While CORBA provides an infrastructure which allows objects to communicate, independent of the specific techniques, languages, and platforms used to implement the objects, it is not yet suited for real-time applications since CORBA lacks essential quality-of-service (QoS) features. Current work on real-time CORBA includes an off-line scheduled, hard, real-time system based on rate-monotonic scheduling and an on-line scheduled, best-effort, real-time system based on the earliest-deadline-first algorithm. The former provides QoS guarantees at the expense of run-time scheduling flexibility while the latter provides the complement. We propose an approach which provides the advantages of both, that is, QoS guarantees and run-time scheduling flexibility.

Once mobile nodes move into another network, Mobile IP is employed for the remaining unicast services. However, multicast services become unavailable because of topology changes. A multicast scheme is proposed based on our Domain-based Mobile IP (K.D. Wu et al., 1998). Multicast services are divided into two types: Intra-domain service and Inter-domain service. The article identifies mobile nodes joining the Internet where they can acquire benefits of multicasting and its potential values, as for stationary nodes it does not matter they are at Home network or Foreign network. Finally the comparison of multicast delivery schemes for the mobile environment is presented.

The location estimation of mobile telephones is of great current interest. The two sources of range measurement errors in geolocation techniques are measuring error and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) error. The NLOS errors, derived from the blocking of direct paths, have been considered as a killer issue in the location estimation. In this paper we develop an algorithm to mitigate the NLOS errors in location estimation when the range measurements corrupted by NLOS errors are not identifiable. This algorithm, referred to as the residual weighting algorithm (Rwgh), assumes that the number of range measurements is greater than the minimum number required. The Rwgh algorithm is compared with two other generic algorithms and tested under various scenarios and NLOS error models, which includes deterministic and random NLOS error models. In both cases, Rwgh has shown the effectiveness of NLOS error mitigation in location estimation.

We analyze the convergence behavior of the CRLS-SA algorithm for inverse filtering. The CRLS-SA is a cascade adaptive filter based on the RLS algorithm, with each section adapted independently based on global minimization. The subsection adaptation results in reduced computational complexity. The rate of convergence is evaluated based on the convergence time constant defined as the ratio of condition number and sensitivity. The smaller the convergence time constant, the faster the structure converges. Analysis and simulation explain and show that CRLS-SA exhibits faster convergence than the direct form RLS adaptive filter for speech type signals.

HiPPI-6400, a high-performance parallel interface running at 6400 Mb/s (800 MB/s), is a networking technology targeted for deployment in a local-area network (LAN) or system-area network (SAN). It is a low-latency, high-bandwidth switch that has the added features of providing flow control and error detection and retransmission in hardware, thus freeing network software from having to implement these functions. Due to the very low overhead of the HiPPI-6400 physical layer and the use of separate control lines, user data rates of HiPPI-6400 are literally 6400 Mb/s or 6.4 Gb/s (eight times the usable bandwidth of Gigabit Ethernet) with an achievable bit-error rate of less than 10/sup 25/. An initial 32-port HiPPI-6400 prototype, running an OS-bypass network protocol called ST between two 32-node SGI Origin 2000s, produced one-way latencies of 7 /spl mu/s and sustained data rates of 3.6 Gb/s (unidirectional) and 6.4 Gb/s (bidirectional). The HiPPI-6400 bandwidth in both cases was limited by the memory architecture of the SGI Origin 2000, not by the network. When running an OS-based protocol such as TCP, the unidirectional bandwidth was 2.2 Gb/s.

Ring cavity lasers employ an Er doped or a semiconductor gain medium including a wavelength selective element for tuning a lasing wavelength. For a wavelength tuner, a tunable optical filter can be realized using a rotatable grating, Fabry-Perot cavity or an acousto-optic element. In the paper, we demonstrate the fiber ring laser tuned by controlling polarization states along the birefringent optical fiber loop. The ring laser consists of a semiconductor optical amplifier, a polarization controller combined with a rotatable intra-cavity polarizer for a wavelength selective element, and a 9:1 coupler. The ring also includes a polarization independent in-line optical isolator for providing unidirectional operation and an attenuator to adjust a loop loss.

network management systems which administer actual network resources are developed based on a software system called network management platforms. network management platforms provide major functions defined in TMN and interfaces to develop network management systems. Our research designs and implements a network management platform suitable to the TMN environment of today and tomorrow. This platform increases the efficiency in handling management information by completely separating managed object class information from instance information. In addition, the performance of the platform is significantly improved through a multi-structured management information tree (MIT) and a multi-staged arrangement of the execution of common management information services (CMIS). Furthermore, our platform allows a new management information base (MIB) to be added to the managed system in run-time, solving the problem of having to recompile and restart the network management system. In our research, we develop a new concept of class level filtering, which yields relatively high performance as the MIT becomes larger.

We propose the adaptive cascade recursive least squares (CRLS-SA) algorithm for the estimation of linear prediction, or AR model, coefficients. The CRLS-SA algorithm features low computational complexity since each section is adapted independently from the other sections. It is shown that the CRLS-SA algorithm can yield AR coefficient estimates closer to the true values, for some known signals, than the widely used autocorrelation method. The CRLS-SA converges faster to the true values of the model, which is critically important for estimation from short data records. While the computational effort of CRLS-SA is a factor of 3 to 4 higher than that for the autocorrelation method, the improvement in performance yields a viable alternative for a number of applications. © 1998 IEEE.

In current IS-95 systems, forward link power control is far less powerful than reverse link power control and in some cases, it results in the downlink capacity being more limited than the reverse link. This paper analyzes different algorithms and provides insight into the dynamics of downlink power control. An improved forward link power control approach based on the current one bit per frame feedback is suggested. This algorithm consists of three parts. First, the current mobile frame error rate is estimated based on the history of mobile feedbacks. The next two parts are linearization and a linear system controller. Simulation shows that, compared to a bang-bang control scheme, this algorithm can achieve the same frame error rate for a stationary channel with lower mean power. It also has good transient response for time varying channels. It can provide a good tradeoff between the steady state performance and dynamic response. Thus, the paper presents an algorithm to improve the current IS-95 forward link power control but in a more general sense, it presents a systematic approach to the designing of a power control unit.

This paper proposes an approach to support integrated services Internet with RSVP over ATM shortcuts (ISAC). While similar to other LP switching approaches, our work is different in three major aspects. First, it focuses on supporting the integrated services model whereas other approaches currently support only best effort traffic. Second, our architecture adopts RSVP as the major signaling protocol and eliminates duplication of functionality in the ATM domain. Finally, while heterogeneous multicast has not yet been supported in any other approaches, it is considered in our proposal. Our design strives to achieve three fundamental objectives: (1) ensuring compatibility with existing networking standards, applications and system software, (2) maintaining data path efficiency, and (3) assuring portability for different operating system and switch control protocol. Our proposed architecture has been proven by a prototype implementation. Its operation has been verified by demonstrating a videoconferencing application. Our prototype has also been evaluated by measuring its signaling and control latency as well as the transfer delay of the data path.
