Shape structure is about the arrangement and relations between shape parts. Structure-aware shape processing goes beyond local geometry and low level processing, and analyzes and processes shapes at a high level. It focuses more on the global inter and intra semantic relations among the parts of shape rather than on their local geometry. With recent developments in easy shape acquisition, access to vast repositories of 3D models, and simple-to-use desktop fabrication possibilities, the study of structure in shapes has become a central research topic in shape analysis, editing, and modeling. A whole new line of structure-aware shape processing algorithms has emerged that base their operation on an attempt to understand such structure in shapes. The algorithms broadly consist of two key phases: an analysis phase, which extracts structural information from input data;and a (smart) processing phase, which utilizes the extracted information for exploration, editing, and synthesis of novel shapes. In this survey paper, we organize, summarize, and present the key concepts and methodological approaches towards efficient structure-aware shape processing. We discuss common models of structure, their implementation in terms of mathematical formalism and algorithms, and explain the key principles in the context of a number of state-of-the-art approaches. Further, we attempt to list the key open problems and challenges, both at the technical and at the conceptual level, to make it easier for new researchers to better explore and contribute to this topic. Our goal is to both give the practitioner an overview of available structure-aware shape processing techniques, as well as identify future research questions in this important, emerging, and fascinating research area.

By building a wired passive stylus we have added pressure sensitivity to existing capacitive touch screen devices for less than $10 in materials, about 1/10th the cost of existing solutions. The stylus makes use of the built-in audio interface that is available on most smartphones and tablets on the market today. Limitations of the device include the physical constraint of wires, the occupation of one audio input and output channel, and increased latency equal to the period of at least one audio buffer duration. The stylus has been demonstrated in two NIME applications thus far: a visual musical score drawing and a singing synthesis application. © 2013, Steering Committee of the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression. This paper presents a new approach for the evaluation of User Experience (UX) aspects applied to virtual museums (VM) - VMUXE. A wide percentage of projects and applications for VMs are often "born and buried" in digital labs, without having been experimented and monitored with people. These "prototypes" are the result of experts, technicians, curators, combined together to give birth for multidisciplinary and avant-garde outputs. Earlier attempts to evaluate VM installations failed due to the lack of strategy facing the multidimensional complexity in studying and comparing digital applications in different installations using different devices and metaphors offering different UXs. As a conclusion "communicating" culture through the aid of advanced technology was not a technological issue, but an epistemological one. Setting up a good process of evaluation and analysis is therefore important for establishing next generation virtual museums (NGVM) aiming to reach certain goals such as knowledge exchange, cognitive improvement and heritage communication. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This work presents a methodology for designing online web presentations reusing a large scale, interactive and immersive VR installation by mapping assets as well as interactions to a low capability environment. With the emergence of WebGL plugin-free interactive 3D graphics inside limited information processing environments, e.g. browser technologies, becomes reality. However, macro VR worlds typically use large or even out-of-core data sets in order to produce and communicate scientifically relevant content. The major challenge still remains on how we can redesign and optimize applications that have been planned for macro VR worlds and map those to adequate concepts of micro scale worlds. We showcase this in the area of virtual archaeology for the online virtual museum of "Villa Di Livia", part of the bigger project "Flaminia Reloaded", in which several limitations could become crucial. The elaborated workflow could easily be adopted by other VMs and assist in future migrations. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We present a novel method to modulate influence of diffuse scattering in fluid cavity and reflection at boundary of pulse-echo ultrasound image. A simplified formation of ultrasound model is used to delineate it, and which is merged with modified dehaze model from principle of ultrasonic imaging, a legible fluid cavity in vascular or amniotic fluid of ultrasound image is obtained. Local and global characteristics of the image are utilized to adjust diffuse in different levels. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is capable of producing ultrasound images that have better image quality and greater fidelity to the true tissue reflectivity. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

In many biomedical applications, it is often desired to simulate, analyse and visualise the dynamics of a particular patient based on a patient-specific musculoskeletal model. However, reconstructing a patient-specific model directly from medical images is highly labour intensive, and impractical in the clinical context. A more efficient method is to derive it from an atlas musculoskeletal model using patient-specific hints. In this paper, Laplacian mesh processing is introduced to deform an atlas model to a patient-specific model, based on patient-specific landmarks extracted from two orthogonal clinical images and using least-squares error optimization. Muscle attachment landmarks and motion landmarks in the atlas are also transformed as part of the process. Drift and inter-surface penetrations are prevented by supplementary inter-surface landmarks. Mesh simplification and reconstruction are used to avoid out-of-memory failures that may result from trying to deform models at high resolution.

Measuring image quality is an interesting and challenging area of research. In this paper we investigate the performance of the statistical functions called copula as image quality measures. These functions are popular for applications where data distributions are unknown. This property motivated some researchers to using these copulas in image processing in general and in detecting image changes and image registration in particular. In this research, we use the Gaussian copula to calculate the mutual information, which is the measure of the association of the reference and the distorted or tampered with images. To test the performance of the proposed method, we implemented our method on LIVE image database and compared our results with three popular image quality measures namely Visual Information Fidelity (VIF), Structural Similarity (SSIM), and Universal Quality Measure (UQI). The results show that our quality measure, obtained similar results to the three methods in 99% of the time, hence the proposed method can be considered as an efficient image quality index.

This paper describes the design and construction of an instrumented bouldering wall, and a technique for estimating poses by optimizing an objective function involving contact forces. We describe the design and calibration of the wall, which can capture the contact forces and torques during climbing while motion capture (MoCap) records the climber pose, and present a solution for identifying static poses for a given set of holds and forces. We show results of our calibration process and static poses estimated for different measured forces. To estimate poses from forces, we use optimization and start with an inexpensive objective to guide the solver toward the optimal solution. When good candidates are encountered, the full objective function is evaluated with a physics-based simulation to determine physical plausibility while meeting additional constraints. Comparison between our reconstructed poses and MoCap show that our objective function is a good model for human posture. Copyright 2012 ACM.

In this paper, we present an image watermarking scheme based on discrete wavelet transform and singular value decomposition (SVD) for color Images. This scheme embeds the watermark into the luminance (Y) channel of YC bCR color space of the host image. The luminance image is decomposed up to four DWT levels. SVD is applied on the HL1-4 and LH1-4sub-bands of each level and pseudo random number (PRN) sequence is added to the singular values of their coefficients to produce what we call modified singular values. To obtain the modified HL and LH coefficients, we take the inverse of the SVD of the modified SVs. Finally, we perform the IDWT on the modified HL & LH coefficients as well as HH and LL coefficients to produce the watermarked Y channel image. Then, the modified luminance, Cb and Cr are combined to get the watermarked color image. Simulation results show that our watermark is robust against high JPEG compression, filtering, Gaussian-noise, resizing and other image processing attacks. In addition, this watermark is not susceptible to any false positive or detection of false reference watermark.
