A new analytical model for Single Electron Transistors (SETs) that can be used for co-simulation with CMOS is developed and validated with Monte Carlo simulation. The model includes temperature dependence, device asymmetry and background charge effects. A detailed physical parameter extraction procedure for asymmetric SETs is reported. An analytical approach is subsequently developed to investigate and accurately predict the power dissipation of SET inverters. Static power, as main mechanism of SET logic power dissipation, and contributions of dynamic and temperature-dependent leakage power are derived and critically discussed. It is shown that SET asymmetry can be exploited to significantly reduce SET logic power dissipation with negligible impact on propagation delay.

Recently list mode (event-by-event) data acquisition with Positron Emission Tomography (PET) has been widely noticed because the list mode acquisition is superior to the conventional frame mode data acquisition in terms of (1) higher efficiency of data storage, (2) higher temporal resolution and (3) higher flexibility of data manipulation. The aim of this study is to investigate the performance of list mode data acquisition with ECAT HR and HR+ PET scanners(CTI PET Systems). The cylindrical phantom (16 cm diameter and 16 cm long) filled with 11C solution for HR and 15O solution for HR+ was scanned several times varying the radioactivity with list mode and frame mode acquisitions. The scans with the septa (2D mode) and without the septa (3D mode) were also carried out in order to evaluate the effect of interplane septa on quality of the list mode data. The acquired list mode data were sorted to sinogram and reconstructed using filtered back-projection algorithm. The count rate performance of the list mode data was comparable to the frame mode data. However list mode acquisition could not be performed if radioactivity in the field-of-view was high (more than 3 mCi for 3D mode) due to lack of transfer speed for sending data from memory to hard disk.10 replicated data set from one list mode data were generated to estimate the noise in the reconstructed image. The reconstructed images with 3D mode has more than 60 % better signal-to-noise ratio compared to the image with 2D mode. Generated file size of list mode was also evaluated. In the case of HR+ with 3D list mode, list mode data with 2.31 MBytes/s for 1mCi injection were generated. Out results suggest that careful attention must be paid for protocol of the list mode data acquisition in order to obtain the highest performance of the PET scanner.

A new technique for manufacturing microelectrode arrays is described and assessed. This technique uses wire Electrical Discharge Machining (wire EDM) to form detailed array structures from a single sample of solid metal. Chemical etching can then be used to increase the electrode aspect ratios. Electrode lengths of 5 mm, widths of 40 μm, and spacings of 250 μm have been fabricated using this technique. Arrays of electrodes of varying lengths can also be fabricated. For intracortical recording applications, the signal paths are isolated from one another by securing an insulating substrate.

This paper describes a method of test data compression for a given test set using statistical encoding. In order to maximize the effectiveness of statistical encoding, the method first converts some specified input values in the test set to unspecified ones without losing fault coverage, and then reassigns appropriate logic values to the unspecified inputs. Experimental results for ISCAS-89 benchmark circuits show that the proposed method can on the average reduce the test data volume to less than 25% of that required for the original test set.

In this study, we propose a new competitive learning method for temporal signals using pulsed neuron model. The pulsed neuron models deal with pulse trains as the inputs and outputs, and employ leaky integrators as there internal potentials. Therefore, the models can deal with temporal signals without the windowing process. The proposed method is based on a winner selection method controlling the firing threshold of competitive neurons using a few observer neurons. By employing this method, the winner neuron switches dynamically according to variation of input signals. As a result of the experiment, it become clear that the temporal input signals generated from a real sound could be quantized and the reference vector changes according to variation of input signals.
