It is demonstrated that the LQR/LTR (linear quadratic Gaussian/loop transfer recovery) technique can be viewed as a way to achieve robustness even under the constraint of a reduced-order controller, even though one is not necessarily recovering a desired transfer function asymptotically. The optimal projection equation (OPE) approach gives an expanded view of LQG/LTR technique when the order of the controller is intentionally less than the order of the system design model. Also, the OPE approach allows other forms for Omega , which may give more flexibility as to how the system perturbations are modeled, to be chosen.< >

A Markov random field (MRF) model-based approach to automated image interpretation is described and demonstrated as a region-based scheme. In this approach, an image is first segmented into a collection of disjoint regions which form the nodes of an adjacency graph. Image interpretation is then achieved through assigning object labels, or interpretations, to the segmented regions, or nodes, using domain knowledge, extracted feature measurements, and spatial relationships between the various regions. The interpretation labels are modeled as a MRF on the corresponding adjacency graph, and the image interpretation problem are formulated as a maximum a posteriori estimation rule. Simulated annealing is used to find the best realization, or optimal interpretation. Through the MRF model, this approach also provides a systematic method for organizing and representing domain knowledge through the clique functions of the probability density function underlying MRF. Results of image interpretation experiments performed on synthetic and real-world images using this approach are described.< >

RC snubbers must be used for limiting the overvoltages at the diode or thyristor reverse recovery transients. This is true for the application range from line frequency conversion to the output rectifiers in switched-mode DC power supplies. An insight into the mechanism of the turn-off waveforms is obtained by simulations and calculations, and the tradeoffs between overvoltages and losses are presented. An easy-to-use nomogram for the selection of the snubber components is given. A computer program dedicated for power electronic circuit analysis under development, KREAN, is used for the simulations, and is briefly described.< >

The use of a multiple-tone modulation scheme for a M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) system proves to be an efficient alternative for bandwidth constraint channels. A combinatorial design, called balanced incomplete block design, used to select the signaling format based on blocks of frequencies rather than single tones, as in a conventional MFSK system, is shown to reduce drastically the system bandwidth requirement and also to improve the performance of the system of a Rayleigh fading type of channel by adding an implicit diversity to the system. A nonbinary block code concatenated to the multi-tone MFSK system is considered, and it is shown to increase the diversity of the system, and consequently to improve its performance.< >

The authors deal with the problems of software partition for distributed real-time applications. The software-partitioning models analyzed are those that take maximizing the efficiency in resource utilization for their objective, while observing the constraints on CPU throughput, memory space available, maximally allowed task execution time, and the order of module execution. The problem of software partition based on the models is proved to be NP-complete. There is no efficient partitioning algorithm for the models. A colored Petri net (CPN) model of a cell controller capable of real-time control and monitoring of multiple workstations is described. The need to incorporate the ideas of both computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) and flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) is discussed, and the controller is based on these concepts. The CPN for the cell controller is presented and described. The controller in this case controls two workstations: the Cincinnati Milacron 5VC machining center and a robotic assembly workstation using an Adept.robot. An analysis of the net is performed, and relevant portions are presented. A data structure for implementing this type of a CPN is given. The code for the controller is divided into application-dependent and -independent code. An execution algorithm is provided. The conclusions emphasize the advantages of CPNs in modeling and analysis for discrete-event control of manufacturing systems.< >
