Image exams are a fundamental tool in health care for decision making. A challenge in Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is to provide a timely answer that complies with the specialist's expectation. There are different systems with different techniques to CBIR in literature. However, even with so much research, there are still particular challenges to be overcame, such as the semantic gap. In this paper, we presented a new spinal-image comparison method based on the perception of specialists during his/her analysis of spine lesions. We take advantage of a color extractor and propose a shape descriptor considering the visual patterns that the radiologists use to recognize anomalies in images. The experiments shown that our approach achieved promising results, testifying that the automatic comparison of images should consider all relevant visual aspects and comparisons' criteria, which are defined by the specialists. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

We describe a three-stage model of computing inst.uction beginning with a simple, highly scaffolded programming en-vironment (Kodu) and progressing to more challenging frame-works (Alice and Lego NXT-G). In moving between frame-works, students explore the similarities and differences in how concepts such as variables, conditionals, and looping are realized. This can potentially lead to a deeper under-standing of programming, bringing students closer to true computational thinking. Some novel strategies for teach-ing with Kodu are outlined. Finally, we briefly report on our methodology and select preliminary results from a pi-lot study using this curriculum with students ages 10-17, including several with disabilities. Conventional all-optical restoration strategies like p-cycle achieve very fast restoration with high spare capacity consumption. In contrast, failure dependent protection (FDP) can achieve near-optimal capacity efficiency at the cost of high signaling/control complexity (so as for long restoration time). In this paper, we investigate a previously reported all-optical restoration framework that aims to yield a restoration speed similar to p-cycle while achieving near optimal resource consumption as FDP. In particular, we propose a simple yet efficient heuristic for joint allocation of monitoring trails and protection lightpaths, which serves as the key to enable the all-optical restoration. The resultant all-optical restoration framework is further examined by extensive simulations regarding the network resource consumption, number of transmitters, monitoring requirement, and running time.

The development of effective and efficient ways of handling real-world applications is becoming increasingly widespread, yet it still faces a number of practical challenges. First and foremost, we have the limited availability of labeled data in contrast to an unbounded number of unlabeled ones. Despite some efforts in active semi-supervised learning, their success depends on an approach suitable to be applied to real massive data. In this paper, we introduce a novel integration of semi-supervised learning and a priori-reduction and organization criteria for active learning based on Optimum-Path Forest classifiers. Encouraging results on both public and real data show the synergy of these strategies jointly. Our approach iteratively generates semi-supervised classifiers that attain high accuracy by selecting the most representative labeled set, while decreasing the propagated errors on the unlabeled set. In addition, it is able to identify samples from all classes quickly while keeping user interaction to a minimum throughout the learning iterations.

In the last decade of Wireless Network security, using text and biometrics for various types of security problems has gained popularity. This research work merges both, the concepts of packet scheduling and the network security issues of the wireless data packets exchange. To achieve the high Quality-of-Service (QoS) in WLAN, we have replaced the existing Automated Security Aware Packet Scheduling Algorithm (ASPS) with novel Bio-cryptic Security-Aware Packet Scheduling-Algorithm (BSPS). This BSPS Algorithm besides assuring the best performance in packet delivery ratio, load on network switch and also intensifying the security level to the desirable WN by applying Bio-cryptographic methods in each security level. Our simulation outcome proves that our scheme is performing better than existing algorithms in terms of the quality of security.

This paper addresses the problem of leader election in virtual traffic lights. A virtual traffic light (VTL) is a self-organizing traffic control system that allows road vehicles equipped with vehicle-to-vehicle communication facilities to implement the function of a traffic light without the support of a roadside inst.llation. Previous research has shown that it is impossible to construct a leader election protocol that guarantees agreement among the participating vehicles in the presence of massive communication failures. The paper addresses the problem of calculating the probability of disagreement in situations where a large number of protocol messages are lost due to communication interference, so-called communication grey-outs. To this end, we present a probabilistic analysis of a family of simple round-based consensus algorithms that solve the 1-of-n selection problem. We propose to use these algorithms for the core logic of a VTL leader election protocol (LEP). Our analysis shows that the probability of disagreement depends on: i) the number of vehicles involved in the leader election, ii) the number of rounds of message exchange, iii) the probability of message loss, and iv) the decision criterion used by the LEP. We propose an optimistic and a pessimistic decision criterion for the proposed 1-of-n selection algorithms. The analysis encompasses two probabilistic failure models, one for symmetric communication failures and one for asymmetric communication failures.

Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) are becoming more essential to wireless communications due to growing popularity of mobile devices. MANETs are also essential in Emergency Response situation where network information flow between deployed units is vital. In such cases voice and video transmission is essential to form a global view of the situation and decide on action. However, MANETs do not seem to effectively support multimedia applications and especially video transmission. In this work we evaluate the use of multiple interfaces and multiple channels for Video Transmission in Emergency Response Ad hoc Networks. We also evaluate the video transmission with rate adaptation. Aim of this paper is to tune multi-interfaces and multi-channels video transmission mechanisms in order to support better emerging situations and offer a solution to have acceptable transmission of the necessary video streams so that the control can get a complete overall picture of the situation and decide on the action to be taken. The simulation evaluation performed shows that multi-interfaces and multi-channels video transmission offers many advantages in Video Transmission in Emergency Response Ad hoc Networks.

With rapid increase in the deployment of high-definition surveillance cameras, the need of efficient video analytics for extracting video objects from high-resolution surveillance videos in real time has become more and more demanding. Conventional background modeling methods, e.g., the Gaussian mixture modeling (GMM), although having long been proven to be effective for foreground object extraction, are actually not efficient enough for the real-time analysis of high-resolution videos. We thus propose a novel background modeling approach using nonparametric histogramming that can derive a holistic, histogram-based background model for each pixel with low computational complexity. Due to the simple algorithm design, the proposed approach can be easily implemented by fixed-point computation. Without using any accelerator (like CUDA, Intel SIMD, or Intel IPP library), multi-threading or sub-sampling technique, our implementation of the proposed algorithm achieves high efficiency for the processing of 1920×1080 color videos at ~18.81 fps on a general computer (Intel Core i7 3.4GHz CPU). In the experimental comparisons, the proposed approach is ~3.9 times faster than the GMM, while giving comparable foreground segmentation results.

Although still considered experimental by some, computerized posturography is becoming more and more the standard assessment of balance and neuromuscular control mechanisms while standing. However, there is no consensus as to the data acquisition parameters to be used. Depending on which posturography school one belongs to, acquisition frequencies vary from a few Hz all the way to 1 kHz, and little attention is usually given to the post-sampling filter cut-off frequency (implemented either in the hardware or in the software used to acquire the data), often without realizing the consequences such choices will have on the results. But the sampling and the filter cut-off frequencies are particularly important when dealing with spectral analysis or when secondary measurements such as the center of pressure coordinates, sway path length, velocity or acceleration are calculated from the measured forces and moments. In this paper, frequency content of vertical ground reaction force and center of pressure path coordinates excursion were determined for 946 subjects of both genders, with various age, height, body type, health status and nationality. The results of this spectral analysis made it possible to draw some general conclusions as to what should be a proper acquisition frequency for posturographic data. © 2013 by ISA - inst.umentation Systems & Automation Society.
