in this paper,we present a performance investigation of ATM LANs(Asynchronous Transfer Mode Local Area networks). Currently the research on input-queued ATM switches is one of the most active research fields. Many achievements have been made in the research on scheduling algorithms for unicast input-queued ATM switches and also applied in commerce. But the goal of the research on scheduling algorithms for multicast input-queued ATM switches only focuses on providing high throughput and inadvertently ignoring its undesired effects on QoS of the multicast traffic. In this paper we present a design scheme of input-queued ATM switches supporting multicast and corresponding scheduling algorithm, referred to as multicast longest normalized queue first (MLNQF). The MLNQF algorithm has the characteristics of improving throughput, satisfying QoS requirements and providing service fairly.

A new soft handoff analysis for hierarchical CDMA cellular systems is presented. We first develop an analytical method for studying the interference in hierarchical CDMA cellular systems. We then apply the obtained results to a soft handoff analysis model to study the performance of soft handoff in hierarchical architectures. It is observed that dynamic handoff parameter assignment, where parameters are dynamically adjusted according to given interference conditions, offers a more efficient handoff mechanism than fixed handoff parameter assignment.

Focuses on the utilization of alternative communication paths in local and system area networks with static routing. A lot of research work has been devoted to employing such paths for fault tolerance, but the issue of utilizing them for performance enhancement has been largely neglected, especially for static routing networks. This work formally proves that the throughput of multiple paths is maximal if the traffic is uniformly distributed over them. Based on this, a procedure for destination partitioning in static routing networks is introduced. It is applicable to arbitrary multi-path topologies and traffic patterns that lend themselves to partitioning. The procedure is applied to several topologies with different degree of equivalent paths coverage and their performance is evaluated through simulations. The results demonstrate that the network performance is significantly improved when the proposed partitioning procedure is applied.

Next generation wireless communication systems are expected to satisfy quality of service (QoS) requirements by preventing call droppings which are caused by user mobility. Call admission control (CAC) is becoming more important in guaranteeing the QoS of calls. Since existing CAC schemes estimate future requirements and reserve bandwidth to guarantee a certain level of QoS, the bandwidth estimation method is very important in CAC schemes. Most conventional schemes use the movement information of individual mobile terminals (MTs) to estimate the bandwidth requirements. While these schemes estimate the future bandwidth usage relatively well, it requires a high computational overhead and lots of memory space to keep and update the movement information of each mobile terminal, and therefore is hard to implement. We propose a call admission control scheme, which estimates the future handoffs using the handoff histories between BSs and the MT conformity. The proposed scheme achieves a low dropping ratio and high bandwidth utilization keeping a low computational overhead. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated through simulations.
