Accounting of service usage is one of the main tasks of service providers in their operation and management processes, providing the necessary information for the subsequent charging process. Because of the increasing number and diversity of services in IP-based networks, accounting has to provide flexible and extensible means supporting different service specific accounting attributes in order to meet the providers' requirements. Furthermore, users typically access services of different providers, resulting in a service composition in a multi-provider environment. After identifying key players in this scenario, this paper presents a service model, classifying different service types, and proposes an architecture (SMArch) for a common accounting scheme, which is implemented based on the IPDR framework and reference code

Performance analysis plays an increasingly important role in the design of embedded real-time systems. Time-to-market pressure in this domain is high while the available implementation technology is often pushed to its limit to minimize cost. This requires analysis of performance as early as possible in the life cycle. Simulation-based techniques are often not sufficiently productive. We present an alternative, analytical, approach based on Real-Time Calculus. Modular performance analysis is presented through a case study in which several candidate architectures are evaluated for a distributed in-car radio navigation system. The analysis is efficient due to the high abstraction level of the model, which makes the technique suitable for early design exploration.

As of today, grids provide the technology, applications, and platforms for a seamless access to resources, services, and content in a fully decentralized world of distributed information, computing power, and information technology business. Grid computing is about resource sharing and coordinated problem solving in dynamic, multi-institutional virtual organization. Increasingly, advanced grid approaches address knowledge grids. Therefore, the goal is to create a transparent grid infrastructure, to make the grid invisible and to overcome today's rather static approaches. Thus, the dynamic virtual organizations (DVOs) approach provides the right incentives to act as an enabler for invisible grids. First, this paper studies DVOs and its grid service management requirements. Second, a concept for service management of DVOs is presented

Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems are flexible, robust, and self-organizing resource sharing infrastructures which are typically designed in a fully decentralized manner. However, a key problem of such systems are peers overusing a resource. This paper presents a fully decentralized scheme to achieve fair use in P2P systems, which does not require a priori information about a peer. The approach developed is based on a scarce resource trading scheme (SRTCPU), which utilizes CPU time as a form of payment. SRTCPU provides an incentive to offer CPU time in return of consuming a scarce resource. A distributed DNS has been implemented as an example application that uses SRTCPU.

Today, peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, e.g., filesharing networks like Gnutella, are specialised towards specific purposes. New P2P networks have to be created and installed to support new purposes. Furthermore, current P2P networks are almost impossible to use in business processes, because their lack of control makes them too unreliable. This paper addresses these problems by introducing a new middleware for P2P networks. The middleware supports the deployment and use of services inside a P2P network, independent of their purpose. It follows a modular design, thus allowing adaption through plug-ins. It includes negotiation mechanisms which can be used to configure a service according to a specific need. Furthermore, the middleware makes use of strong identities and offers mechanisms enabling the management of services through market forces, thus allowing the creation of legally enforceable contracts. Thus, it allows to reliably compose services into new value-added services. This paper also briefly describes the middleware's implementation and application in filesharing and wireless LAN scenarios. © 2005 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Today's Internet technology is able to support different Quality-of-Service (QoS) classes to meet different application and user requirements. Combined with the support of user mobility, service providers offer differentiated services not only to their own customers, but also to roaming users. This offer is accompanied normally by more complex pricing schemes which require a complex accounting of the real service consumption. As commercial provisioning of Internet services needs to meet security requirements of providers as well as users, the service consumption must be provable to justify billing and to protect users and providers against other malicious parties. This paper develops the NorCIS architecture (Non-repudiation of the Consumption of Internet Services) and its detailed protocol interactions which allow for the generation and transfer of non-repudiation evidences of service consumptions in a mobile Internet Protocol (IP)-based environment. An evidence structure is proposed, supporting a variety of accounting schemes and including information which are used to protect against various attacks. In addition, NorCIS proposes the use of virtual identifiers within evidences to support the privacy of users' identities. © 2005 IEEE.

Frequency and intensity of Internet attacks are rising with an alarming pace. Several technologies and concepts were proposed for fighting distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks: traceback, pushback, i3, SOS and Mayday. This paper shows that in the case of DDoS reflector attacks they are either ineffective or even counterproductive. We then propose a novel concept and system that extends the control over network traffic by network users to the Internet using adaptive traffic processing devices. We safely delegate partial network management capabilities from network operators to network users. All network packets with a source or destination address owned by a network user can now also be controlled within the Internet instead of only at the network user's Internet uplink. By limiting the traffic control features and by restricting the realm of control to the "owner" of the traffic, we can rule out misuse of this system. Applications of our system are manifold: prevention of source address spoofing, DDoS attack mitigation, distributed firewall-like filtering, new ways of collecting traffic statistics, traceback, distributed network debugging, support for forensic analyses and many more.

We propose a novel near real-time method for early detection of worm outbreaks in high-speed Internet backbones. Our method attributes several behavioural properties to individual hosts like ratio of outgoing to incoming traffic, responsiveness and number of connections. These properties are used to group hosts into distinct behaviour classes. We use flow-level (Cisco Net Flow) information exported by the border routers of a Swiss Internet backbone provider (AS559/SWITCH). By tracking the cardinality of each class over time and alarming on fast increases and other significant changes, we can early and reliably detect worm outbreaks. We successfully validated our method with archived flow-level traces of recent major Internet e-mail based worms such as MyDoomA and Sobig.F, and fast spreading network worms like Witty and Blaster. Our method is generic in the sense that it does not require any previous knowledge about the exploits and scanning method used by the worms. It can give a set of suspicious hosts in near real-time that have recently and drastically changed their network behaviour and hence are highly likely to be infected.

Providing users with help and other documentation is essential for any software targeted at end users. Authoring help and documentation in a platform-independent way is hard, because different help systems have different conventions for structuring and organizing the documents. The help system generator (HSG) presented in this paper provides an easy and platform-independent way of preparing and publishing help and documentation. Using HSG, software creators can easily author, reuse, and publish help and documentation for different platforms

We developed an open source Internet backbone monitoring and traffic analysis framework named UPFrame. It captures UDP NetFlow packets, buffers it in shared memory and feeds it to customised plug-ins. UPFrame is highly tolerant to misbehaving plug-ins and provides a watchdog mechanism for restarting crashed plug-ins. This makes UP-Frame an ideal platform for experiments. It also features a traffic shaper for smoothing incoming traffic bursts. Using this framework, we have investigated IDS-like anomaly detection possibilities for high-speed Internet backbone networks. We have implemented several plug-ins for host behaviour classification, traffic activity pattern recognition, and traffic monitoring. We successfully detected the recent Blaster, Nachi and Witty worm outbreaks in a medium-sized Swiss Internet backbone (AS559) using border router NetFlow data captured in the DDoSVax project. The framework is efficient and robust and can complement traditional intrusion detection systems.
