This paper deals with finding an n-dimensional solution x to a system of quadratic equations yi = ||2, 1 ≤ i ≤ m, which in general is known to be NP-hard. We put forth a novel procedure, that starts with a weighted maximal correlation initialization obtainable with a few power iterations, followed by successive refinements based on iteratively reweighted gradient-type iterations. The novel techniques distinguish themselves from prior works by the inclusion of a fresh (re)weighting regularization. For certain random measurement models, the proposed procedure returns the true solution x with high probability in time proportional to reading the data {(ai; yi)]1≤i≤m, provided that the number m of equations is some constant c > 0 times the number n of unknowns, that is, m ≤ cn. Empirically, the upshots of this contribution are: i) perfect signal recovery in the high-dimensional regime given only an information-theoretic limit number of equations; and, ii) (near-)optimal statistical accuracy in the presence of additive noise. Extensive numerical tests using both synthetic data and real images corroborate its improved signal recovery performance and computational efficiency relative to state-of-the-art approaches.

Multicast/Broadcast Multicast Service over Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) technology has introduced advanced broadcast capabilities to cellular systems. In Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) systems, MBSFN transmission accommodates multicast groups in search of the same data. In this paper we compare the traditional Point-to-Point (PTP) communication with the MBSFN services through simulation experiments for various femtocell distributions and network configurations. The comparison takes into account the average throughput, overhead cost, energy consumption and capacity gain, concluding that MBSFN through multicast transmission may guarantee performance improvement even for users in the cell boundaries. © 2016 ACM.

Detecting faults in the initial stage of the development process has become an important prospect for the codes cost estimation; so a fault predictor model is very much necessary in order to bring down the cost of development and maintenance. Due to these reasons, developing models for fault prediction has become a crucial part of research, and various techniques have been adapted in order to predict faults in a software. Few of them include Artificial Neural Network, Decision Tree, Genetic Algorithm, etc. Among these techniques, Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms have become a growing concern over the years and are being applied in various fields such as optimization, prediction or classification. These techniques make use of various software metrics to assess the characteristic of any software system such as number of faults, maintenance of class, etc. Most commonly used are Chidamber and Kemerer (CK) metrics which are found to be efficient from many researches.

The Euclidean minimum spanning tree (EMST) is a fundamental and widely studied structure. In the approximate version we are given an n-element point set P in Rd and an error parameter ϵ > 0, and the objective is to compute a spanning tree over P whose weight is at most (1 + ϵ) times that of the true minimum spanning tree. Assuming that d is a fixed constant, existing algorithms have running times that (up to logarithmic factors) grow as 0(n/ϵnω(d). We present an algorithm whose running time is 0(nlogn+(ϵ-2 log21/ϵ)n). Thus, this is the first algorithm for approximate EMSTs that eliminates the exponential s dependence on dimension. (Note that the O-notation conceals a constant factor of the form 0(l)d.) The well-known supernova remnant (SNR) W 44 is observed in high-energy gamma rays and widely studied to investigate cosmic ray (CR) acceleration. Several analyses of the W 44 surroundings showed the presence of gamma-ray emission offset from the radio SNR shell. This emission is thought to originate from escaped high-energy CRs. We present a detailed analysis of the W 44 region as seen by Fermi-LAT, focusing on the spatial and spectral characteristics of both W 44 SNR and its surroundings. The spatial analysis was limited to energies above 1 GeV in order to exploit the improved angular resolution of the inst.ument, deriving a detailed description of the region morphology. Observations of the north-western region of W 44, also known as SRC-1 from previous works, were conducted with the MAGIC telescopes in the very high-energy gamma-ray band. We analysed MAGIC data exploiting the spatial information derived with the Fermi-LAT analysis at GeV energies. X-ray and gamma-ray binaries are systems consisting of a compact object and normally a non-degenerate companion star. Most of these sources have been shown to emit radiation in a broad frequency range, from radio up to X-rays and sometimes gamma rays. We report on recent results in very high-energy gamma rays above 100 GeV obtained by the MAGIC Collaboration for the Galactic X-ray binaries MAXI J1820+070 and 1A 0535+262, and the gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057. In the paper, the Wind Driven Optimization WDO algorithm is applied to the optimal shape design of a class of switched reluctance motors. The goal of the optimization is to identify a class of geometries which maximize the torque and simultaneously minimize the iron losses of the motor. Because of the twofold design criterion, the multi-objective version of the wind driven algorithm M-WDO is used. Results are eventually compared with those obtained by means of a standard genetic algorithm GA. © 2017 IEEE.

