In this paper, a novel method for Cued Speech language recognition is proposed. A multimodal processing framework is developed for the efficient fusion of the modalities under consideration. The robust feature extraction from the audio, lip shape and gesture modalities is also discussed. Moreover, the inherent correlation among the signals is modelled using a modified Coupled Hidden Markov Model. The contribution of each modality to the fused decision is modified by assessing its reliability and assigning a weighting factor to improve the accuracy of the recognized words. The method is experimentally evaluated and is shown to outperform methods that rely only on the perceivable information to infer the transmitted messages.

Organizing wireless sensor networks into clusters enables the efficient utilization of the limited energy resources of the deployed sensor nodes. If the network is organized into heterogeneous clusters, where some more powerful nodes take on the cluster head role to control network operation, it is important to ensure that energy dissipation of these cluster heads and "critical sensor nodes" is balanced. We propose a Cluster Head Scheduling scheme to determine which cluster head should be turned off or on. The proposed mechanism is based on the coverage information as well as residual battery power, which can lead to more uniform energy dissipation among cluster head nodes and critical sensor nodes, thus increasing network lifetime. Moreover, the proposed scheme strengthens the robustness of heterogeneous sensor networks .

For the simulation of the impregnation process of Resin Transfer Moulding, the permeability of the textile is a key input parameter. Using Darcy’s law, the permeability can be derived from a numerical simulation of the fluid flow for a unit cell problem. In this paper we present the results of simulations with a Stokes solver, implemented in the permeability predicting software FlowTex. The results are compared with those of a Navier‐Stokes solver and validated using theoretical results for model problems and with experimental data for real textiles.

The MEMSTEL (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems Space Telescope) is a space-based experiment being designed to investigate the origin of extreme energy cosmic-ray (EECR) particles above 5 × 1019 eV. The fluorescent light generated in extensive air showers (EAS) when EECRs hit the atmosphere can be detected from low Earth orbit. MEMSTEL will implement a novel idea of a tracking mirror based on semiconductor MEMS technology. The light signal will be focused on a relatively small area of readout photo-sensors using a tracking mirror. One candidate for MEMSTEL photo-sensors is the conventional multi-anode photo multiplier tube (PMT). Recently, a new type of photo-sensor was developed for particle detector readouts - The silicon photo multiplier (Si-PM). This compact photo-sensor is comprised of a large array of micro-cells operating in a limited Geiger mode, and provides high gain (∼ 10 6) with low operating voltage (∼ 50 V). The compact design, light weight and low power consumption make this device an excellent photon-detector candidate for space-based experiments. In this paper, we report on the comparative performance of a 1 × 1mm2 Si-PM, a conventional PMT, and a Hybrid Photo Diode (HPD) in lab tests, reading out light generated by Light Emitting Diode (LED) as well as by scintillating fibers excited with a radioactive source.

User modelling in on-line distance learning is an important research field focusing on two important aspects: describing and predicting students' actions and intentions as well as adapting the learning process to students' features, habits, preferences, and so on. The aim is to greatly stimulate and improve the learning experience. Indeed, on the one hand, students' intentions may change during the realization of learning activities and thus their actions evolve accordingly as the learning process moves forward. On the other hand, adaptive systems can effectively plan and design appropriate learning tasks according to students' features, habits and interests with the aim of facilitating the achievement of the learning goal. In this context, user modelling implies a continuous processing and analysis of user interaction data during long-term learning activities, which produces large and considerably complex information. As a consequence, processing this information is costly and could require computational capacity beyond that of a single computer. In this paper, we show how a grid approach can considerably decrease the processing time of log data of on-line distance educational Web-based systems. Our prototype is based on the master-worker paradigm and is implemented using a peer-to-peer platform running on the Planetlab nodes. The results of our study show the feasibility of using grid middleware to speed and scale up the processing of log data and thus achieve an efficient and dynamic user modeling in on-line distance learning

High pressure deuterium annealing was applied to nano-scale strained CMOS devices and its effect was characterized in terms of charge pumping, hot carrier, NBTI and DNBTI stress, and normalized drain current noise spectral density for the first time. The characteristics of tensile stressed NMOS devices were improved by the annealing. But for PMOS, especially compressive stressed devices showed degraded characteristics by the annealing.

The admission control issue in the design of a centralized bandwidth broker model for dynamic control and management of QoS provisioning is studied. A two-phase differentiated flow treatment based dynamic admission control scheme under the centralized bandwidth broker model is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the flow requests are classified into two classes and get differentiated treatment according to their QoS demands. We demonstrate that this admission control scheme can not only improve the resource utilization but also guarantee the flows' QoS. Furthermore, the admission control is divided into two phases: edge admission control and interior admission control. During the interior phase, the PoQ scheme is adopted, which enhances the call processing capability of the bandwidth broker. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can result in lower flow blocking probability and higher resource utilization. And it also reduces the number of QoS state accesses/updates, thereby increasing the overall call processing capability of the bandwidth broker.

In this paper we present a system that is capable of estimating the position of a moving target on a grid plane covered by a pair of infrared transmitters. The area of this plane can be up to 15m2, further expandable if multiple transmitters are used. The position estimation method is based on comparing the number of infrared patterns received to the expected ones in a specific time interval (success rate). Using this method, no signal strength or time of flight has to be precisely measured, leading to an ultra low cost architecture. A proper topology of the infrared transmitters that optimally cover the desired area is discussed. The history of movements of the target is utilized in order to reject false estimations. The error achieved is below the half of the grid node distance.
