SugarMate: Non-intrusive blood glucose monitoring with smartphones

Inferring abnormal glucose events such as hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia is crucial for the health of both diabetic patients and non-diabetic people. However, regular blood glucose monitoring can be invasive and inconvenient in everyday life. We present SugarMate, a first smartphone-based blood glucose inference system as a temporary alternative to continuous blood glucose monitors (CGM) when they are uncomfortable or inconvenient to wear. In addition to the records of food, drug and insulin intake, it leverages smartphone sensors to measure physical activities and sleep quality automatically. Provided with the imbalanced and often limited measurements, a challenge of SugarMate is the inference of blood glucose levels at a fine-grained time resolution. We propose Md3RNN, an efficient learning paradigm to make full use of the available blood glucose information. Specifically, the newly designed grouped input layers, together with the adoption of a deep RNN model, offer an opportunity to build blood glucose models for the general public based on limited personal measurements from single-user and grouped-users perspectives. Evaluations on 112 users demonstrate that Md3RNN yields an average accuracy of 82.14%, significantly outperforming previous learning methods those are either shallow, generically structured, or oblivious to grouped behaviors. Also, a user study with the 112 participants shows that SugarMate is acceptable for practical usage. © 2017 ACM.

Towards optimal power control via ensembling deep neural networks

A deep neural network (DNN) based power control method is proposed, which aims at solving the non-convex optimization problem of maximizing the sum rate of a fading multi-user interference channel. Towards this end, we first present PCNet, which is a multi-layer fully connected neural network that is specifically designed for the power control problem. A key challenge in training a DNN for the power control problem is the lack of ground truth, i.e., the optimal power allocation is unknown. To address this issue, PCNet leverages the unsupervised learning strategy and directly maximizes the sum rate in the training phase. We then present PCNet+, which enhances the generalization capacity of PCNet by incorporating noise power as an input to the network. Observing that a single PCNet(+) does not universally outperform the existing solutions, we further propose ePCNet(+), a network ensemble with multiple PCNets(+) trained independently. Simulation results show that for the standard symmetric K-user Gaussian interference channel, the proposed methods can outperform all state-of-the-art power control solutions under a variety of system configurations. Furthermore, the performance improvement of ePCNet comes with a reduced computational complexity. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A wideband tunable optoelectronic oscillator （OEO） based on a tunable single-bandpass microwave photonic filter （MPF） and a recirculating delay line is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The MPF is formed by cascading a finite impulse response filter and an infinite impulse response filter, which can enhance the quality factor of the MPF and suppress the side modes of the OEO. The frequency response of the tunable MPF is theoretically analyzed. By placing the MPF into the OEO, tunable microwave signals from 10.3 GHz to 26.7 GHz and a 100 MHz step tunability are experimentally demonstrated. The phase noise is -113 dBc/Hz@10 kHz. The results agree well with the theory.

In data center networks, flows with different objectives coexist and compete for limited resources. From the application-level perspective, it is hard to satisfy the demands of different flows without effective resource planning. To address the bandwidth allocation problem under multi-objective scenarios, we study a multi-objective network utility maximization (NUM) problem and propose our practical bandwidth allocation framework HOMMO, which consists of an upper layer algorithm (ULA) and a lower layer algorithm (LLA). This hierarchical design helps to strike a balance between accuracy and efficiency. Implemented in network switches, ULA is an online learning-based scheme that allocates bandwidth for aggregated flows with different performances objectives. Taking the outputs from ULA as capacity constraints, LLA acts as a fast scheduling method at packet-level. We extend NUMFabric by implementing the design of isolate queues and corresponding dequeue strategy in switches and make it a feasible solution of the LLA. Therefore, HOMMO achieves satisfactory isolation across flows with different objectives, which is equivalent to provide a network slicing solution. To evaluate the proposed framework, we implement it in ns-3 and verify the performance under various scenarios. The simulation results show that HOMMO not only quickly converges to a near-optimal solution of the multi-objective NUM problem but also guarantees a Pareto-optimal solution. Moreover, it outperforms the well-known transport protocol (i.e., DCTCP) with 2x increase on average bandwidth utilization and 1.96x improvement in global network utility at the aggregated flow level.

This paper provides a route maintenance method for marine mobile sensor networks (MMSN) to monitor the marine surface environment. The two-layer collection network on the marine surface is firstly constructed, in which sensor nodes send small-scale data to the collection head (CH) node for storage by multi-hop route. The CHs upload data to nearby UAV, which help to save network energy while expanding network coverage. Secondly, the broadcast mode of the Ring Broadcast message can effectively guide search direction of the sensor node routing. Meanwhile the inner-collection nodes select the optimal next-hop node by the fitness function, which helps to balance the energy consumption of each node and search optimal path. Lastly, dynamic routing mechanism in complex environment can quickly search the alternative path to repair route, and thus adapt to the frequent change of MMSN topology. In this paper, the dynamic transmission of UAV mobility and collection network structure are used to realize the high-efficiency transmission of maritime monitoring data, which can effectively improve the network hole problem in harsh maritime environment. © 2018 IEEE.

—Driven by the increasingly serious air pollution problem, the monitoring of air quality has gained much attention in both theoretical studies and practical implementations. In this paper, we present the architecture, implementation and optimization of our own air quality sensing system, which provides real-time and fine-grained air quality map of the monitored area. As the major component, the optimization problem of our system is studied in detail. Our objective is to minimize the average joint error of the established real-time air quality map, which involves data inference for the unmeasured data values. A deep Q-learning solution has been proposed for the power control problem to reasonably plan the sensing tasks of the power-limited sensing devices online. A genetic algorithm has been designed for the location selection problem to efficiently find the suitable locations to deploy limited number of sensing devices. The performance of the proposed solutions are evaluated by simulations, showing a significant performance gain when adopting both strategies. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.
