This paper gives an overview of the work carried out during the course of the COST-266 action on circuit/wavelength switched network studies. Several subjects are discussed in detail in this paper. A first important topic deals with the different control plane models in single- and multidomain networks. A second important issue is the routing and wavelength assignment problem, both in networks with static and dynamic traffic demands. Also the IP-over-OTN network architecture, envisaged to be the network architecture most suited for future transport networks, is discussed. Finally the study on optical virtual private networks is presented.

Based on El Gamal homomorphic encryption, a protocol of secure multi-party multi-data ranking problem was proposed. The problem extended millionaires' problem. Furthermore, the correctness and security of this protocol were shown in semi-honest model, using the definition of secure multi-party computation. The solution of secure multi-party multi-data ranking problem can form a fundamental basis of new-style electronic transaction, such as private biding and auction, secret online transaction and so on.

A class of artificial neural networks with a two-layer feedback topology to solve nonlinear discrete dynamic optimization problems is developed. Generalized recurrent neuron models are introduced. A direct method to assign the weights of neural networks is presented. The method is based on Bellmann's Optimality Principle and on the interchange of information which occurs during the synaptic chemical processing among neurons. A comparative analysis of the computational requirements is made. The analysis shows advantages of this approach as compared to the standard dynamic programming algorithm. The technique has been applied to several important optimization problems, such as shortest path and control optimal problems.

The ever increasing wireless data services, such as imaging, video, audio, multimedia, etc., have demands for the very high speed wireless communications and network, which are unfortunately a bottleneck when combining with the wireline core network. Users' are now expecting high quality of experience with low-cost devices, ubiquitous connectivity, energy efficiency, high reliability, or even ultra-low latency if a vehicle terminal is applied.
