Handheld electrolarynx is a popular device used to produce voice by laryngectomized patients. A switching capacitor CMOS based device for hands free electrolarynx activation using electromyographic signals, is proposed. The prototype intends to give laryngectomized patients an option to produce voice in a more comfortable and natural way. The prototype is designed to be implanted as a low voltage microchip for automatic activation of any electrolarynx by using the myoelectric signals exhibited by muscles. The prototype system exhibits an excellent simulated performance from the bioamplifier through the activation microcontroller using a simulated electromyographic signal.

In this paper, we present work that we have carried out in extending the ns-2 simulator in order to study and validate Quality of Service issues and related architectures. In the case of the DiffServ framework, simulation is valuable since an analytical approach of mechanisms and services is infeasible due to the aggregation and multiplexing of flows. This paper covers work in extending ns-2 functionality towards the direction of realistic traffic generation and a series of mechanisms defined by the DiffServ architecture. We have also extended ns-2 with the functionality of Bandwidth Brokers, which are entities for managing the resources and negotiating end to end resource reservations between domains. The Bandwidth Broker ns-2 implementation is useful for studying the related architectures and admission control procedures.

This paper presents an approach to Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based computer-aided autonomous electromagnetic:sign of 2-phase Switched Reluctance Motor drives. The proposed drive is designed for compressor drives in low-priced refrigerators as an alternative to existing brushless DC motors drives with rare-earth magnets. In the proposed design approach, three GA loops work to optimize the lamination design so as to meet the requirements for the target application under the given constraints while simultaneously fine-tuning the control parameters. To achieve the design optimization within an acceptable CPU-time, the repeated-calculation required to obtain fitness evaluation in the proposed approach does not use FEM, but consists of geometric flux tube-based non-linear magnetic analysis and a dynamic simulator based on an analytical expression of the magnetizing curves obtained from the non-linear magnetic analysis. The design results show the proposed approach can autonomously find a feasible design solution of SRM drive for the target application from huge search space. The experimental studies using a 2-phase 8/6 prototype manufactured in accordance with the optimized design parameters show the validity of the proposed approach.

Use of laser-driven Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) for space propulsion has been examined in several earlier conceptual design studies. However, these designs used older ICF target technology. Important new directions opened following the development of "chirped" lasers capable of ultra-short ps pulses with powers of PWs. This allows fast ignition (FI) for high energy gain ICF power plants1. The FI approach uses a conventional laser to pre-compress the target to high density. The PW laser is then fired on the compressed target, creating an internal electron beam that ignites fusion in a central core of the target. It is estimated that using a 10 TW-ps laser for FI can achieve fusion energy gains >103. Here a new type of FI, termed block ignition, is considered2-4. This approach can further increase the fusion gain offered through FI. Application of block ignition to the earlier VISTA design for ICF space propulsion unit is considered here. With the improved performance obtained, it becomes feasible to bypass DT fusion and use tritium-lean D targets as a first step for development of fusion propulsion technology.

In this paper, a discrete stochastic dynamic programming model for the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) downlink scheduler with multi-state Markov channel model is presented. The model then solved numerically (using Markov Decision Process and Dynamic Programming) to find the optimal policy for the case of two users sharing the same cell using a 3-state channel. The optimal policy is the one that maximizes the system throughput while main-taining a level of fairness between users. Simulation is used to study the performance of the resulted optimal policy and compared with Round Robin (RR) scheduler. The effects of the allowable number of channel states and the fairness factor on the optimal policy performance were also studied. Copyright 2007 ACM.
