Nowadays, both vehicular active safety service and user infotainment service have become two core applications for urban Vehicular Delay Tolerant networks(u VDTNs). Both core applications require a high data transmission capacity over u VDTNs. In addition, the connection between any two vehicles in u VDTNs is intermittent and opportunistic. Intermittent data dissemination over u VDTNs is a stringent and challenging issue. In this paper,we propose Intermittent Geocast Routing(IGR). For the first step, IGR has to estimate the active connection time interval via the moving directions and velocities between any two vehicles. Second, the throughput function for u VDTNs is fitted by building a wavelet neural network traffic model. Third, the throughput function within the effective connection time interval is integrated to obtain the forwarding capability estimation of the node. Fourth, a high-efficiency geocast routing algorithm using the node forwarding capability for u VDTNs is designed. Finally, IGR is simulated on the opportunistic Network Environment simulator. Experimental results show that IGR can greatly improve the packet delivery ratio, transmission delay, delay jitter, and packet loss rate compared with the state of the art.

We show that a linear relation exists between the device sensitivity and the quality (Q) factor of a dual- waveguide coupled microring resonator optical biosensor when the optimal conditions are satisfied. We also show that the detection limit depends on the loss coefficient and signal-to-nosie ratio (SNR) of the overall system, rather than the circumference of the ring. For a microring resonator sensor whose Q factor is 20000, the detection limit is found to be about 10-7 with 30-dB SNR, which is in good agreement with reported experimental data. These results indicate that loss reduction is the top priority in the design and fabrication of highly sensitive microring resonator optical biosensors.

A data-aided frequency offset estimation algorithm suited for burst-mode communications is described and analyzed. The proposed algorithm is based on a Pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) frame structure, which consists of regularly spaced pilot symbols and a group of consecutive pilot symbols embedded in. Firstly, an initial estimate based on consecutive pilot symbols is generated for reducing the phase ambiguity. Secondly, based on both spaced and consecutive pilot symbols, fine preliminary estimates are generated to improve estimation accuracy. Lastly, the final estimate is obtained by combining the fine preliminary estimates with the initial. This three-step algorithm is shown to provide high estimation accuracy close to those of FFT-based algorithm at low Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In addition, it is suitable for high carrier frequency offset cases.
