Process modeling has become increasingly attractive in the software engineering community. In process modeling, the enactment of software process model is a dominant theme. In order to correctly and smoothly enact the software process model, it is necessary to detect the inconsistencies contained in the software process model early, before the software process model is inst.ntiated to actual enactment engine. SapePar-i860 is an execution driven "Simulator and Performance Evaluator for i860 based Parallel Architecture". The simulator has various inputs like the primary cache size, primary cache type, secondary cache size, secondary cache type, secondary cache replacement policy, number of processors, interconnection between the processors, communication path from each processor to other processors, type of communication and bandwidth of communication channels. The simulator gets configured automatically according to the inputs and generates log files. The performance analyzer generates statistics of the run based on these log files. The statistics includes cache hit ratio of primary cache, cache hit ratio of secondary cache, Complete Communication Ratio (CCR/sub i/) of each processor, the Compute Communication Ratio (CCR/sub 6/) of overall system, efficiency of each processor and efficiency of overall system. This also computes the speedup, execution time in terms of clock ticks.< >

This paper describes a solution to the problem of planning a leg motion for a six legged robot when smooth versatile motion commands of its body are given. The well-known wave gait for a longitudinally symmetric robot is generalized to solve the omnidirectional gait planning problem for a radially symmetric six legged robot. The algorithm can handle any combination of translational and rotational motions for a variable crab angle condition as long as the rates of speed and crab angle are moderate. Guaranteeing the maximum duty factor for any given commanded motion, this solution optimizes the stability margin of the robot. The foot trajectory planning algorithm dynamically generates a smooth foot trajectory as a function of the inst.ntaneous body motions.< >

Multivariable controller design for the regulation of blood pressure and flowrate in congestive heart failure patients is typically limited by the sample time for blood flowrate. We present a multirate model predictive control (MPC) design for the multidrug infusion problem, based on a comprehensive nonlinear model of the system. The MPC design is based on NL-QDMC, with a selective linearization method introduced to reduce computation time. External constraints on dopamine infusion specify a 'forbidden zone' in addition to upper and lower bounds. The multirate MPC design includes a novel rule-based override that is used to avoid any infusion in this region. Simulation results are used to illustrate the performance of the controller.

This paper presents a robust speed control of an induction motor (IM) using a load torque observer and a feedforward control. The speed response characteristics using a conventional PI controller are affected by variations of system parameters. In the proposed system, the speed control characteristics are not affected by a load torque disturbance and variations of motor and mechanical parameters. The whole control processing was performed by software using a digital signal processor (DSP) within a reasonable period and experimental results showed the robustness of the control system against.a disturbance torque and variations of motor and mechanical parameters.

An efficient algorithm for retrieving noise corrupted patterns from an associative memory is presented. In any stable system, an input pattern with b bits differing from the nearest pattern is shown to be asynchronously attracted to that desired pattern in at most b steps. The proposed method is not only suitable for the sparse system but also good for any associative memory. Examples are given to demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the proposed method. © 1993 IEEE.

In this paper, the solution used in the context of SEPDS (a Software Development Environment) to the problem of combining interactive behavior specification with functionality description of a distributed interactive application is presented. This solution consists of combining two specification models: IDFG to describe the interactive aspects of applications developed with the system and EDFG to describe their functionality. Both these models are data flow graph based and can be classified as process models. They use "actors" to represent performers of processes and "links" to represent data buffering and exchange, as well as roles and different perspectives. Although the two models have many semantical differences, they also have many common properties, that is why they can be straightforwardly combined in a process that enables designers think in users terms. To this end, action actors are used to represent the functions supported by the application, and context actors to represent the application user interface functions. In addition, links are used to represent the events that take place in the system (these may be user or system actions), the effects that these have on the screen, the context into which these take place and the goals that may be achieved using the application. Furthermore, the reusability and prototyping tools of SEPDS can be used to construct and test the application design. © 1993, Springer Verlag. All rights reserved.

This paper builds on work toward the simplification of fault diagnosis within electric distribution systems using a fuzzy expert system. Based on the symptom description derived from customers, the developed system draws on the past experience of distribution systems from historical trouble tickets to determine the membership-grade, which indicates the degree to which specific components might be faulty on a prioritized basis. Thus a priority list of suspicious components is the result, if a trouble ticket is given. To demonstrate its effectiveness, the proposed system is implemented in C++ language and applied to practical data which includes 3067 trouble tickets. It is found that the fuzzy expert system can emulate system operators and provide substantial assistance in decision-making with respect to fault diagnosis of distribution systems. © 1993 IEEE.

One missing link between CAD and CAM is the lack of a systematic methodology for generating and evaluating alternative ways to manufacture a proposed design. To address this problem, we are developing a systematic approach for generating and evaluating alternative ways to manufacture machined parts, in order to provide information to the designer about the manufacturability of the proposed design, and information to the process engineer about how best to machine the part.
