Since biometric data are unique and permanent characteristics of individuals, the privacy protection of biometric authentication schemes has become a common concern of the public. Recently, Tang et al. proposed a biometric-based authentication scheme in an attempt to solve the privacy concerns. However, their scheme cannot resist the attack of tamper. Motivated by these concerns, in this paper, we proposed a new biometric-based authentication scheme, which achieves identity privacy and transaction untraceability.. Its security is based on the semantic security of the ElGamal algorithm. Analysis results show that our scheme is higher in efficiency than Tang et al. scheme does, and meanwhile, it can resist the tamper attack. It is concluded that the proposed scheme is more secure and more practical than the existing ones.

The internal link loss characteristic inference has become an increasingly important issue for operating and evaluating a wireless sensor network. Due to the inherent stringent bandwidth and energy constraints of sensors, it is usually impractical to directly monitor each node or link in wireless sensor network. We consider the problem of inferring the internal link loss characteristics from passive end-to-end measurement in this paper. Specifically, the link loss performance inference during the data aggregation is considered. Under the assumptions that the link losses are mutually independent, we elaborate a bias corrected link loss Cumulant Generating Function (CGF) algorithm. The simulation results show that the internal link loss CGF can be inferred accurately comparable to the sampled internal link loss CGF. At the end of this paper, we apply the result of internal link loss CGF inference to identify the lossy link in sensor network.

It is crucial to deploy temporary non-terrestrial networks (NTN) in disaster situations where terrestrial networks are no longer operable. Deploying uncrewed aerial vehicle base stations (UAV-BSs) can provide a radio access network (RAN); however, the backhaul link may also be damaged and unserviceable in such disaster conditions. In this regard, high-altitude platform stations (HAPS) spark attention as they can be deployed as super macro base stations (SMBS) and data centers. Therefore, in this study, we investigate a three-layer heterogeneous network with different topologies to prolong the lifespan of the temporary network by using UAV-BSs for RAN services and HAPS-SMBS as a backhaul. Furthermore, a two-layer clustering algorithm is proposed to handle the UAV-BS ad-hoc networking effectively.

A reliable synchrophasor network of phasor measurement units (PMUs) is essential for modern power system operations and management with rapidly increasing levels of renewable energy sources. Cyber-physical system vulnerabilities such as side-channel based denial of service (DoS) attacks can compromise PMU communications even when using an encrypted virtual private network. To overcome these vulnerabilities, countermeasures to DoS attacks needs to be developed. One such countermeasure is the development and deployment of a virtual synchrophasor network (VSN) to improve the reliability of a synchrophasor network to DoS attacks. A cellular computational networks (CCN) is a distributed artificial intelligence framework suitable for complex system modeling and estimation. CCNs have been proved to mitigate the effects of DoS attacks on single PMUs successfully. In this study, the robustness of a VSN is further investigated and proven to exhibit resiliency under concurrent DoS attacks. Typical results for VSN applications in multi-area power systems with utility-scale photovoltaic solar plants are presented.

Sensor deployment, and in particular coverage, is a fundamental component in the design and development of wireless sensor networks. Achieving coverage (or 1-coverage) in three-dimensional (or spatial) wireless sensor networks (WSNs), which requires that every point in a spatial field of interest (FoI), is an open challenging problem. In particular, the problem of k-coverage in spatial WSNs, where every point in a spatial FoI is k-covered (or covered by at least k sensors at the same time), is even more challenging. In this paper, we investigate the problem of connected k-coverage in spatial WSNs, where a spatial FoI is k-covered while all the sensors participating in this k-coverage process are connected to each other. Our study aims at producing an energy-efficient and optimized protocol, which helps achieve connected k-coverage in spatial WSNs with a minimum number of sensors, thus, extending the network lifespan. Precisely, this study is based on convex polyhedral space fillers that help establish an irregular hexagonal prism tessellation referred to as Irregular Honeycomb Network (IHN), which serves as a medium to achieve k-coverage in spatial WSNs. First, we propose a randomly distributed sensor placement strategy, which is designed to guarantee full k-coverage of a spatial FoI. To this end, we tile a spatial FoI with irregular hexagonal prisms, known as space fillers, which are adjacent to each other without any gaps or overlaps. Second, we exploit this tiling strategy to guarantee k-coverage of a spatial FoI. Then, we compute the spatial sensor density (i.e., number of sensors per unit volume) to k-cover a spatial FoI. Third, we determine the necessary relationship between the sensors’ communication and sensing ranges to ensure network connectivity. We corroborate our analysis with various simulation results.

