An adaptive critic design (ACD) based dynamic optimal power flow control (DOPFC) is proposed in this paper as a solution to the smart grid operation in a high short-term uncertainty and variability environment. With the increasing penetration of intermittent renewable generation, power system stability and security need to be ensured dynamically as the system operating condition continuously changes. The proposed DOPFC dynamically tracks the power system optimal operating point by continuously adjusting the steady-state set points from the traditional OPF algorithms. The ACD technique, specifically the dual heuristic dynamic programming (DHP), is used to provide nonlinear optimal control, where the control objective is formulated explicitly to incorporate system operation economy, stability and security considerations. A 12 bus test power system is used to demonstrate the development and effectiveness of the proposed ACD-based DOPFC using recurrent neural networks.

The assignment of fixed priorities to tasks and messages in distributed real-time systems is known to be an NP-hard problem, and thus there is no optimal method to accomplish it in polynomial time. This fact makes it a suitable problem to be approached with generic search and optimization algorithms. In this paper we propose a genetic algorithm with a permutational solution encoding for the assignment of fixed priorities to tasks and messages in distributed real-time systems using a holistic approach. This paper shows that the genetic algorithm can find more and better schedulable priority assignments than HO PA, which is, as far as we know, one of the best methods for the fixed priority assignment in distributed real-time systems.

Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks are a very interesting self-organizing communication system that can make the traffic on our roads much safer. A lot of aspects of the behavior of these systems are studied using network simulation frameworks. While the upper communication layers of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks are mainly simulated according to their specifications, in this paper we will highlight weak points in these simulations. They occur due the fact that the layers below the link layer are considered very rarely and are also almost neglected by the commonly used network simulation frameworks. This can potentially lead to inaccurate simulation results which can be fatal when studying safety relevant applications or application with real-time constraints. In this work in progress paper we are going to propose an approach to get this under control.

The paper describes an approach to text-to-speech synthesis based on processing in harmonic domain. A special harmonic analysis technique is presented that provides accurate estimation of instantaneous harmonic parameters. The technique is based on narrow band filtering aligned to the fundamental frequency, which improves estimation accuracy of higher-order harmonics with rapid frequency changes. The advanced analysis ensures natural-sounding amplitude, pitch and phase matching because of the fine deterministic/ stochastic separation. Speech synthesis is carried out using parametric representation that allows applying voice conversion techniques in order to get a multi voice synthesis system with a single voice acoustic database. © 2010 Division of Signal Processin.

Dish-Stirling systems are a form of concentrating solar power (CSP) emerging as an efficient and reliable source of renewable energy. Various technical hurdles are involved in the grid interconnection of dish-Stirling systems, particularly with issues related to power factor correction, low voltage ride-through capability, and reactive power planning. While there are no grid-interconnection requirements specific to dish-Stirling technology, the requirements currently established for wind farms are used as a starting point due to the similar design and operating characteristics between wind farms and dish-Stirling solar farms. A dish-Stirling solar farm requires external reactive power compensation to meet the power factor requirements presently set for wind farms. The following paper provides a brief overview of dish-Stirling technology, along with an analysis of methods for meeting power factor grid interconnection requirements and maintaining necessary voltage levels under varying irradiance conditions due to cloud cover. Simulation results for voltage and power factor of the solar farm are provided for both steady state and cloud transient conditions within a 12-bus network. ©2010 IEEE.

Load Forecasting has an important role in load generation, scheduling, planning etc. in power system. Different computational intelligent techniques are used in Short Term Load Forecasting (STLF) to make it more effective. Neural Networks (NN) is an effective mapping algorithm that can map complex input-output relationships, which is an important technique to do STLF having existing dataset. Usually a proper NN is sufficient to achieve accepted level of performance. But different load dataset may bear some irregular nature of load demand scenario due to having special events, where accuracy of NN suffers significantly. To enhance the performance for those situations, the authors propose a hybrid STLF approach-Neural Networks and Fuzzy (NNF) method. The authors first try to select the best possible trained NN and do STLF. Considering historical data trend and of existing errors of NN solution, for those special days, NNF determine the Load Change trend. Fuzzy Inference Rules (FIR) have been developed to further improvement by fuzzy method. In fuzzy part the NNF apply FIR on two inputs: STLF of NN and Load Change trend, to enhance the performance of STLF for special events. To evaluate the proposed method it is applied on the dataset of Regional Power Control Center of Saudi Electricity Company, Western Operation Area (SEC-WOA). Since the authors deal with the daily load dataset of Saudia Arabia of Hijri years (Arabian years), Hajj has been chosen as one of the anomalous load scenario. Empirical results show that for Hajj event of Hijri 1428 year, the accuracy of STLF by NN is approximately 6.37%, whereas proposed NNF can decline the error at only 1.92%. ©2010 IEEE.

Clouds and grids are distributed resource infrastructures that are subjected to both on demand as well as Advance reservation (AR) requests. Matchmaking or assigning an appropriate resource to an advance reservation request is an important operation performed by the resource management middleware. Most existing research on matchmaking strategies uses a priori knowledge of the local scheduling policy used at a resource in the cloud/grid. However, exact knowledge of the scheduling policy used at every resource is unlikely to be available on real heterogeneous systems deploying a variety of different resources. This paper presents a matchmaking strategy that does not use detailed knowledge of the scheduling policies used at resources. Results of performance simulations for the strategy are very encouraging.

A high frequency transformer is a critical component in a dual active bridge converter (DAB) used in a power electronics-based solid state transformer. Operation of a DAB converter requires its transformer to have a specific amount of winding leakage inductance. The demand for high efficiency requires minimization of transformer copper loss and core loss. Furthermore, available window area limits the winding arrangement of transformer. A hybrid of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and differential evolution (DE) is proposed to solve this multi-objective problem with constraints. DE provides diversity to pbest of each particle, which is missing in standard PSO. The differential evolution particle swarm optimization (DEPSO) algorithm is applied to find optimal transformer designs for DAB converters. Results show the DEPSO method is a generic effective way to find optimal high frequency transformer design. © 2010 IEEE.
