We study the problem of representing images within a multimedia Database Management System (DBMS), in order to support fast retrieval operations without compromising storage efficiency. To achieve this goal, we propose new image coding techniques which combine a wavelet representation, embedded coding of the wavelet coefficients, and segmentation of image-domain regions in the wavelet domain. A bitstream is generated in which each image region is encoded independently of other regions, without having to explicitly store information describing the regions. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms achieve coding performance which compares favorably, both perceptually and objectively, to that achieved using state-of-the-art image/video coding techniques while additionally providing region-based support.

The spectral response, luminance, and outgassing characteristics of new, thin-film Ce-activated SrGa₂S₄ phosphors for application in field-emission flat-panel displays are presented. The tested phosphor materials are prepared using molecular beam epitaxy. The sample screens are tested with e-beam excitation at currents up to 50 μA within the 200-2000 V (i.e., "low-voltage") and 3-8 kV (i.e., "medium-voltage") ranges. The spectral coordinates are compared to those of commercial low-voltage phosphors. Phosphor outgassing, as a function of time, is measured with a residual gas analyzer at a fixed 50-μA beam current in the low-voltage range. We find that levels of outgassing stabilize to low values within the first hour of excitation. The desorption rates measured from thin films are compared to previously studied desorption parameters for powder phosphor layers.

In this paper, we propose an objective picture quality scale (PQSvideo) for video coding based on the MC + DCT coding algorithm. We employ average and maximum of several essential distortion factors such as Flicker, Jerky movement, Deformation of moving object and Mosquito noise, which are calculated from each frame of video sequence. For constructing PQSvideo, a principal component analysis is carried out to eliminate the correlation between distortion factors. Then, by assuming the linear combination model between principal components and Mean Opinion Score (MOS), the combination coefficients can estimate by a multiple regression analysis. PQSvideo closely approximates the MOS, with a correlation coefficient of more than 0.98 and a maximum absolute error is less than 0.43.

We propose a new multi-attribute index. Our approach combines the hB-tree, a multi-attribute index, and the Π-tree, an abstract index which offers efficient concurrency and recovery methods. We call the resulting method the hB^Π-tree. We describe several versions of the hB^Π-tree, each using a different node-splitting and index-term-posting algorithm. We also describe a new node deletion algorithm. We have implemented all the versions of the hB^Π-tree. Our performance results show that even the version that offers no performance guarantees, actually performs very well in terms of storage utilization, index size (fan-out), exact-match and range searching, under various data types and distributions. We have also shown that our index is fairly insensitive to increases in dimension. Thus, it is suitable for indexing high-dimensional applications. This property and the fact that all our versions of the hB^Π-tree can use the Π-tree concurrency and recovery algorithms make the hB^Π-tree a promising candidate for inclusion in a general-purpose DBMS.

Proposes a powerful model, called MITOS (Model for Intelligent Three-dimensional Object Support) for the intelligent support of spatial data consisting of irregular 3D objects and their interrelations. The core novelty of the proposed data model lies in its delicate way of representing the (complicated) world of 3D objects in order to reduce its complexity. MITOS achieves this by discretizing the space, using mostly topological notions and finite sets, and by recalling geometry only when needed. On the other hand, MITOS's objects are effectively handled by the MITOS language, which is an integration of an object-oriented programming language and a logic-based one.

This paper presents a novel method for designing TSC m-out-of-n code checkers taking into account a realistic fault model including stuck-at, transistor stuck-on, transistor stuck-open, resistive bridging faults and breaks. The proposed design method is the first method in the open literature that takes into account a realistic fault model and can be applied for all practical values of m and n. Apart from the above the proposed checkers are very compact and very fast. Another benefit of the proposed TSC checkers is that all faults are tested by single pattern tests thus the probability of achieving the TSC goal is greater than in checkers requiring two-pattern tests.

The most important goal in hard real-time systems is to guarantee that all timing constraints are satisfied. Even though object-based techniques (which contain reusable software components) are used to manage the complexity in the software development process of such systems, execution efficiency may have to be sacrificed, due to the large number of procedure calls and contention for accessing software components. These issues are addressed by the following parallelizing techniques: converting potentially inefficient procedure calls to a source of concurrency via asynchronous remote procedure calls (ARPC); and replicating (or cloning) software components to reduce the contention. The existing object-based scheduling algorithms construct an initial schedule and apply incremental parallelization techniques to modify the initial schedule until a feasible schedule is generated. These algorithms are applicable for scheduling only multiple independent tasks. This paper describes a pre-run-time scheduling algorithm for a set of periodic object-based tasks having precedence constraints among them. The algorithm employs parallelism exploitation techniques to guarantee timeliness in almost fully predictable environments such as factory automation, aerospace, and avionics. It allocates the components of object-based periodic tasks to the sites of a distributed system based on a clustering heuristic which takes into account the ARPC parallelism and load balancing, and schedules them on respective sites.

Software testability is becoming an important factor to be considered during software development and assessment, especially for critical software. The paper gives software testability, previously defined by Voas (1991, 1992), a new model and measurement which is done before random black-box testing with respect to a particular input distribution. The authors also compared their measurement results with the one simulated according with Voas's model. It showed that their rough testability estimate provides enough information and will be used as guidelines for software development.
