A search for a charged Higgs boson, H ^±, produced in top-quark decays, t → H ^± b, is presented. The search targets H ^± decays into a bottom and a charm quark, H ^± → cb. The analysis focuses on a selection enriched in top-quark pair production, where one top quark decays into a leptonically decaying W boson and a bottom quark, and the other top quark decays into a charged Higgs boson and a bottom quark. This topology leads to a lepton-plus-jets final state, characterised by an isolated electron or muon and at least four jets. The search exploits the high multiplicity of jets containing b-hadrons, and deploys a neural network classifier that uses the kinematic differences between the signal and the background. The search uses a dataset of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy s = 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018 with the ATLAS detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb⁻¹. Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits between 0.15% (0.09%) and 0.42% (0.25%) are derived for the product of branching fractions B (t → H ^± b) × B(H ^± → cb) for charged Higgs boson masses between 60 and 160 GeV, assuming the SM production of the top-quark pairs. A search for high-mass charged and neutral bosons decaying to Wγ and Zγ final states is presented in this paper. The analysis uses a data sample of s = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb⁻¹ collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC Run 2 operation. The sensitivity of the search is determined using models of the production and decay of spin-1 charged bosons and spin-0/2 neutral bosons. The range of resonance masses explored extends from 1.0 TeV to 6.8 TeV. At these high resonance masses, it is beneficial to target the hadronic decays of the W and Z bosons because of their large branching fractions. The decay products of the high-momentum W/Z bosons are strongly collimated and boosted-boson tagging techniques are employed to improve the sensitivity. No evidence of a signal above the Standard Model backgrounds is observed, and upper limits on the production cross-sections of these bosons times their branching fractions to Wγ and Zγ are derived for various boson production models. We study how to efficiently transfer energy wirelessly in ad hoc networks of battery-limited devices, towards prolonging their lifetime. We assume a weak population of distributed devices which are exchanging energy in a "peer-topeer", manner with each other. We address a quite general case of diverse energy levels and priorities in the network and study the problem of how the system can efficiently reach a weighted energy balance state distributively. We present three protocols that achieve different performance trade-offs between energy balance quality, convergence time and energy efficiency.

The blazar TXS 0506+056 got into the spotlight of the astrophysical community in September 2017, when a high-energy neutrino detected by IceCube (IceCube-170922A) was associated at the 3 σ level to a γ-ray flare from this source. This multi-messenger photon-neutrino association remains, as per today, the most significant one ever observed. TXS 0506+056 was a poorly studied object before the IceCube-170922A event. To better characterize its broad-band emission, we organized a multi-wavelength campaign lasting 16 months (November 2017 to February 2019), covering the radio-band (Metsähovi, OVRO), the optical/UV (ASAS-SN, KVA, REM, Swift/UVOT), the X-rays (Swift/XRT, NuSTAR), the high-energy γ rays (Fermi/LAT) and the very-high-energy (VHE) γ rays (MAGIC). In γ rays, the behaviour of the source was significantly different from the 2017 one: MAGIC observations show the presence of flaring activity during December 2018, while the source only shows an excess at the 4 σ level during the rest of the campaign (74 hours of accumulated exposure);Fermi/LAT observations show several short (days-to-week timescale) flares, different from the long-term brightening of 2017. No significant flares are detected at lower energies. The radio light curve shows an increasing flux trend, not seen in other wavelengths. We model the multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions in a lepto-hadronic scenario, in which the hadronic emission emerges as Bethe-Heitler and pion-decay cascade in the X-rays and VHE γ rays. According to the model presented here, the December 2018 γ-ray flare was connected to a neutrino emission that was too brief and not bright enough to be detected by current neutrino inst.uments. © 2022, CC BY.

We address the problem of sequential parameter estimation over networks using the Bayesian methodology. Each node sequentially acquires independent observations, where all the observations in the network contain signal(s) with unknown parameters. The nodes aim at obtaining accurate estimates of the unknown parameters and to that end, they collaborate with their neighbors. They communicate to the neighbors their latest posterior distributions of the unknown parameters. The nodes fuse the received information by using mixtures with weights proportional to the predictive distributions obtained from the respective node posteriors. Then they update the fused posterior using the next acquired observation, and the process repeats. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach with computer simulations and confirm its validity.

Within the Information and Communication technology hype cycle the Internet of Things (IoT) represents a prominent subject, being rich in potentiality as well as in development issues. In this paper, we face the IoT developing process first “in the small” by designing the Smart Objects (SOs, representing the fundamental IoT building blocks) as agents, and after “in the large” by treating the IoT systems as Multi Agent Systems (MASs). Indeed, the agent abstraction is a suitable paradigm to inst.ll smartness and autonomy within a single SO and consequently to realize distributed, self-steering and heterogeneous IoT systems. In such directions, the Agent-based COoperating SO (ACOSO) middleware represents a viable solution for the programming, development and management of agent-based SO systems while its performance verification on different IoT networks of different scale has been made through the Omnet++ simulator.

This paper describes a two-part system that helps developers understand how to search and reuse complex software libraries. First, we present an approach for automatic retrieval of software components in reuse libraries. Second, the system implements a source-code recommendation approach which automatically constructs and delivers relevant code examples that demonstrate how the retrieved components can be used to solve particular programming problems. In arriving at such solutions, we utilize ontological modeling to provide semantic representation of the conceptual source-code knowledge in software libraries. This representation is the basis for computing entailments and enabling semantic reasoning. Our experiments show evidence that combining ontology formalisms with context-sensitive techniques enhance precision when retrieving and recommending reusable code even without mining a carefully crafted corpus of similar code.

Owing to the rising popularity of online social networking services (OSNs), studies on social influence and its diffusion have received significant attention from the research community. Prior research has mostly studied the impact of single-hop influence diffusion and multi-hop influence broadcast in online social networks. Very little research explores the idea of guiding (routing) multi-hop social influence towards a specific target. In this paper, we motivate the needs of timely routing social influence to formulate a new optimization problem, namely, Routing And Scheduling of Target-Oriented Social Influence Diffusion (RAS-TOSID). Accordingly, we propose the Efficient Routing And Scheduling with Social and Temporal decOmposition (ERASSTO) algorithm, which finds the optimal solution to RAS-TOSID in polynomial time. We carry out a user study by implementing ERASSTO in Facebook and conduct a comprehensive evaluation on ERASSTO and alternative approaches by simulation. The result shows that ERASSTO significantly outperforms other algorithms regarding solution quality and computational efficiency.

The rectilinear block packing problem is a problem of packing a set of rectilinear blocks into a larger rectangular container, where a rectilinear block is a polygonal block whose interior angles are either 90° or 270°. This problem has many applications, such as VLSI design and timber cutting. In this paper, we propose a new solution representation, based on an order of items, to decide a layout of rectilinear blocks whose x-coordinates are fixed. When the shapes of given items have certain characteristics, our representation guarantees optimality. We also generalize this result to the case of general shapes. We then propose an exact algorithm that iteratively generates x-coordinates of items and finds the corresponding optimal layout. The computational results show that our algorithm obtains five exact and one heuristic solutions for six inst.nces and it improves the running time of an existing algorithm.
