The aim of this work was to develop a procedure that allows prosodic modifications of speech signals without impairing the quality. The developed procedure is based on the Fourier analysis/synthesis technique with several improvements on the analysis side, such as the analysis of signals with rapidly changing F-0 and the analysis of weak spectral components. Also for the modification of the short-time spectrum and for the reconstruction of the speech signal some new methods have been introduced. The most important one, in terms of speech quality, is the way of phase compensation that limits the absolute time shift to half the pitch period. The developed procedure is used in our high-quality text-to-speech synthesis system that is based on concatenation of prosodically modified diphones.

In this paper, we introduce a novel reinforcement learning(RL) scheme for linear continuous-time dynamical systems. Different from traditional batch learning algorithms,an incremental learning approach is developed, which provides a more efficient way to tackle the on-line learning problem in realworld applications. We provide concrete convergence and robust analysis on this incremental-learning algorithm. An extension to solving robust optimal control problems is also given. Two simulation examples are also given to illustrate the effectiveness of our theoretical result.

We propose a novel wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) to simultaneously transmit unicast data and multicast services with upstream data re-modulation in optical network units (ONUs). For each wavelength channel in the optical line terminal (OLT), the downstream unicast data are applied to one arm of a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) to generate baseband unicast non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal. A radio frequency (RF) control signal is applied to the other arm to present two un-modulated sidebands for multicast data modulation in a differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) format. The flexible and dynamic multicast services are realized by simply switching the RF control signal on or off. The proposed scheme is experimentally demonstrated with 1.25-Gb/s downstream unicast, multicast, and upstream data.

We analyze push and pull for data collection in wireless sensor networks. Most applications to date use the traditional push approach, where nodes transmit sensed data immediately to the sink. Using a pull approach, nodes store the data in their local flash memory, and only engage in communication during dedicated collection phases. We show how one can transform an existing push-based collection protocol into a pull-based one, and compare the power consumption of both approaches on a 35-node testbed. Our results show that substantial energy gains are possible with pull, provided that the application can tolerate a long latency. Copyright 2010 ACM.

We investigate to what extent flooding and routing is possible if the graph is allowed to change unpredictably at each time step. We study what minimal requirements are necessary so that a node may correctly flood or route a message in a network whose links may change arbitrarily at any given point, subject to the condition that the underlying graph is connected. We look at algorithmic constraints such as limited storage, no knowledge of an upper bound on the number of nodes, and no usage of identifiers. When we use multicast services it? heterogeneous networks such that the wired networks and the wireless ad hoc networks are combined, it is inefficient to apply the wired overlay multicast protocol to wireless ad hoc network and vice versa, due to existence of mobility and the limitation of bandwidth, power and etc. With our best knowledge, several multicast gateways have been studied in order to integrate multicast between heterogeneous networks. Existing multicast gateways need protocol translations when a node wants to join for multicast group which is in different environmental networks. However, deploying translation functions to existing gateway causes another deployment problem. In this paper, we propose two cases to place a translation function. It can be located in wireless ad hoc nodes, wired end nodes with Rendezvous Point. We discuss and compare to each case and problem occurred, and analyze using performance metrics such as control overhead, join latency and stretch The control overhead is calculated by number of control messages. The more control messages are required when the translation function is in the wireless ad hoc network. The join latency is shorter when the translation function is in the wired network. Also, the stretch is better when the wireless nodes have translation function.