We implement and experimentally evaluate landmark- based oracles for min-cost paths in two different types of road networks with time-dependent arc-cost functions, based on distinct real-world historic traffic data: The road network for the metropolitan area of Berlin, and the national road network of Germany. Our first contribution is a significant improvement on the implementation of the FLAT oracle, which was proposed and experimentally tested in previous works. Regarding the implementation, we exploit parallelism to reduce preprocessing time and real-time responsiveness to live-traffic reports. We also adopt a lossless compression scheme that severely reduces preprocessing space and time requirements. As for the experimentation, apart from employing the new data set of Germany, we also construct several refinements and hybrids of the most prominent landmark sets for the city of Berlin. A significant improvement to the speedup of FLAT is observed: For Berlin, the average query time can now be as small as 83/isec, achieving a speedup (against.the time- dependent variant of Dijkstra's algorithm) of more than 1,119 in absolute running times and more than 1,570 in Dijkstra-ranks, with worst-case observed stretch less than 0.781%. For Germany, our experimental findings are analogous: The average query-response time can be 1.269msec, achieving a speedup of more than 902 in absolute running times, and 1,531 in Dijkstra-ranks, with worst-case stretch less than 1.534%. The Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 was associated with a bright, millisecond-timescale fast radio burst (FRB) which occured in April 2020, during a flaring episode. This was the first time an FRB was unequivocally associated with a Galactic source, and the first FRB for which the nature of the emitting source was identified. Moreover, it was the first FRB with a counterpart at another wavelength correlated in time, an atypical, hard X-ray burst, which provides clear evidence for accompanying non-thermal processes. The MAGIC Telescopes are Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) sensitive to very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma rays. Located at the center of the camera lies the MAGIC Central pixel, a single fully-modified photosensor-toreadout chain to measure millisecond-duration optical signals, displaying a maximum sensitivity at a wavelength of 350 nm. This allows MAGIC to operate simultaneously both as a VHE gammaray and a fast optical telescope. The MAGIC telescopes have monitored SGR 1935+2154 in a multiwavelength campaign involving X-ray, radio and optical facilities. In this contribution, we will show the results on the search for the VHE counterpart of the first SGR-FRB source in this multiwavelength context, as well as the search for fast optical bursts with the MAGIC Central Pixel. © 2021 Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Starting from the first announcement of unequivocal detection of very high energy (VHE) emission from a gamma-ray burst (GRB) by the MAGIC telescopes (GRB 190114C), four additional detections of VHE emission from GRBs by ground-based telescopes were reported. These observations have revealed a new, energetic component that has become an additional probe to explore GRB physics. In order to deepen our understanding of the origin of this new component, and in general of the origin of radiation from GRBs, further observations by VHE inst.uments are crucial. In this work we report fast follow-up observations by the MAGIC telescopes of GRB 201015A, a GRB detected by the Swift/BAT. As measured by BAT, the prompt emission lasted 9.8 ± 3.5 seconds, suggesting that this GRB belongs to the class of long events. This was later confirmed by optical observations, which allowed to measure the redshift (z = 0.42) and found the associated type Ic-BL supernova. Having a prompt isotropic-equivalent energy of Eiso ∼1050 erg, this GRB is a relatively low energy event as compared to the population of long GRBs. Observations with the MAGIC telescopes started about 30 seconds after the GRB onset and were performed under good observational conditions. The accurate analysis of the MAGIC data reveals a strong hint of detection and implies a significant energy release in the TeV range, smaller but comparable with that of the prompt emission in the keV-MeV band. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)
