Deep learning belongs to the field of artificial intelligence, where machines perform tasks that typically require some kind of human intelligence. Deep learning tries to achieve this by drawing inspiration from the learning of a human brain. Similar to the basic structure of a brain, which consists of (billions of) neurons and connections between them, a deep learning algorithm consists of an artificial neural network, which resembles the biological brain structure. Mimicking the learning process of humans with their senses, deep learning networks are fed with (sensory) data, like texts, images, videos or sounds. These networks outperform the state-of-the-art methods in different tasks and, because of this, the whole field saw an exponential growth during the last years. This growth resulted in way over 10,000 publications per year in the last years. For example, the search engine PubMed alone, which covers only a sub-set of all publications in the medical field, provides already over 11,000 results in Q3 2020 for the search term 'deep learning', and around 90% of these results are from the last three years. Consequently, a complete overview over the field of deep learning is already impossible to obtain and, in the near future, it will potentially become difficult to obtain an overview over a subfield. However, there are several review articles about deep learning, which are focused on specific scientific fields or applications, for example deep learning advances in computer vision or in specific tasks like object detection. With these surveys as a foundation, the aim of this contribution is to provide a first high-level, categorized meta-survey of selected reviews on deep learning across different scientific disciplines and outline the research impact that they already have during a short period of time. The classification of variable objects provides insight into a wide variety of astrophysics ranging from stellar interiors to galactic nuclei. The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) provides time-series observations that record the variability of more than a billion sources. The scale of these data necessitates automated approaches to make a thorough analysis. Building on previous work, this paper reports the results of the ZTF Source Classification Project (SCoPe), which trains neural network and XGBoost machine-learning (ML) algorithms to perform dichotomous classification of variable ZTF sources using a manually constructed training set containing 170,632 light curves. We find that several classifiers achieve high precision and recall scores, suggesting the reliability of their predictions for 209,991,147 light curves across 77 ZTF fields. We also identify the most important features for XGB classification and compare the performance of the two ML algorithms, finding a pattern of higher precision among XGB classifiers. The resulting classification catalog is available to the public, and the software developed for SCoPe is open-source and adaptable to future time-domain surveys. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. This paper presents a summary of the Masked Face Recognition Competitions (MFR) held within the 2021 International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB 2021). The competition attracted a total of 10 participating teams with valid submissions. The affiliations of these teams are diverse and associated with academia and industry in nine different countries. These teams successfully submitted 18 valid solutions. The competition is designed to motivate solutions aiming at enhancing the face recognition accuracy of masked faces. Moreover, the competition considered the deployability of the proposed solutions by taking the compactness of the face recognition models into account. A private dataset representing a collaborative, multisession, real masked, capture scenario is used to evaluate the submitted solutions. In comparison to one of the top-performing academic face recognition solutions, 10 out of the 18 submitted solutions did score higher masked face verification accuracy. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Graph-based parallel large scale structure from motion

While Structure from Motion (SfM) achieves great success in 3D reconstruction, it still meets challenges on large scale scenes. In this work, large scale SfM is deemed as a graph problem, and we tackle it in a divide-and-conquer manner. Firstly, the images clustering algorithm divides images into clusters with strong connectivity, leading to robust local reconstructions. Then followed with an image expansion step, the connection and completeness of scenes are enhanced by expanding along with a maximum spanning tree. After local reconstructions, we construct a minimum spanning tree (MST) to find accurate similarity transformations. Then the MST is transformed into a Minimum Height Tree (MHT) to find a proper anchor node and is further utilized to prevent error accumulation. When evaluated on different kinds of datasets, our approach shows superiority over the state-of-the-art in accuracy and efficiency. Our algorithm is open-sourced in https://***/AIBluefisher/GraphSfM. Augmented Reality (AR) offers the potential to integrate physical, digital and social learning experiences in hybrid learning environments and thereby to achieve learning gains, higher motivation or improved interaction and collaboration. Moreover, by means of AR, theory- or calculus-based learning and experimental exploration in the lab can be brought closer together. Here we present a data-driven AR enhancement of experiments in an electricity and magnetism lab course, where measurement data such as actual current and voltage, are transmitted to a head-mounted semi-transparent display (HMD). In addition, preliminary evaluation results are presented. An improved technical understanding of the subject and especially more dense interrelations between individual learners conceptions are observed.

