We investigate a joint data compression and task scheduling problem for Low Earth Orbit Satellite networks (LEOSNs), to maximize the sum weights of tasks while simultaneously minimizing the total data loss. First, we propose a novel Multi-Resource Conflict Graph (MRCG) model to characterize the intertwined communication and computation allocation conflicts inherent in typical data offloading processes of LEOSNs. Leveraging the proposed MRCG model, we then formulate the studied problem for LEOSNs as a linear integer program, to maximize the normalized weighted sum of both the sum task weight and the total data loss. We further explore the intrinsic structure of the linear integer program to propose an efficient solution using the Semi-Definite Relaxation (SDR) technique. Finally, the simulation results underscore that the synergistic optimization of data compression and task scheduling significantly facilitates the data offloading efficiency of LEOSNs, and the performances surpass existing benchmarks across a broad range of system parameters. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have wide applications in data storage systems, communication systems and consumer electronics due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. Let α be a generator of F∗3m, where m is a positive integer. Denote by C(i1,i2,···,it) the cyclic code with generator polynomial mαi1 (x)mαi2 (x) · · · mαit (x), where mαi(x) is the minimal polynomial of αi over F3. In this paper, by analyzing the solutions of certain equations over finite fields, we present four classes of optimal ternary cyclic codes C(0,1,e) and C(1,e,s) with parameters [3m − 1, 3m − 3m/2 − 2, 4], where s = 3m−1/2 . In addition, by determining the solutions of certain equations and analyzing the irreducible factors of certain polynomials over F3m, we present four classes of optimal ternary cyclic codes C(2,e) and C(1,e) with parameters [3m−1, 3m−2m−1, 4]. Recent studies have focused on leveraging large-scale artificial intelligence (LAI) models to improve semantic representation and compression capabilities. However, the substantial computational demands of LAI models pose significant challenges for real-time communication scenarios. To address this, this paper proposes utilizing knowledge distillation (KD) techniques to extract and condense knowledge from LAI models, effectively reducing model complexity and computation latency. Nevertheless, the inherent complexity of LAI models leads to prolonged inference times during distillation, while their lack of channel awareness compromises the distillation performance. These limitations make standard KD methods unsuitable for task-oriented semantic communication scenarios. To address these issues, we propose a fast distillation method featuring a pre-stored compression mechanism that eliminates the need for repetitive inference, significantly improving efficiency. Furthermore, a channel adaptive module is incorporated to dynamically adjust the transmitted semantic information based on varying channel conditions, enhancing communication reliability and adaptability. In addition, an information bottleneck-based loss function is derived to guide the fast distillation process. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme outperform baselines in term of task accuracy, model size, computation latency, and training data requirements. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we address the problem of image semantic communication in a multi-user deployment scenario and propose a federated learning (FL) strategy for a Swin Transformer-based semantic communication system (FSSC). Firstly, we demonstrate that the adoption of a Swin Transformer for joint source-channel coding (JSCC) effectively extracts semantic information in the communication system. Next, the FL framework is introduced to collaboratively learn a global model by aggregating local model parameters, rather than directly sharing clients’ data. This approach enhances user privacy protection and reduces the workload on the server or mobile edge. Simulation evaluations indicate that our method outperforms the typical JSCC algorithm and traditional separate-based communication algorithms. Particularly after integrating local semantics, the global aggregation model has further increased the Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) by more than 2dB, thoroughly proving the effectiveness of our algorithm. Illegitimate intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) can pose significant physical layer security risks on multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems. Recently, a DISCO approach has been proposed an illegitimate IRS with random and time-varying reflection coefficients, referred to as a “disco” IRS (DIRS). Such DIRS can attack MU-MISO systems without relying on either jamming power or channel state information (CSI), and classical anti-jamming techniques are in-effective for the DIRS-based fully-passive jammers (DIRS-based FPJs). In this paper, we propose an IRS-enhanced anti-jamming precoder against DIRS-based FPJs that requires only statistical rather than instantaneous CSI of the DIRS-jammed channels. Specifically, a legitimate IRS is introduced to reduce the strength of the DIRS-based jamming relative to the transmit signals at a legitimate user (LU). In addition, the active beamforming at the legitimate access point (AP) is designed to maximize the signal-to-jamming-plus-noise ratios (SJNRs). Numerical results are presented to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed IRS-enhanced anti-jamming precoder against DIRS-based FPJs.

