This paper presents an integration of Wavelet and Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) based lighting normalization, and shifting-mean Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) based face classifiers for face recognition. The aims are to provide robust recognition rate against.large face variability due to lighting variations and to avoid retraining problem of the classical LDA for incremental data. In addition, the compact holistic features is employed for dimensional reduction of the raw face image. From the experimental results, the proposed method gives sufficient and robust achievement in terms of recognition rate and requires short computational time.

In Cognitive Radio (CR) Networks, the licensed but vacant spectrum bands are shared by the unlicensed users (CR users) in an opportunistic manner. The CR users should operate and cohabit in the licensed bands without causing any interference to the Primary Users (PUs). This CR user cohabitation which is managed by a spectrum Coordinator, enables several design challenges. Therefore, A User Cohabitation Coordinator, UCC, should be designed considering the heterogeneous Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for the CR users and the short-term fluctuations in the available licensed spectrum bands. Moreover, the spectrum coordination among the CR network operators for CR users should also be considered by the UCC for an effective and fair spectrum sharing. Considering these challenges, the main contribution of this paper is to design a QoS-based spectrum coordinator for CR user cohabitation in order to achieve high throughput and fairness. The proposed UCC uses the first-difference filter clustering and correlation based PU modeling to integrate the fluctuations of the PU activities into the spectrum sharing. The UCC characterizes the QoS requirements of CR users by adopting queuing theoretic models. The proposed scheme enables the cohabitation of the CR operators dynamically. The evaluations demonstrate that the proposed UCC provides high throughput while maintaining the fairness in the CR networks.

Given the rapid expansion of car ownership worldwide, vehicle safety is an increasingly critical issue in the automobile industry. The reduced cost of cameras and optical devices has made it economically feasible to deploy front-mounted intelligent systems for visual-based event detection. Prior to vehicle event detection, detecting vehicles robustly in real time is challenging, especially conducting detection process in images captured by a dynamic camera. Therefore, in this paper, a robust vehicle detector is developed. Our contribution is three-fold. Road modeling is first proposed to confine detection area for maintaining low computation complexity and reducing false alarms as well. Haar-like features and eigencolors are then employed for the vehicle detector. To tackle the occlusion problem, chamfer distance is used to estimate the probability of each individual vehicle. AdaBoost algorithm is used to select critical features from a combined high dimensional feature set. Experiments on an extensive dataset show that our proposed system can effectively detect vehicles under different lighting and traffic conditions, and thus demonstrates its feasibility in real-world environments. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents human-robot communication for a monitoring support system in an Intelligent Space. An Intelligent Space (iSpace) is a space in which many intelligent devices are inst.lled to observe the user's environment. In this paper, we apply the iSpace observation function to a monitoring system used for maintaining the safety of elderly persons receiving home-care support. In addition, we use a mobile robot as a tool to deliver monitoring results to care assistants. We focus on an ethological approach for designing robot behaviors for human-robot communication. The implementation of these robot behaviors based on an ethological approach, and the results of an experiment conducted to evaluate these behaviors, are then presented. © 2012 IFAC.

NS-2 (Network Simulator) is one of the most popular discrete event simulators used for network simulation. Trace files produced by NS-2 provide very useful information for post simulation analysis. This paper presents the architecture and development considerations for a TRAce FILe analysis tool, which intends to simplify the management of trace files generated during network simulations. The tool is focused on NS-2 trace files, but can be extended to handle a variety of simulation trace files formats. Its purpose is to make the execution of a large number of network simulations faster, and the extraction of results from a large amount of data more flexible and productive. TRAFIL introduces a novel way of interpreting, parsing, reading and eventually utilizing NS-2 trace files by using "metafiles" and "sub-metafiles" during the trace file recognition and process procedures, making the overall operations more abstract, substantially efficient and faster than alternative approaches. Furthermore, TRAFIL facilitates the whole trace file analysis task, offering the opportunity to store each trace file as well as every measurement produced for each trace file. The tool aims to aid the analysis of simulation results offering features that other tools in this area have been missing.

The function of the parahippocampal place area (PPA) is a matter of debate. We investigated this issue in fMRI experiment by 36 normal subjects using two types of tasks: figure and text. Furthermore, the figure tasks contain two kinds of contextual associations: one is among items;the other is among items and their locations which refers to the spatial contextual associations. In contrast, the text tasks contain only item contextual associations - they do not have any spatial information. The results showed that the right PPA located at anterior lingual gyrus and left anterior parahippocampal gyrus nearby amygdala were significantly activated during both figure and text tasks, which indicate that the PPA is more involved in associative information processing. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, we deal with the cyclic scheduling problem usually observed in the FMS producing multi-type parts where the AGVS plays a role of a material handling system. Finding the conditions guaranteeing the AGVs dead-lock-free and collision-free movement policy is the aim of this work. The AGVs co-sharing the common parts of the transportation route while executing repetitive processes, i.e. being assigned to AGVs passing along machines in a cyclic way, can be modeled in terms of Cyclic Concurrent Process Systems (CCPS). Schedulability analysis for a given CCPS answers the question whether a cyclic schedule exists or not. The paper suggests a novel approach for schedulability analysis employing the declarative modeling. The sufficient conditions guaranteeing CCPS schedulability are discussed and the recursive approach to their designing is proposed. © 2012 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Motion segmentation for articulated objects is an important topic of research. Yet such a segmentation should be as free as possible from underlying assumptions so as to fit general scenes and objects. In this paper we demonstrate an algorithm for articulated motion segmentation of 3D point clouds, free of any assumptions on the underlying model and yet firmly set in a well-defined variational framework. Results on scanned images show the generality of the proposed technique and its robustness to scanning artifacts and noise. © The Eurographics Association 2012.

In this work, we propose an efficient resource management approach for WDM-PON ring architectures that supports dynamic bandwidth allocation and sharing of downstream wavelengths. We propose a modification in the ONU design, to dynamically setup virtual circuits for inter-ONU communication. The reservation mechanism is arbitrated by the OLT, which also monitors the traffic imbalances of downstream channels.
