This paper introduces a preliminary extension of the Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM) architecture based on Lattice Computing (LC) techniques namely Linguistic Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (LFCM). The proposed LFCM is able to handle large scale data in pattern classification applications. This enhancement is achieved by applying a novel data meta-representation, defined in a mathematical lattice, including several advantages. Based on this mechanism a new FCM classifier model is constructed and its performance is studied herein. Preliminary experimental results are both promising and competitive. Future work extensions are discussed.

With advancing process technology, Chip-Multiprocessors (CMPs) are experiencing ever worsening reliability due to prolonged operational stresses. The network-on-chip that interconnects the components of CMPs is especially vulnerable to such wearout-induced failure. To tackle this ominous threat we present Clotho, a novel, wearout-aware routing algorithm. Clotho continuously considers the stresses the on-chip interconnect experiences at runtime, along with temperature and fabrication process variation metrics, steering traffic away from locations that are most prone to Electromigration (EM)- and Hot-Carrier Injection (HCI)-induced wear. Under realistic workloads Clotho yields 66% and 8% average increases in mean time to failure for EM and HCI, respectively.

In this work, we constructed diabetes predictive models using electronic health record data, which could potentially have better preventive power than other diabetes predictive models known according to our knowledge. Diabetes is one of the most common, costly and complicated diseases all over the world, including China. To tackle the complexity of diabetes, electronic health record has been widely used to support physicians in integrated care. However, diabetes predictive models using electronic health record may lack of preventive power when the clinical measurements directly related to diabetes diagnosis criteria are used. To overcome this limitation, we did not use glucose, insulin, C-peptide and HbA1C clinical measurements in classifying diabetes patients. We used decision-table and support vector machine algorithm to build predictive models. As the result, our decision-table-based model achieves accuracy of 0.879, AUC of 0.921, precision of 0.898 and recall of 0.904, which is comparable with any known definition to diabetes. Our support-vector-machine-based model achieves accuracy of 0.660, AUC of 0.584, precision of 0.652 and recall of 0.939. We also found 37 measurements significantly associated to diabetes, which are not directly related to diabetes diagnosis criteria. © 2015 IEEE.

Supporting self-management of patients is a highly challenging task, which needs to meaningfully exploit and interrelate approaches and technologies concerning interactive communication, personalized health and mobile learning. In line with these remarks, this paper reports on the development of an innovative clinical decision support platform for self-management of health and disease purposes. Work presented focuses on two basic components of the platform, namely a web-based collaboration support tool and a mobile application, both aiming to augment the interaction of all types of stakeholders with the platform. The functionality of the above components is sketched through a realistic use case.

The article describes problems in the area of engineering education in Russia. These problems were addressed by international TEMPUS project which involves several Russian universities, Association for engineering Education of Russia and four European universities (Tampere University of technology, Claude Bernard University Lyon 1, Saarland University, Chemnitz University of technology). This project's aim is the modernization of the Russian education system in accordance with international trends, best practices of European universities and account of Russia's cultural and educational traditions as well as needs of business and industry. The article analyses the experience of modernization of educational programs based on produced methodology. Currently obtained results of approbation of the methodology showed that the chosen modernization methods are an effective tool for solving the designated math-related problems in engineering education in Russian universities and, consequently, students will start to correspond more adequately to the labour market needs.

The perceived properties of a digital piano keyboard were studied in two experiments involving different types of vibrotactile cues in connection with sonic feedback. The first experiment implemented a free playing task in which subjects had to rate the perceived quality of the inst.ument according to five attributes: Dynamic control, Richness, Engagement, Naturalness, and General preference. The second experiment measured performance in timing and dynamic control in a scale playing task. While the vibrating condition was preferred over the standard nonvibrating setup in terms of perceived quality, no significant differences were observed in timing and dynamics accuracy. Overall, these results must be considered preliminary to an extension of the experiment involving repeated measurements with more subjects. © 2015 Federico Fontana et al.

Broadband is a public utility with positive effects on competitiveness, employment and growth. Although evidence shows that broadband development is increasing, this increment is not homogeneous between urban and rural areas. The main cause is the high cost for deploying next generation networks in rural areas, and especially the cost linked to civil engineering works. In order to overcome the investment challenges arising in the context of broadband deployment, the European Commission made mandatory the sharing of existing telecommunication and non-telecommunication infrastructures and facilities. This paper proposes and presents a novel tool that enables the estimation of the expected savings from exploiting existing infrastructures when deploying a broadband network. This is followed by a number of general principles and recommendations that policy makers and national authorities could embrace to diminish deployment costs and promote broadband deployment.

A Bell test is a randomized trial that compares experimental observations against.the philosophical worldview of local realism1, in which the properties of the physical world are independent of our observation of them and no signal travels faster than light. A Bell test requires spatially distributed entanglement, fast and high-efficiency detection and unpredictable measurement settings2,3. Although technology can satisfy the first two of these requirements4–7, the use of physical devices to choose settings in a Bell test involves making assumptions about the physics that one aims to test. Bell himself noted this weakness in using physical setting choices and argued that human ‘free will’ could be used rigorously to ensure unpredictability in Bell tests8. Here we report a set of local-realism tests using human choices, which avoids assumptions about predictability in physics. We recruited about 100,000 human participants to play an online video game that incentivizes fast, sustained input of unpredictable selections and illustrates Bell-test methodology9. The participants generated 97,347,490 binary choices, which were directed via a scalable web platform to 12 laboratories on five continents, where 13 experiments tested local realism using photons5,6, single atoms7, atomic ensembles10, and superconducting devices11. Over a 12-hour period on 30 November 2016, participants worldwide provided a sustained data flow of over 1,000 bits per second to the experiments, which used different human-generated data to choose each measurement setting. The observed correlations strongly contradict local realism and other realistic positions in bipartite and tripartite12 scenarios. Project outcomes include closing the ‘freedom-of-choice loophole’ (the possibility that the setting choices are influenced by ‘hidden variables’ to correlate with the particle properties13), the utilization of video-game methods14 for rapid collection of human generated randomness, and the use of network

Automated multi-contrast brain pathological area extraction from 2D MR images

The aim of this work is to propose the fully automated pathological area extraction from multi-parametric 2D MR images of brain. The proposed method is based on multi-resolution symmetry analysis and automatic thresholding. The proposed algorithm first detects the presence of pathology and then starts its extraction. T2 images are used for the presence detection and the multi-contrast MRI is used for the extraction, concretely T2 and FLAIR images. The extraction is based on thresholding, where Otsu's algorithm is used for the automatic determination of the threshold. Since the method is based on symmetry, it works for both axial and coronal planes. In both these planes of healthy brain, the approximate left-right symmetry exists and it is used as the prior knowledge for searching the approximate pathology location. It is assumed that this area is not located symmetrically in both hemispheres, which is met in most cases. The detection algorithm was tested on 203 T2-weighted images and reached the true positive rate of 87.52% and true negative rate of 93.14%. The extraction algorithm was tested on 357 axial and 443 coronal real images from publicly available BRATS databases containing 3D volumes brain tumor patients. The results were evaluated by Dice Coefficient (axial: 0.85 ± 0.11, coronal 0.82 ± 0.18) and by Accuracy (axial: 0.96 ± 0.05, coronal 0.94 ± 0.09). © 2015 Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
