This paper presents a mobile and portable stereo vision system designed for the assessment of road signage and delineation (lines and reflective pavement markers or "cat's eyes"). This novel system allows both geometric and photometric measurements to be made on objects in a scene. Any objects examined can then be accurately positioned on a National grid through the fusion of stereo vision with GPS technology. Automated feature extraction and analysis routines have also been developed to make the system fully autonomous.

This paper describes the development of an end-to-end quality measurement method that allows us to quantify the perceived quality of Interactive Gaming, with an emphasis on the so-called First Person Shooter (FPS) game Quake IV. We conducted a number of subjective experiments to quantify the impact of network parameters on the perceived quality of this recent FPS game. Making use of a multi-dimensional regression analysis we developed the Quake IV G-model which enables us to predict a gamer's Quake IV quality rating (expressed in a Mean Opinion Score) based on measured ping and jitter values. Our G-model shows a very high correlation (R = 0.98) with the subjective data. Copyright 2006 ACM.

We present a detailed performance evaluation of a hybrid optical switching architecture called Overspill Routing in Optical Networks (ORION). The ORION architecture combines wavelength and (electronic) packet switching, so as to obtain the advantages of both switching paradigms. We have developed an extensive network simulator where the basic features of the ORION architecture were modeled, including suitable load-varying sources and edge/core node architectures. Various aspects of the ORION architecture were studied including the routing policies used (i.e. once ORION always ORION and lightpath reentry) and the various options available for the buffer architecture. The complete network study shows that ORION can absorb temporary traffic overloads, as intended, provided sufficient buffering is present.

We propose an image matching method based on cumulative distribution function (CDF). The CDF of the query and database images are approximated by piecewise linear models with two parameters, slope and intercept at various grayscale intervals. The equations solving the least squares line fitting algorithm are very simple to form, due to closed form expressions. The contiguous set of lines approximating the CDFs enables us to compare query and database images with corresponding estimated slopes and intercepts. As the dynamic range of CDF is from 0 to 1, images of different sizes can be compared. Approximation of CDFs with lines further reduces the dimension of the image features and thus improves the speed of matching. Also, the monotonically increasing CDF is well suited for approximations with lines. Resolving the CDF with lines of different lengths recasts the matching to a hierarchical methodology

In this paper we give an overview of the four TRECVID tasks submitted by COST292, European network of inst.tutions in the area of semantic multimodal analysis and retrieval of digital video media. Initially, we present shot boundary evaluation method based on results merged using a confidence measure. The two SB detectors user here are presented, one of the Technical University of Delft and one of the LaBRI, University of Bordeaux 1, followed by the description of the merging algorithm. The high-level feature extraction task comprises three separate systems. The first system, developed by the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) utilises a set of MPEG-7 low-level descriptors and Latent Semantic Analysis to detect the features. The second system, developed by Bilkent University, uses a Bayesian classifier trained with a "bag of subregions" for each keyframe. The third system by the Middle East Technical University (METU) exploits textual information in the video using character recognition methodology. The system submitted to the search task is an interactive retrieval application developed by Queen Mary, University of London, University of Zilina and ITI from Thessaloniki, combining basic retrieval functionalities in various modalities (i.e. visual, audio, textual) with a user interface supporting the submission of queries using any combination of the available retrieval tools and the accumulation of relevant retrieval results over all queries submitted by a single user during a specified time interval. Finally, the rushes task submission comprises a video summarisation and browsing system specifically designed to intuitively and efficiently presents rushes material in video production environment. This system is a result of joint work of University of Bristol, Technical University of Delft and LaBRI, University of Bordeaux 1.
