Ring-based WDM-PONs can employ a single dedicated wavelength channel to interconnect the Optical Network Units (ONUs) thus providing a means for inter-ONU communication and downstream wavelength sharing. In this paper, a new TDM dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm for inter-ONU communication is proposed, which takes into account the destination of the ONUs on the ring. The main purpose of this 'Destination-Aware' (DestAware) algorithm is to improve the network inter-ONU communication performance without any additional cost. Performance results show that by considering the destination of the ONUs during the bandwidth allocation process both line utilization and experienced delay are improved.

Power management mechanism exploiting network and video information over wireless links

This article examines the ways in which crosslayer information from higher network layers may be utilized for more efficient power management in wireless networks and energy constrained mobile devices. In particular, we present and evaluate mechanisms that fine-tune transmission power according to information received from the transport (feedback reports from TFRC) and application (type of the video frame encoded) layers. Further improvements may be applied if the video encoding is done using capabilities of the SVC standard. We also describe power management adaptation techniques for wireless video transmission using the TFRC protocol that take into account feedback about the received video quality and try to adapt transmitting power accordingly. The purpose of the mechanisms is to utilize TFRC feedback and thus achieve a beneficial balance between the power consumption and the received video quality. The mechanisms proposed, offer significant improvements when used in terms of both power consumption and received video quality. All proposals are compared and evaluated using simulation. © 2013 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

We propose two ensemble regression algorithms for forecasting the daily price of crude oil from features extracted from the U.S. Energy Administration and some international news agencies. An ensemble regression model consists of a group of homogeneous regressors with varying parameters, e.g. Linear regression models with different ridge regularization parameters. The first ensemble method called "recent leader" picks the individual regressor with least mean square error over recent data. The second model called "exponentially weighted ensemble" combines individual regressors in a linear fashion with weights of constituent models decaying exponentially with the mean square error over past predictions. These two methods were tested with linear regression, support vector regression, decision trees and Gaussian processes. Exponentially weighted ensemble with support vector regression had the best performance.

This paper presents a concept for a new method to provide the authentication and confidentiality using zero knowledge protocol and key exchange. Zero knowledge proof protocol is a essential component of cryptography, which in recent years has increasingly popular amongst scholars. Its applications have widened and it has made inroads in several areas including mathematics and network safety and so on. This simple protocol based on zero knowledge proof by which user can prove to the authentication server that he has the password without having to send the password to the server either clear text or in encrypted format. This is a protocol in which the data learned by one party (i.e., The inspector) allow him/her to verify that a statement is true but does not reveal any additional information. In this paper we first discuss about zero-knowledge protocol proof system of knowledge and also key exchange between users and which then is modified into an authentication scheme with secret key exchange for confidentiality. The whole protocol involves mutual identification of two users, exchange of a random common secret key or session key for the verification of public keys.

Internet security issues require authorship identification for all kinds of internet contents; however, authorship identification for microblog users is much harder than other documents because microblog texts are too short. Moreover, when the number of candidates becomes large, i.e., big data, it will take long time to identify. Our proposed method solves these problems. The experimental results show that our method successfully identifies the authorship with 53.2% of precision out of 10,000 microblog users in the almost half execution time of previous method.

Large scale distributed agent-based simulations run on several computing units (e.g., virtual machines in the Cloud, nodes in a supercomputer). Classically, these systems try to (re-)load-balance the nodes as overloaded nodes slow down the *** another challenge in large scale distributed simulations is that the overall load evolves. In this paper we leverage on commodity computing to adapt resource provisioning (number of computing units) to the load during the execution of the simulation. We also propose an asynchronous migration mechanism that migrate workload between computing nodes efficiently when nodes wait for synchronisation barriers to happen. We validate our implementation on a scenario simulating one day of vehicular traffic in Tokyo, running on 2 to 8 machines depending on the demand. Our evaluation shows a 26% reduction in data migration time compared to a naive migration approach between computing units. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Students' attendance records of classes are primary and required data to manage a course and to take care of students, but a recording task causes extra burden and loss of lecturing time. An attendance management system using student identification card with IC chip has been proposed and implemented in several universities. Even those systems work well, there are obstacles to inst.ll them to other inst.tutes such as an initial cost of systems and the modification costs for pre-inst.lled systems such as an e-Learning system. This paper describes a new attendance management system on Moodle using Android devices as a reader of FeliCa(R) Common-use Format (FCF) type student identification card. The proposed system has been tested for a few courses of autumn semester in 2013 on test Moodle. Since spring semester in 2014, it is inst.lled on campuswide Moodle system and works for one running course.

Interactive question based learning method is widely used in academic inst.tutions in order to teach effectively in large classrooms and to manage responses from the audience. Clicker is one such software developed by Vanderbilt University suitable for desktops. Another type of clicker, Crick software, is dependent on the operating system and need specific software to run and thus, did not allow the application to run in all systems. But, our proposed Quassi Classe' is web based and is independent of operating system and software. It just requires a browser, from where we can access it through an URL and will be more user-friendly and easier to access and process. Quassi Classe' is used in a classroom to teach the students effectively and to evaluate performance of the students by keeping records of quizzes, generating reports and solving doubts. It provides the facility to the inst.uctor to interact with students by conducting quiz, collecting answers of individual students, and evaluating each student in that session. The application is easy-to-adopt and enhances the learning experience and helps the student to have a better understanding and by virtue of its simplicity, can be of great application in a classroom session and it can be deployed in different colleges.

This paper deals with the 3D FEM analysis of a novel magnetic levitation (maglev) train driven by an air-cored tubular linear induction motor. This new maglev system originates from Electromagnetic Launcher (EML) technology, especially the Linear Induction Launcher (LIL) type. Some 2D magnetic analyses based on current sheet model or transmission line approach for the LIL type launchers are available in the literature but this paper provides an alternative way to analyze LIL type of EMLs by using 3D Finite Element Method (FEM). The analysis examines into the variation of propulsion, levitation, and guidance forces induced in the moving part. It is expected that the possible results of this magnetic analysis will lead some new and important design considerations for the novel maglev system.

In Large Area Air Shower experiments, one of EAS arrays is deployed on the second floor of four stories building in the campus of Okayama University of Science to limit the zenith angle acceptance of muon detection. This system provide EAS muon intensities from zenith solid angles. To compare these intensities with solar activities such as flares, CME and magneticstorms, LAAS data have been analyzed. Faster data acquisition with Ha/CaK solar telescope have also been carried out. In this presentation, cosmic ray variations for four years since 2011 are going to be reported as well as fast image data.