Located in the stratospheric layer of Earth's atmosphere, high altitude platform station (HAPS) is a promising network infrastructure, which can bring significant advantages to sixth-generation (6G) and beyond wireless communications systems by forming vertical heterogeneous networks (vHetNets). However, if not dealt with properly, integrated networks suffer from several performance challenges compared to standalone networks. In harmonized spectrum integrated networks, where different tiers share the same frequency spectrum, interference is an important challenge to be addressed. This work focuses on an integrated HAPS-terrestrial network, serving users in an overlapped urban geographic area, and formulates a fairness optimization problem, aiming to maximize the minimum spectral efficiency (SE) of the network. Due to the highly nonconvex nature of the formulated problem, we develop a rapid converging iterative algorithm that designs the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) beamforming weights and the user association scheme such that the propagated inter- and intra-tier interference is managed. Simulation results demonstrate the proposed algorithm's superiority over standalone terrestrial networks and scenario where only the beamforming weights are optimized. © 2023, CC0.

This paper develops a two-step procedure for commercial buildings to optimize the frequency regulation service provision by leveraging the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Both day-ahead and realtime operations of the HVAC system are simulated by using a typical commercial building's model, the PJM market prices, and dynamic regulation signals. The simulation results show that it is beneficial for buildings to provide dynamic regulation services where the capacity reserved for regulation up and down are the same. The mean reverting characteristic of the dynamic regulation signal enables commercial buildings to increase regulation capacity with minimal impact on the comfort level of occupants. The proposed frequency regulation provisioning scheme yields a high performance score (>0.9). The simulation results also reveal that there exists a trade-off between frequency regulation performance and climate control performance of the building. Finally, the economic benefits of frequency regulation provisions of commercial buildings are analyzed.

In this paper, we focus on the problem of connected k-coverage in planar wireless sensor networks (PWSNs), where every point in a field of interest (FoI) is covered by at least $k$ sensors simultaneously, while all the participating sensors are mutually connected, where k > 1. To this end, we develop a global framework using a square tessellation that considers both deterministic and stochastic sensing models. Initially, we tessellate a planar FoI into adjacent and congruent square tiles. In each tile of this tessellation, we construct a cusp-square area for sensor placement to achieve k-coverage. Based on this cusp-squared square tile configuration, we compute the minimum sensor density that is required for deterministic and stochastic k-coverage in PWSNs. Then, we establish the necessary relationship that should exist between the sensing and communication ranges of the sensors to maintain network connectivity in k-covered PWSNs. Finally, we propose our stochastic k-coverage protocol for sensor scheduling and substantiate our theoretical analysis with simulation results.

Exploring the 6G Potentials: Immersive, Hyper Reliable, and Low-Latency Communication

The transition towards the sixth-generation (6G) wireless telecommunications networks introduces significant challenges for researchers and industry stakeholders. The 6G technology aims to enhance existing usage scenarios through supporting innovative applications that require stringent key performance indicators (KPIs). In some critical use cases of 6G, multiple KPIs, including immersive throughput, with an envisioned peak data rate of 1 Tbps, hyper-reliability, in the range of 10−5 to 10−7, and hyper low-latency, between 0.1 and 1 ms, must be achieved simultaneously to deliver the expected service experience. However, this is challenging due to the conflicting nature of these KPIs. This article proposes a new service class of 6G as immersive, hyper reliable, and low-latency communication (IHRLLC), and introduces a potential network architecture to achieve the associated KPIs. Specifically, enhanced technologies, such as ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (umMIMO)-aided terahertz (THz) communications, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), and non-terrestrial networks (NTN), are viewed as the key enablers for achieving immersive data rates and hyper reliability. Given the computational complexity involved in employing these technologies, we propose mathematical and computational enabling technologies, such as learn-to-optimize (L2O), generative-AI (GenAI), quantum computing, and network digital twin (NDT), to complement the proposed architecture and optimize the latency. © 2024, CC0.
