This paper discusses the development of software engineering class projects that have produced tools which have been used to enrich the educational experience of engineering students, the end users of the software. The projects have involved the creation, maintenance and evolution of software that helps the students determine their major, understand their learning style, develop a semester-by-semester plan of study, and formulate a class schedule each semester. The evolution of the structure of the software engineering project process is first presented. Having "internal" clients (i.e. those who are employees of the university) for projects that directly benefit engineering students is then compared to having "external" clients. The benefits gained by all stakeholders through these projects and data supporting the satisfaction levels of those stakeholders is presented. Finally, there is a discussion of funded research projects that have been spun off from of these projects, and the plans for the further educational software development through these grants.

A new method to recognize continuous sign language based on hidden Markov model is proposed. According to the dependence of linguistic context, connections between elementary subwords are classified as strong connection and weak connection. The recognition of strong connection is accomplished with the aid of subword trees, which describe the connection of subwords in each sign language word. In weak connection, the main problem is how to extract the best matched subwords and find their end-points with little help of context information. The proposed method improves the summing process of the Viterbi decoding algorithm which is constrained in every individual model, and compares the end score at each frame to find the ending frame of a subword. Experimental results show an accuracy of 70% for continuous sign sentences that comprise no more than 4 subwords.

Ad hoc wireless networks are self-organizing, dynamic topology networks formed by a collection of mobile nodes through radio links. Minimal configuration, absence of infrastructure and quick deployment make them convenient for emergency situations apart from military applications. Multicasting plays a crucial role in the application of ad hoc networks. Since bandwidth is limited in ad hoc wireless networks, a multicast routing protocol must be efficient. It is well known that tree based multicast routing protocols are efficient. But, the main drawback of these protocols is that they are not robust enough to achieve high packet delivery ratios. We propose a tree based multicast protocol in which, to make the protocol robust as well as efficient, a node joins the multicast tree by taking into consideration not only the number of forwarding nodes but also the distance between the source and receiver. For tree maintenance, we have used a localized prediction scheme which results in a high packet delivery ratio.

We propose a new multiple description method for wavelet transform coded images. The partitioning of the coefficients at the encoder is combined with concealment at the decoder to produce descriptions. An optimal concealment method for wavelet coefficients is derived based on statistical characteristics. Concealment in the LL subband is treated differently and is based on its smoothness property. We have designed a coder for wireless image transmission which emphasizes the need for source and channel coding interaction based on residual redundancy. Optimal channel rate allocation is derived depending upon source significance and channel state information. Simulations for wireless transmission have shown promising results.

This paper exploits the signal algebraic structure on the uplink of OFDMA system adopting interleaved carrier assignment scheme for synchronization and user separation. We first propose a subspace based method to estimate multiple user CFO deterministically using only one OFDMA block. Next, we derive a MMSE filter which can extract the ideal received signal waveform of all users individually to implement user separation and frequency synchronization at the same time. In this paper we present a new approach for clustering data. The clustering metric used is the normalized cross-correlation, also known as similarity, inst.ad of the traditionally used Euclidean distance. The main advantage of this metric is that it depends on the signal shape rather than its amplitude. Under an assumption of an exponential probability model that has several desirable properties, the expectation-maximization (EM) framework is used to derive two iterative clustering algorithms. Numerical experiments are presented using simulated data in a dynamic positron emission topography study of the brain. Initial results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better performance than several existing clustering methods.

Currently, there is no standard approach for evaluating the intracranial encephalographic signals for seizure prediction. This study evaluates the IEEG signals by applying a systematic approach to feature selection, classification and validation to predict seizures. After preprocessing and processing, a genetic algorithm selects reasonable features off-line from a preselected group of features to serve as inputs to the classifier based feature selection process. A probabilistic neural network is used to select the optimal feature vector using a reed forward sequential approach on the training data followed by classification. A study of four patients resulted in a 62.5% average probability of prediction and a block false positive rate of 0.2775 false positive predictions per hour.

The electron delay time associated with the electron propagation across the FET gate barrier layer under high positive gate bias is expected to induce a dynamic negative differential conductance and enhance the growth of plasma waves in the channel. This dynamic negative conductance is related to the phase shift between the current and voltage waveforms caused by the electron time delay during the electron tunneling through the gate barrier. We present experimental investigations of the plasma wave detector responsivity at 200 GHz and 600 GHz radiation for long channel AlGaAs/GaAs and AlGaInN/GaN based HEMTs at 8 K and 300 K. The appearance of detector response correlated with an increase of the injected gate current under the forward gate bias is reported for both types of the investigated devices. Our results confirm that a large gate current can enhance the excitation of plasma waves.

We report on the fundamental properties of GaAsN compounds and GaAs/GaAsN/In GaAs heterostructures grown by MBE. The strain-induced splitting of light-hole and heavy-hole bands of tensile strained GaAsN is observed. The space-indirect transition between hole localized in InGaAs and electron localized in GaAsN is detected. The evaluation of the dependence of band gap energy for GaAsN on nitrogen content and band-edge line-up in heterostuctures with GaAsN layer was done from experimental data.
