problem is typically based on the initial extraction of low-level features for the images and the subsequent application of a pattern recognition technique, to divide the feature space in a number of subspaces corresponding to the semantic categories. An extension to this framework is presented in this paper, aiming at the improvement of the efficiency of image classification systems. This is based on the introduction of an unsupervised still image segmentation algorithm to the process and its combination with MPEG-7 low-level descriptors and a Bayes classifier. Experimental results using different pairs of classes and corresponding data sets demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.

dIn this paper, we present the design and implementation of a VRML97 multi-user layer, which is introduced in the EVE distributed virtual reality platform. Though other approaches use a VRML node insertion mechanism, Such as VSPLUS, or a substitution mechanism, Such as SPIN-3D, our approach uses a removal mechanism. Main consideration of our multi-user extension is the ease of transforming single-user virtual worlds into multi-user virtual worlds, as well as the conformity with any standard VRML97 browser. Furthermore, we present the EVE' s communication platform, which can be used in order to support Collaborative Virtual Environments. Main issues regarding the effective network communication as well as the initialization of the 3D scene are discussed in this paper. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Data mining provides the opportunity to extract useful information from large databases. Various techniques have been proposed in this context in order to extract this information in the most efficient way. However, efficiency is not our only concern in this study. The security and privacy issues over the extracted knowledge must be seriously considered as well. By taking this into consideration, we study the procedure of hiding sensitive association rules in binary data sets by blocking some data values and we present an algorithm for solving this problem. We also provide a fuzzification of the support and the confidence of an association rule in order to accommodate for the existence of blocked/unknown values. In addition, we quantitatively compare the proposed algorithm with other already published algorithms by running experiments on binary data sets, and we also qualitatively compare the efficiency of the proposed algorithm in hiding association rules. We utilize the notion of border rules, by putting weights in each rule, and we use effective data structures for the representation of the rules so as (a) to minimize the side effects created by the hiding process and (b) to speed up the selection of the victim transactions. Approximate path coloring with applications to wavelength assignment in WDM optical networks

Motivated by the wavelength assignment problem in WDM optical networks, we study path coloring problems in graphs. Given a set of paths P on a graph G, the path coloring problem is to color the paths of P so that no two paths traversing the same edge of G are assigned the same color and the total number of colors used is minimized. The problem has been proved to be NP-hard even for trees and rings. Using optimal solutions to fractional path coloring, a natural relaxation of path coloring, on which we apply a randomized rounding technique combined with existing coloring algorithms, we obtain new upper bounds on the minimum number of colors sufficient to color any set of paths on any graph. The upper bounds are either existential or constructive. The existential upper bounds significantly improve existing ones provided that the cost of the optimal fractional path coloring is sufficiently large and the dilation of the set of paths is small. Our algorithmic results include improved approximation algorithms for path coloring in rings and in bidirected trees. Our results extend to variations of the original path coloring problem arizing in multifiber WDM optical networks. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper we challenge the question of whether there is value in having multiple layers of semantic information associated with corpus semantic annotation. In this context we introduce a semantic annotation experiment in which novice annotators were asked to assign sense tags to a set of polysemous corpus nouns, using Wordnet as their referential sense repository. Wordnet is a rich sense inventory that provides explicit information of the semantic types associated with every word sense. To measure the effect semantic types' knowledge has on the sense assignment process, we carried out two annotation sessions. In the first session, annotators relied exclusively on Wordnet synsets to annotate corpus nouns, whereas in the second session the same pool of annotators examined Wordnet synsets in conjunction with their semantic types, prior assigning a sense tag. Comparing annotators' performance in both sessions shows that when consulting semantic types, annotators assigned more salient senses to highly polysemous nouns, whereas for the same set of terms, when relying exclusively on Wordnet synsets, annotators tended to assign narrower senses, which whatsoever were more error-prone. Results indicate that semantic types have a potential in dealing with subtle sense distinctions in the course of corpus annotation.

In this paper, we present the design, implementation and evaluation of FESMI, a fuzzy expert system that deals with diagnosis and treatment of male impotence. The diagnosis process, linguistic variables and their values were modeled based on expert’s knowledge the statistical analysis of the records of 70 patients from a hospital database and existing literature. The expert system has been implemented in FuzzyCLIPS. The fuzzy rules are organized in groups to be able to simulate the diagnosis process. Experimental results showed that FESMI did quite better than non-expert urologists and about 79% as well as the expert did. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
