As the content of everyday news reports is unpredictable, keyword based news search engine can't provide effective services to audiences because the audiences may not be able to figure out proper keywords to search. In this paper, a novel framework is proposed to help audiences browse and retrieve news video clips without the need of keywords. Interesting keyframes and keywords are automatically extracted from news video clips and visually represented according to their interestingness and informativeness measurement. A computational approach is also developed to quantify the interestingness measurement of video clips. The keyframes and keywords are carefully organized so that the audiences can find news stories of interest at first glance.

In wireless ad hoe network environments, every link is wireless and every node is mobile. Those features make data lost easily as well as multicasting inefficient and unreliable. Moreover, Efficient and reliable multicast in wireless ad hoe network is a difficult issue. It is a major challenge to transmission delays and packet losses due to link changes of a multicast tree at the provision of high delivery ratio for each packet transmission in wireless ad hoe network environment. In this paler, we propose and evaluate Reliable Adaptive Multicast Protocol (RAMP) based on a relay node concept. Relay nodes are placed along the multieast tree. Data recovery is done between relay nodes. RAMP supports a reliable multicasting suitable for mobile ad hoe network by reducing the number of packet retransmissions. We compare RAMP with SRM (Scalable Reliable Multicast). Simulation results show that the RAMP has high delivery ratio and low end-to-end delay for packet transmsission.

Unstructured P2P has power-law link distribution, and the random walk in power-law networks is analyzed. The analysis results show that the probability that a random walker walks through the high degree nodes is high in the power-law network, and the information on the high degree nodes can be easily found through random walk. Random walk spread and random walk search method (RWSS) is proposed based on the analysis result. Simulation results show that RWSS achieves high success rates at low cost and is robust to high degree node failure.

Despite recent advances in wireless networking technology, real-time streaming of CD-quality digital audio remains a challenging topic. In this work, a set of applications following the server-client model was developed, facilitating the transmission and playback of PCM-coded audio over wireless links. The implementation is based on typical Personal computer (PC) platforms interconnected with off-the-shelf wireless networking hardware. Performance evaluation tests are presented under different networking parameters and link conditions, leading to an optimal set of parameters for high-quality wireless digital audio delivery.

In this paper we present the internal architecture and bidding mechanisms designed for Mertacor, a successful trading agent, which ended up first in the Classic Trading Agent Competition (TAC) of 2005. TAC provides a realistic benchmarking environment in which different trading agents compete with each other in order to best satisfy their clients' preferences and maximize their total profit. The "travel game" scenario of TAC involves three types of auctions;a) continuous one-sided that sell flight tickets, b) ascending multi-unit auctions for booking hotel rooms, and c) continuous double auctions for entertainment tickets. For each one of these types, we describe the techniques deployed by Mertacor. In flight auctions prices are updated according to a random walk process, thus the accurate prediction of the next update is not feasible. A key element of agent behavior in these auctions is its ability to accurately deduce the specific time in an auction, at which bidding will be profitable. In order to deal with the uncertainty due to price fluctuations in flight auctions and to provide our agent with an efficient decision mechanism, we have designed the z-heuristic framework. The goal of z-heuristic is to figure out when the price assumes its minimum value and recommend bidding at that moment. In the case of hotel auctions, Mertacor used fuzzy reasoning in conjunction with rule-based reasoning in order to predict the closing prices of hotel rooms, when historical data from past auctions are available. In order to bid efficiently in entertainment auctions, we have designed a bidding strategy whose goal is to preserve a pre-specified long-term profit. Collection of Taiwanese text corpus with phonetic transcription suffers from the problems of multiple pronunciation variation. By augmenting the text with speech, and using automatic speech recognition with a sausage searching net constructed from the multiple pronunciations of the text corresponding to its speech utterance, we are able to reduce the effort for phonetic transcription. By using the multiple pronunciation lexicon, the error rate of transcription 13.94% was achieved. Further improvement can be achieved by adapting the pronunciation lexicon with pronunciation variation (PV) rules derived from a manual corrected speech corpus. The PV rules can be categorized into two kinds: the knowledge-based and data-driven rules. By incorporating the PV rules, the error rate reduction 13.63% could be achieved. Although the technique was developed for Taiwanese speech, it could also be adapted easily to be applied in the other similar "minority" Chinese spoken languages.

This paper presents a mobile and portable stereo vision system designed for the assessment of road signage and delineation (lines and reflective pavement markers or "cat's eyes"). This novel system allows both geometric and photometric measurements to be made on objects in a scene. Any objects examined can then be accurately positioned on a National grid through the fusion of stereo vision with GPS technology. Automated feature extraction and analysis routines have also been developed to make the system fully autonomous.