Multimodal learning has significantly advanced the extraction of features from varied data sources, enhancing model performance. Federated learning (FL) complements this by enabling collaborative training while maintaining data privacy. The fusion of these two fields, multimodal federated learning, offers considerable promise. Yet, standard methods often incorrectly assume that each node in the FL network has a full complement of multimodal data, which is rare in real-world applications. In our study, we present a novel architecture designed to surmount these challenges, termed the Unimodal Training - Multimodal Prediction (UTMP) framework, positioned within the multimodal federated learning paradigm. Our proposed model, the HA-Fedformer, is a transformer-based model crafted to facilitate unimodal training on the client-side using exclusively unimodal datasets and to execute multimodal inference by synthesizing insights from multiple clients. Our HA-Fedformer model effectively handles non-IID data through a novel uncertainty-aware aggregation technique and layer-wise Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling in local encoders. It also resolves misaligned language sequences via cross-modal decoder aggregation, capturing correlations between decoders trained on different modalities. Our comprehensive evaluations conducted on widely recognized sentiment analysis benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of the HA-Fedformer. The results show that our model achieves a substantial uplift in performance. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is intended as a potential technique for future 6-th Generation wireless communication system. However, acquiring accurate channel state information is challenging since the channel matrices are high-dimensional due to large number of reflective elements (REs) in RIS. In this paper, we investigate the problem of sparse channel estimation (CE) in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system equipped with large RIS (IRIS), where there are only few REs that are active during CE phase. We propose a two-stage tensor based CE algorithm that exploits the merits of IRIS. Specifically, IRIS act as reflector in the first stage of CE. Then, we identify the condition for the IRIS to activate few specified REs in the second stage. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing CE schemes.

The purpose of infrared and visible image fusion is to combine the background information of the visible images and the thermal target information of the infrared images. Current fusion methods often neglect the challenges of low-light conditions. In the night scene, the existing methods fail to capture texture information from the visible images that is hidden in the darkness, producing suboptimal fusion results that can hinder subsequent visual applications. Therefore, we propose a method for infrared and visible image fusion under night scenes, termed as IDFusion. Specifically, our method is divided into three parts, first, a dense auto-encoder is designed to obtain more useful features from the source images. Then we design a brightness enhancement network that removes visible degraded illumination maps to obtain brightness-enhanced features. Finally, a texture fusion network is designed so that the infrared features and enhanced visible features avoid texture loss during the fusion process. Experimental results show that our network can obtain better fusion results, outperforming state-of-the-art methods in terms of subjective visual effects and quantitative metrics.

We present GauKGT5, a sequence-to-sequence model proposed for knowledge graph completion (KGC). Our research extends the KGT5 model, a recent sequence-to-sequence link prediction (LP) model. GauKGT5 takes advantage of textual characteristics inherent in the knowledge graph, exhibiting a small model size. However, KGT5’s proficiency in link prediction necessitates the ensemble with a knowledge graph embedding model, which itself poses challenges due to its substantial size and expense. By integrating the Gated Attention Unit into the KGT5 model and directly applying it to the encoder-decoder structure, we achieve improved contextual dependency capturing within the sequence, resulting in enhanced prediction accuracy, accelerated training speed, and enhanced computational efficiency. At the same time, we introduce parallel computing as a means to enhance the efficiency of model training and inference within the XPU distributed computing environment.

ICT: In-field calibration transfer for air qality sensor deployments

Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in urban air pollution monitoring, where hundreds of low-cost air quality sensors are deployed city-wide. To guarantee data accuracy and consistency, these sensors need periodic calibration after deployment. Since access to ground truth references is often limited in large-scale deployments, it is diJJicult to conduct city-wide post-deployment sensor calibration. In this work we propose In-field Calibration Transfer (ICT), a calibration scheme that transfers the calibration parameters of source sensors (with access to references) to target sensors (without access to references). On observing that (i) the distributions of ground truth in both source and target locations are similar and (ii) the transformation is approximately linear, ICT derives the transformation based on the similarity of distributions with a novel optimization formulation. The performance of ICT is further improved by exploiting spatial prediction of air quality levels and multi-source fusion. Experiments show that ICT is able to calibrate the target sensors as if they had direct access to the references. © 2019 Association for Computing Machinery.