Implicit discourse relation recognition is a challenging task due to the absence of the nec-essary informative clue from explicit connec-tives. The prediction of relations requires a deep understanding of the semantic meanings of sentence pairs. As implicit discourse relation recognizer has to carefully tackle the se-mantic similarity of the given sentence pairs and the severe data sparsity issue exists in the meantime, it is supposed to be beneficial from mastering the entire training data. Thus in this paper, we propose a novel memory mecha-nism to tackle the challenges for further performance improvement. The memory mecha-nism is adequately memorizing information by pairing representations and discourse relations of all training instances, which right fills the slot of the data-hungry issue in the current im-plicit discourse relation recognizer. Our experiments show that our full model with memo-rizing the entire training set reaches new state-of-the-art against strong baselines, which es-pecially for the first time exceeds the milestone of 60% accuracy in the 4-way task. A wide variety of predictive analytics techniques have been developed in statistics, machine learning and data mining; however, many of these algorithms take a black-box approach in which data is input and future predictions are output with no insight into what goes on during the process. Unfortunately, such a closed system approach often leaves little room for injecting domain expertise and can result in frustration from analysts when results seem snurious or confusing. In order to allow for more human-centric approaches, the visualization community has begun developing methods to enable users to incorporate expert knowledge into the pre- diction process at all stages, including data cleaning, feature selection, model building and model validation. This paper surveys current progress and trends in predictive visual ana- lytics, identifies the common framework in which predictive visual analytics systems operate, and develops a summariza- tion of the predictive analytics workfiow.

Cultural objects and art works need ongoing conservation interventions in order to be available for the next generations. The most object-friendly analysis approaches are based on non-destructive techniques (NDTs) that allow both the materials characterisation as well as the decay detection of cultural artefacts. Non-destructive testing and evaluation includes the employment of several methods such as the well-established technique of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy with fibre optics (FORS). Such techniques produce output with multiple series of data for multiple different pigment used in objects. In this work, we present a data management solution that contributes with: 1) a library of known reference pigments/colours;2) a proposed pattern matching technique that allows the automatic classification of any new pigment. The experimental evaluation results show that the data processing proposed is effective. Feedback is particularly encouraging as it allows automation and therefore radically decreased time for pigment/colour matching and identification. © 2017 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Interpersonal spatial relationships ("proxemics") play an important role when people collaborate or work near one another. While state-of-art tracking systems and toolkits have been demonstrated that are able to provide proxemics data, application developers require the ability to define their own custom proxemics events (i.e., the meaning behind specific spatial configurations) rather than conduct manual tests in the UI layer. At the same time, proxemics-aware applications involving shared displays need mechanisms to tightly integrate UI events and proxemics events. This requires a middleware framework that allows developers to define proxemics events by composing low-level proxemics data and optionally UI events. In this paper, we present a proximity-based event model suited to collaboration around large displays, and a corresponding framework for building proxemics-aware applications. The design of this model is derived from a review of prior work, and direct experience implementing and evaluating a proxemics-aware interactive tabletop application (a museum information kiosk). © 2016 ACM.

Ongoing and future climate change driven expansion of aeroallergen-producing plant species comprise a major human health problem across Europe and elsewhere. There is an urgent need to produce accurate, temporally dynamic maps at the continental level, especially in the context of climate uncertainty. This study aimed to restore missing daily ragweed pollen data sets for Europe, to produce phenological maps of ragweed pollen, resulting in the most complete and detailed high-resolution ragweed pollen concentration maps to date. To achieve this, we developed two statistical procedures, a Gaussian method (GM) and deep learning (DL) for restoring missing daily ragweed pollen data sets, based on the plant’s reproductive and growth (phenological, pollen production and frost-related) characteristics. DL model performances were consistently better for estimating annual total pollen concentrations than those of the GM approach. These are the first published modeled maps using altitude correction and phenology to recover missing pollen information. We created a web page (http://***/), including daily ragweed pollen concentration data sets of the stations examined and their restored daily data, allowing one to upload newly measured or recovered daily data. Generation of these maps provides a means to track pollen impacts in the context of climatic shifts, identify geographical regions with high pollen exposure, determine areas of future vulnerability, apply spatially-explicit mitigation measures and prioritize management interventions. © 2023, The Authors.
