Focuses on the utilization of alternative communication paths in local and system area networks with static routing. A lot of research work has been devoted to employing such paths for fault tolerance, but the issue of utilizing them for performance enhancement has been largely neglected, especially for static routing networks. This work formally proves that the throughput of multiple paths is maximal if the traffic is uniformly distributed over them. Based on this, a procedure for destination partitioning in static routing networks is introduced. It is applicable to arbitrary multi-path topologies and traffic patterns that lend themselves to partitioning. The procedure is applied to several topologies with different degree of equivalent paths coverage and their performance is evaluated through simulations. The results demonstrate that the network performance is significantly improved when the proposed partitioning procedure is applied.

Next generation wireless communication systems are expected to satisfy quality of service (QoS) requirements by preventing call droppings which are caused by user mobility. Call admission control (CAC) is becoming more important in guaranteeing the QoS of calls. Since existing CAC schemes estimate future requirements and reserve bandwidth to guarantee a certain level of QoS, the bandwidth estimation method is very important in CAC schemes. Most conventional schemes use the movement information of individual mobile terminals (MTs) to estimate the bandwidth requirements. While these schemes estimate the future bandwidth usage relatively well, it requires a high computational overhead and lots of memory space to keep and update the movement information of each mobile terminal, and therefore is hard to implement. We propose a call admission control scheme, which estimates the future handoffs using the handoff histories between BSs and the MT conformity. The proposed scheme achieves a low dropping ratio and high bandwidth utilization keeping a low computational overhead. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated through simulations.

As the system size of Beowulf-Class cluster system scales up, system administration becomes challenging due to the increased complexity of the system. The lack of powerful tools for the administrative tasks even makes the matter worse. This paper presents a proposed framework for system management of large Beowulf cluster that divided the management task into well defined layers of service. A cluster management tool called SCMS (SMILE Cluster Management System) has been developed according to this framework. SCMS provides a rich set of services and tools for large cluster administration. The current implementation of SCMS is discussed referenced to the proposed framework. The software is now freely available on the Internet.

We consider SIR and rate control algorithms for data users on the CDMA forward link under constraints on delay (i.e., limited allowable retransmissions), data error rate and total power. The QoS for data users is mapped onto a family of utility functions that reflect the tradeoff between total system throughput and fairness (similarity in data rates of users). The proposed algorithm uses an hierarchical control structure that is simple to implement in a distributed manner. Specifically, the data rates are adjusted jointly by the base station while the SIR targets are adjusted by the mobiles using information specific to the individual users.

We discuss dynamic binary transmit power control strategies for a mobile data user, taking into consideration channel dynamics, residual battery energy and communication delay constraints. We define a utility function for the mobile that takes into account communication throughput, energy consumption as well as delay. A dynamic programming algorithm is employed to maximize the user's utility, by which we obtain optimal transmission policies for different scenarios. The resulting transmitter power policies can be implemented using signal strength measurements and knowledge of residual battery energy.
