Partial bandgap characteristics of parallelogram lattice photonic crystals are proposed to suppress the radiation modes in a compact dielectric waveguide taper so as to obtain high transmittance in a large wavelength range. Band structure of the photonic crystals shows that there exists a partial bandgap, The photonie crystals with partial bandgap are then used as the cladding of a waveguide taper to reduce the radiation loss efficiently. In comparison with the conventional dielectric taper and the complete bandgap photonic crystal taper, the partial bandgap photonic crystal taper has a high transmittance of above 85% with a wide band of 170 nm.

In this paper, we demonstrate six types of metamaterial absorbers (MMAs) by measuring their absorptivities in an X-band (8 12 GHz) rectangular waveguide. Some of the MMAs have been demonstrated previously by using the free space measurement method, and the others are proposed firstly in this paper. The measured results show that all of the six MMAs exhibit high absorptivities above 98%, which have similar absorbing characteristics to those measured in the free space. The numerically obtained surface current densities for each MMA show that the absorbing mechanism is the same as that under the free space conditions. Such a demonstration method is superior to the conventional free space measurement method due to the small-scale test samples required, the simple measure device, and its low cost. Most importantly, the proposed method opens a way to enable MMAs to be used in microwave applications such as matched terminations.

In forensic casework, the application of automatic speaker verification (SV) aims to determine the likelihood ratio of a suspect being vs. being not the speaker of an incriminating speech recording. For that purpose, the likelihood of the anti-speaker has to be estimated from the speech of an adequate number of other speakers. In many cases, speech signals of such an anti-speaker population are not available and it is generally too expensive to make an appropriate collection. This paper presents a practical procedure of forensic SV which is based on a text-dependent SV system and instead of an anti-speaker population, a special speech database is used to calibrate the valuation scale for an individual case.

A new approach to continuous speech recognition (CSR) for German is presented, which integrates both statistical knowledge (at the acoustic-phonetic level) and rule-based knowledge (at the word and sentence levels).We introduce a flexible framework allowing bidirectional processing and virtually any search strategy given an acoustic model and a context-free grammar. An implementation of this class of recognizers by means of a word spotter and an island chart parser is presented. A word recognition accuracy of 93.5% is reported on a speaker dependent recognition task with a 4k words dictionary.

Polyglot text-to-speech synthesis, i.e. the synthesis of sentences containing one or more inclusions from other languages, primarily depends on an accurate morpho-syntactic analyzer for such mixed-lingual texts. From the output of this analyzer, the pronunciation can be derived by means of phonological transformations which are language-specific and depend on various contexts. In this paper a new rule formalism for such phonological transformations is presented, which complies also with the requirements of the mixed-lingual situation.
