Although statistical graph comprehension has been investigated in cognitive psychology, it has not been reported in cognitive neuroscience. The study designed an experimental condition, i.e., a statistical graph (SG), and two control conditions, i.e., a text (ST) and a statistical graph with text (SGT), where the ST is a verbal description of the information from the SG, and the SGT is a mixed graph + textual description. We used fMRI to analyze the brain activity of 36 normal subjects while they passively view the statistical information presented in any of SG, ST, and SGT. The results indicate that statistical graph comprehension requires the involvement of both ventral and dorsal streams, with more dependence on the ventral stream than the dorsal. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Given their wide applicability, several sparse high-resolution spectral estimation techniques and their implementation have been examined in the recent literature. In this work, we further the topic by examining a computationally efficient implementation of the recent SMLA algorithms in the missing data case. The work is an extension of our implementation for the uniformly sampled case, and offers a notable computational gain as compared to the alternative implementations in the missing data case.

The work described in this paper combines our existing work on virtual 3D worlds and progressive education, applying it in order to support tbe education of S-BPM. The application of the approaches results in a demonstrator developed for S-BPM-One 2014 conference. The paper presents the underlying theory and motivation for the demonstrator. The paper introduces the concept of a fractal-like multimodal transportation network (FMTN) in which several isomorphic subnetworks interact each other via distinguished subsets of common shared workstations as to provide a variety of demand-responsive work-piece transportation/handling services. The set of transportation modes supporting production flows within the FMTN environment is considered. In that context, a fractal-like layout of FMS equipped with AGVS where work-piece flows are treated as multimodal processes can be seen as a real-life example of this model. In opposite to the traditional approach we assume that the given network of local cyclic acting AGV services, i.e. corresponding to distinguished isomorphic subnetworks of FMS layout. The goal is to provide a declarative model enabling to state a constraint satisfaction problem aimed at multimodal transportation processes scheduling encompassing production flows.

Broadband is starting to be deemed by many as a public utility and several countries have already recognized it as a civil right. The European Commission (EC) acknowledging the significance of broadband services for the improvement of citizen welfare and its economic benefits, has put in place targets for the diffusion of broadband to all citizens and businesses in the European Union. This paper, comparatively assesses the current state of affairs in broadband and digital public services in selected South East Europe countries in order to identify weaknesses and highlight strengths and to produce knowledge resources and provide insights that will support informed decision making including strategy and policy planning. It builds on three surveys that took place in the second quarter of 2013 and evidence gathered from seven South East Europe countries.

Obesity is a prevalent disease with severe complications. In recent years, interests have been geared towards exploring the relationship between gut microbial factors and the subject's degree of, or propensity to, obesity. With the relative abundance values of phylotypes as features, machine learning algorithms could be applied to identify predictive microbes that distinguish between subjects of different types, and infer the corresponding rules that describe “how” the differentiation is made. However, the relative abundance is influenced by a number of upstream factors, and the inherent information content can often times limit the validity of the inferred rules. We addressed this issue by structurally incorporating association measures into interpretable classifiers. The resulting model renders microbial abundance patterns that are both statistically significant and predictively valid. Although we concentrated on obesity in this paper, the proposed approach is applicable on 16S rRNA datasets of other domains as well. The inferred patterns are in line with current knowledge of the microbial world, while providing new insights on the interactions between microbial factors, and their effects on the host. As such, they are believed to constitute credible starting points for further research.

Localization of sources of brain electrical activity from electroencephalographic and magnetoencephalographic recordings is an ill-posed inverse problem. Therefore, the best one can hope for is to derive a source localization method which is guaranteed to find sources belonging to the set of possible solutions to this problem. Recently, a few methods with this property have been proposed as a non-trivial generalizations of the classical neural activity index based on the linearly constrained minimum-variance (LCMV) spatial filtering technique. In this paper we propose a family of reduced-rank activity indices achieving maximum value when evaluated at true source locations for uncorrelated dipole sources and any nonzero rank constraint. This fact shows in particular that this key property is not confined to a selected few activity indices. We present a series of numerical simulations evaluating localization performance of the proposed activity indices. We also give an overview of areas of future research which should be considered as an extension of the results of this paper. In particular, we discuss how new families of activity indices can be derived based on the proposed technique. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

The MusiNet research project aims to provide a comprehensive architecture and a prototype implementation of a complete Networked Music Performance (NMP) system. In this paper we describe the current status of the project, focusing on critical decisions regarding the system's architecture and specifications, the low delay audio and video coding techniques to be employed, the media relay design, and the synchronous and asynchronous collaboration algorithms to be adopted.

In this paper, we consider a multirate teletraffic loss model for the calculation of congestion probabilities in a Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA) cell that utilizes the Bandwidth Reservation (BR) policy and supports calls generated by a finite number of users. The BR policy is used particularly to equalize congestion probabilities among calls of different service-classes. In the proposed model we consider multiple access interference, the notion of local blocking, user's activity and interference cancellation. We show that the calculation of congestion probabilities is based on approximate but recursive formulas, whose accuracy is verified through simulation and found to be quite satisfactory.

Whereas buying and preserving a huge number of devices used in educational process whether it is licensed software and/or original hardware require great investment and special skills to support them in the current financial crisis which affect the growing needs while the Higher Education System is facing many obstacles in supplying vital technology support for educational process and its performance measurements. This paper highlights the advantages of Cloud Computing which is the better mechanism for using ICT to enhance Egyptian Higher Education, such technology provides easy accessibility and scalability, storage and cost minimization. Accordingly, implementing the proposed framework of the Hybrid Cloud Computing for the Egyptian Virtual University will have a significant contribution for enhancing the educational process in the country.
