Servers have been proposed to implement resource reservations on shared resources. Such reservations isolate the temporal behavior of tasks sharing the shared resources, thereby providing performance guarantees to tasks independent of other tasks. In existing work, resource reservation has been synonymous to utilization (also called bandwidth) on the resource, i.e., we can reserve only a constant fraction of the resource utilization via a server. Such reservation schemes are not suited to serve interrupt-like tasks: tasks that occur seldom but require quick service or tasks with jitter. With this motivation, we present a generalized server algorithm, called Demand Bound Server (DBS), whose offered service is characterized by the demand bound function (dbf) of the task it serves. We show that schedulability of DBS tightly follows that of EDF, and if schedulable a DBS provides a performance guarantee as requested by the dbf of the task. We present an implementation of DBS when the dbf is a shifted-periodic curve and characterize its overhead. We also present efficient composition operations on DBS that widen the class of implemented servers to tightly serve tasks arising in most practical settings. Copyright © 2011 ACM.

The Dual Processor Platform (DPP) is a novel architecture template for networked embedded systems based on a strictly asynchronous processor interconnect that allows to minimize interference with a proven predictable behavior [7]. Contrary to traditional platforms [1, 5] DPP tries to mitigate interference by isolating different tasks and mapping them onto dedicated hardware resources. Typically, two different task sets - (i) sensing/actuation/data processing and (ii) communication - are mapped onto two different physically separated processing elements (usually low-power microcontrollers), allowing each to be optimized according to their individual requirements. Such hardware partitioning is a standard approach, frequently found in more complex sensor system implementations [2]. While the communication processor handles wireless packet transmission and reception, the application processor is dedicated to the sensor data acquisition, processing and actuation. But this strict separation of resources and function also requires a processor interconnect: BOLT [7], a stateful processor interconnect specifically designed based on this paradigm allows a strict decoupling of the power, clock and time domains of the two processing elements by allowing only asynchronous message passing between the two. The strict limitation to an asynchronous interface allows for predictable run-time behavior that, in addition to typical behavior observed from experiments, has been formally verified [7]. A new generation algorithm of two-dimensional triple-codeweight asymmetric optical orthogonal codes for optical code division multiple access （OCDMA） networks is proposed. The code cardinality is obtained and the error-probability performance for corresponding OCDMA system is analyzed. The codes with two constraints （i.e., auto- and cross-correlation properties） being unequal are taken into account. On the premise of fixed system resources, the code of the error-probability performance, it is shown cardinality can be significantly improved. By analysis that the codes with different parameters have different performances. Therefore, this type of codes can be applied to support diverse quality of service （QoS） and satisfy the quality requirement of different multimedia or distinct users, and simultaneously make the better use of bandwidth resources in oDtical networks.

Batteries play an integral role in Wireless Sensor networks as they provide the energy necessary to operate the individual sensor nodes. In order to extend the network's lifetime, and theoretically permit continuous operation even for systems with high-energy consumption, environmental energy harvesting has attracted much interest. It has been shown that the motes' utility can be improved significantly if run-time knowledge of remaining battery capacity is available. In this work, a light-weight and cost effective approach to approximating the battery state-of-charge (SOC) based on voltage measurements is presented. Despite commonly perceived as inferior to other approaches, a performance evaluation shows that SOC approximations with over 95% accuracy are possible. It is further shown that battery inefficiencies due to e.g., temperature and aging are taken into consideration despite not explicitly modeling these effects. The approach only requires system input voltage measurements, but benefits from optional current and temperature measurements. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

Air quality monitoring is extremely important as air pollution has a direct impact on human health. Low-cost gas sensors are used to effectively perceive the environment by mounting them on top of mobile vehicles, for example, using a public transport network. Thus, these sensors are part of a mobile network and perform from time to time measurements in each others vicinity. In this paper, we study three calibration algorithms that exploit co-located sensor measurements to enhance sensor calibration and consequently the quality of the pollution measurements on-the-fly. Forward calibration, based on a traditional approach widely used in the literature, is used as performance benchmark for two novel algorithms: backward and instant calibration. We validate all three algorithms with real ozone pollution measurements carried out in an urban setting by comparing gas sensor output to high-quality measurements from analytical instruments. We find that both backward and instant calibration reduce the average measurement error by a factor of two compared to forward calibration. Furthermore, we unveil the arising difficulties if sensor calibration is not based on reliable reference measurements but on sensor readings of low-cost gas sensors which is inevitable in a mobile scenario with only a few reliable sensors. We propose a solution and evaluate its effect on the measurement accuracy in experiments and simulation. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This work presents the design, implementation, and end-to-end system concept and integration of a wireless data acquisition system for high-accuracy positioning applications. A wireless network of GPS-equipped sensor nodes, built from low-cost off-the-shelf components, autonomously acquires L1 GPS data for Differential GPS (DGPS) processing of raw satellite information. The differential processing on the backend infrastructure achieves relative position and motion of individual nodes within the network with sub-centimeter accuracy. Leveraging on global GPS time synchronization, network-wide synchronized measurement scheduling, and duty-cycling coupled with power optimized operation and robustness against harsh environmental conditions make the introduced sensor node well suited for monitoring or surveying applications in remote areas. Unattended operation, high spatial and temporal coverage and low cost distinguish this approach from traditional, very costly and time consuming approaches. The prototype data acquisition system based on a low-power mote equipped with a commercially available GPS module has been successfully implemented and validated in a testbed setting. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this demo abstract we present a custom-built low-power geophone sensor node which features on-device mountaineer classification using a convolutional neural network. The execution of such a processing-heavy algorithm on an embedded platform is enabled by optimizing the memory requirement of the neural network through advanced quantization and pipelining techniques. As a result, real-time classification with low energy consumption can be achieved. © 2019 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Identifying acoustic events from a continuously streaming audio source is of interest for many applications including environmental monitoring for basic research. In this scenario neither different event classes are known nor what distinguishes one class from another. Therefore, an unsupervised feature learning method for exploration of audio data is presented in this paper. It incorporates the two following novel contributions: First, an audio frame predictor based on a Convolutional LSTM autoencoder is demonstrated, which is used for unsupervised feature extraction. Second, a training method for autoencoders is presented, which leads to distinct features by amplifying event similarities. In comparison to standard approaches, the features extracted from the audio frame predictor trained with the novel approach show 13 % better results when used with a classifier and 36 % better results when used for clustering. © 5th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2017 - Workshop Track Proceedings. The size of personal music collections has constantly increased over the past years. As a result, the traditional metadata based lists to browse these collections have reached their limits. Interfaces that are based on music similarity offer an alternative and thus are increasingly gaining attention. Music similarity is typically either derived from audio-features (objective approach) or from user driven information sources, such as collaborative filtering or social tags (subjective approach). Studies show that the latter techniques outperform audio-based approaches when it comes to describe the perceived music similarity. However, subjective approaches typically only define pairwise relations as opposed to the global notion of similarity given by audio-feature spaces. Many of the proposed interfaces for similarity based music access inherently depend on this global notion and are thus not applicable to user driven music similarity measures. The first contribution of this paper is a high dimensional music space that is based on user driven similarity measures. It combines the advantages of audio-feature spaces (global view) with the advantages of subjective sources that better reflect the users' perception. The proposed space compactly represents similarity and therefore is well suited for offline use, such as in mobile applications. To demonstrate the practical applicability, the second contribution is a comprehensive mobile music player that incorporates several smart interfaces to access the user's music collection. Based on this application, we finally present a large-scale user study that underlines the benefits of the introduced interfaces and shows their great user acceptance. © 2010 ACM.
