This paper proposes an earthenware reconstruction system, which can automatically reconstruct some earthenware from numerous given potsherds in two-dimensional grayscale images. The system supposes that given potsherds are thin and moderately flat and small. Some earthenware having three-dimensional shape, such as crocks, can be reconstructed by the system within the supposition. The system performs earthenware reconstruction through two phases. At the first phase, potsherds are joined automatically in two dimensions. An efficient joint detection algorithm using surface pattern and shape similarity is proposed at this phase. At the second phase, three-dimensional shape is recovered by an adequate three-dimensional transformation. Some experimental results of reconstruction from numerous potsherds are also reported.

The problem of adaptive state feedback exponentially practically stabilizing a class of composite system with uncertainty and disturbance is considered. The uncertainties of the system can be non linear or time-varying. The bounds of the uncertainties exist, but are unknown. A designing scheme of exponentially stable adaptive controller of the system, which can guarantee the state of the system to reach the prescribed equilibrium point's nearby region in limited time, is given. Finally, the simulations performed show the validity of the new result derived.

Digital libraries and their user communities are increasingly internat ional in nature. However - though technological progress and global education have brought American and European communities closer - cross-cultural and other crosscutting issues impede the formation of &lquo;world community&rquo; on larger scales. The pertinent issues include: collaboration in the presence of language and cultural barriers, international copyrights, international revenue streams, and universal access. This panel will examine notions of "community" from a variety of theoretical and practical perspectives, and discuss lessons that can be gleaned from applications of the community concept. Topics are expected to include scalability, sustainability, regenerative cycles in healthy communities, and examples of digital-library efforts that have international potential or implications.

A class of generalized interconnected systems, possessing similar linear structure and non linear unmatched interconnections, is studied in this paper. Hence a new topic of similarity systems research is presented. Dynamic compensators are designed so that the closed-loop systems of the original systems and the compensators are asymptotically stable and have no impulse effect. Compensators also possess similar structures and are realized easily, so that a destroyed compensator is easily reproduced.

This paper proposes a family of DC/DC converters, which employs an innovative interleaving concept by using series-primary windings and interleaved parallel-secondary sides. The advantages of these converters include reduced filter sizes, improved transient response and increased efficiency. The problem of networking supervision and traffic rate control in multi-service network systems is studied by using concepts of Nash equilibrium and Stackelberg strategy under assumption of two-level system architecture. Models of users, network provider and overall system in game-theoretic setting are presented. Linear Stackelberg incentive strategies are derived for both elastic and non-elastic traffic, and verified using Kelly's example. Outlines of the two-level integrated control and supervision architecture, and of the proposed fuzzy-Perti-net supervisor are given.

We address the problem of allocating optical bandwidth to a set of communication requests in a tree-shaped all-optical network that utilizes Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology. WDM technology establishes communication between pairs of nodes of the network by establishing tranceiver-receiver paths and assigning wavelengths to each path so that no two paths going through the same link use the same wavelength. Optical bandwidth is the number of distinct wavelengths. The important engineering problem to be solved is to establish communication between pairs of nodes so that the total number of wavelengths used is minimized. In this paper, we focus on a special case of the problem considering patterns of requests that are symmetric, i.e. for any transmitter-receiver pair of nodes (v1, v2) there also exists its symmetric (v2, v1). Our motivation lies in the fact that many services that are expected to be supported by high performance optical networks in the future, require bidirectional reservation of bandwidth. We prove that the problem of optimizing the number of wavelengths used is NP-hard even when the underlying network is a binary tree. We also present two interesting lower bounds.
