This paper presents a first solution to the problem of adaptive LQR for continuous-time linear periodic systems. Specifically, reinforcement learning and adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) techniques are used to develop two algorithms to obtain near-optimal controllers. Firstly, the policy iteration (PI) and value iteration (VI) methods are proposed when the model is known. Then, PI-based and VI-based off-policy ADP algorithms are derived to find near-optimal solutions directly from input/state data collected along the system trajectories, without the exact knowledge of system dynamics. The effectiveness of the derived algorithms is validated using the well-known lossy Mathieu equation.

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in IoT networks can provide an efficient means of collecting mission-critical data. However, ensuring the freshness of collected data is a significant challenge due to the stochastic status updates of sensor nodes (SN s), In this paper, we delve into the issue of timely data collection aided by a UAV in IoT networks, where the UAV collects status updates from SNs and offloads the data to the data center at an opportune location. SNs sample information from their surroundings at stochastic intervals to generate new status updates. To minimize the average total age of information (AoI), we describe the problem as a Markov decision process and propose a compound-action deep reinforcement learning (CADRL) approach to jointly optimize the trajectory, scheduling of SNs, offloading strategy, and offloading power of the UAV, which can handle both continuous and discrete actions of the UAV. Simulation results indicate that our algorithm effectively reduces the AoI when contrasted with baseline methods. © 2023 IEEE.

The quality of monitoring accomplished by wireless sensor networks (WSNs) mainly depends on the service of coverage provided by the deployed sensors. In particular, redundant coverage is essential to several applications, where an event is simultaneously detected by multiple sensors. While several protocols have been proposed for two-dimensional (2D) space, little work has been focused on three-dimensional (3D) space although it is more accurate for the design of sensing applications. In this paper, we consider the problem of k-coverage in 3D WSNs, where each point is covered by at least k sensors. Specifically, we propose to use Helly's Theorem and the Reuleaux tetrahedron model for characterizing k-coverage of a 3D deployment field. This leads to develop a placement strategy of sensors to fully k-cover a 3D field. Then, we design an energy-efficient sensor selection protocol for 3D k-covered WSNs to extend the network lifetime. We corroborate our analysis with various simulation results.

Complex structural variants(CSVs) are genomic alterations that have more than two breakpoints and are considered as the simultaneous occurrence of simple structural ***,detecting the compounded mutational signals of CSVs is challenging through a commonly used model-match *** a result,there has been limited progress for CSV discovery compared with simple structural ***,we systematically analyzed the multi-breakpoint connection feature of CSVs,and proposed Mako,utilizing a bottom-up guided model-free strategy,to detect CSVs from paired-end short-read ***,we implemented a graph-based pattern growth approach,where the graph depicts potential breakpoint connections,and pattern growth enables CSV detection without pre-defined *** evaluations on both simulated and real datasets revealed that Mako outperformed other ***,validation rates of CSVs on real data based on experimental and computational validations as well as manual inspections are around 70%,where the medians of experimental and computational breakpoint shift are 13 bp and 26 bp,***,the Mako CSV subgraph effectively characterized the breakpoint connections of a CSV event and uncovered a total of 15 CSV types,including two novel types of adjacent segment swap and tandem dispersed *** analysis of these CSVs also revealed the impact of sequence homology on the formation of *** is publicly available at https://***/xjtu-omics/Mako.

An approach to system-level modeling and simulation of a class of heterogeneous real-time systems the timing behaviour of which can be modeled by deterministic discrete event systems is described. Examples of systems we consider are self-timed systems, synchronously clocked systems, and mixed asynchronous/synchronous systems. Our model is based on several extensions to the model of timed marked graphs. Basically, we augment this model by adding new schedule constraints such that we can express simultaneity, synchronicity, finite buffering as well as arbitrary combinations of min- and max-constraints. We prove that these extensions allow efficient timing analysis and we show how to simulate realistic systems using the Ptolemy design system.

Hybrid wireless networks are networks that are composed of both ad hoc transmissions and cellular transmissions. Many existing works have analyzed the capacity of hybrid wireless networks. By assuming the uniform traffic model that a source node would select a random node as the destination, the network capacity is a function of number of nodes and number of base stations. Nevertheless, the real network traffic pattern is related to the social behaviors of users. In this work, we study the capacity of hybrid wireless networks with the social traffic model under the L-maximum-hop routing policy. If two nodes are within L hops away, packets will be transmitted in the ad hoc mode; otherwise, packets are transmitted through the base stations. To our best knowledge, we are the first to study this problem and develop the capacity as a function of number of nodes, number of stations, traffic model parameters, and L.

High output gain ratio demand for DC-DC converters have been increasing in recent years due to diverse integration of various renewable sources and industrial applications. This article focused to provide a detailed analysis of a Cuk converter with increased voltage conversion ratio. The circuit only consists of two inductors, five capacitors and four diodes. In particular, configuration is composed of combination of two different cascaded switched capacitor voltage boost network. The voltage in the output is 29 times higher than the input voltage, if 0.9 duty ratio is used. Further, high gain DC-DC converter control is a challenging task due to higher order and nonlinear characteristics. Standard PI controllers cannot accomplish robust operation for all operation regions. Hence, Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) is a reliable and robust method for high order nonlinear systems due to its robustness and independence from system dynamics and parameter variations. Furthermore, this paper develops a constant switching frequency SMC approach to high gain modified Cuk converter. Comprehensive theoretical analysis is presented and numerically verified using Matlab/Simulink software. © 2019 IEEE.

Diffusion-based communication refers to the transfer of information using molecules as message carriers whose propagation is based on the law of molecular diffusion. Path loss can have a major impact on the link quality in molecular communication as the signal strength is shown inversely proportional to the cube of the communication distance. In this paper, various diversity techniques for Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) transmissions based on molecular diffusion are proposed to improve the communication performance in nanonetworks in the presence of Multi-User Interference (MUI). Analogous to radio communication, the concept of diversity and Spatial Multiplexing (SM) can be successfully applied in molecular communication. To the best of our knowledge, our paper is the first which investigates the aspects of MIMO transmissions for molecular communication. Numerical results show that the proposed diversity techniques can successfully lower the error rate. Further performance improvement can be obtained by properly allocating molecules among the transmission nodes if the Channel State Information (CSI) is available at the transmitter end. To optimize the system throughput, a dynamic switching mechanism between the diversity mode and the Spatial Multiplexing (SM) mode can be employed.

This paper studies the distributed feedback optimization problem for linear multi-agent systems without precise knowledge of local costs and agent dynamics. The proposed solution is based on a hierarchical approach that uses upper-level coordinators to adjust reference signals toward the global optimum and lower-level controllers to regulate agents’ outputs toward the reference signals. In the absence of precise information on local gradients and agent dynamics, an extremum-seeking mechanism is used to enforce a gradient descent optimization strategy, and an adaptive dynamic programming approach is taken to synthesize an internal-model-based optimal tracking controller. The whole procedure relies only on measurements of local costs and input-state data along agents’ trajectories. Moreover, under appropriate conditions, the closed-loop signals are bounded and the output of the agents exponentially converges to a small neighborhood of the desired extremum. A numerical example is conducted to validate the efficacy of the proposed method.
