The thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effects (tSZ, kSZ) probe the thermodynamic properties of the circumgalactic and intracluster medium (CGM and ICM) of galaxies, groups, and clusters, since they are proportional, respectively, to the integrated electron pressure and momentum along the line of sight. We present constraints on the gas thermodynamics of CMASS (constant stellar mass) galaxies in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey using new measurements of the kSZ and tSZ signals obtained in a companion paper [Schaan et al.]. Combining kSZ and tSZ measurements, we measure within our model the amplitude of energy injection εM⋆c2, where M⋆ is the stellar mass, to be ε=(40±9)×10−6, and the amplitude of the nonthermal pressure profile to be αNth<0.2(2σ), indicating that less than 20% of the total pressure within the virial radius is due to a nonthermal component. We estimate the effects of including baryons in the modeling of weak-lensing galaxy cross-correlation measurements using the best-fit density profile from the kSZ measurement. Our estimate reduces the difference between the original theoretical model and the weak-lensing galaxy cross-correlation measurements in [A. Leauthaud et al., Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 467, 3024 (2017)] by half (50% at most), but does not fully reconcile it. Comparing the kSZ and tSZ measurements to cosmological simulations, we find that they underpredict the CGM pressure and to a lesser extent the CGM density at larger radii with probabilities to exceed ranging from 0.00 to 0.03 and 0.12 to 0.14, for tSZ and kSZ, respectively. This suggests that the energy injected via feedback models in the simulations that we compared against does not sufficiently heat the gas at these radii. We do not find significant disagreement at smaller radii. These measurements provide novel tests of current and future simulations. We present a tomographic measurement of the cross-correlation between thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (TSZ) maps from Planck and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and weak galaxy lensing shears measured during the first three years of observations of the Dark Energy Survey. This correlation is sensitive to the thermal energy in baryons over a wide redshift range and is therefore a powerful probe of astrophysical feedback. We detect the correlation at a statistical significance of 21σ, the highest significance to date. We examine the TSZ maps for potential contaminants, including cosmic infrared background and radio sources, finding that cosmic infrared background has a substantial impact on our measurements and must be taken into account in our analysis. We use the cross-correlation measurements to test different feedback models. In particular, we model the TSZ using several different pressure profile models calibrated against hydrodynamical simulations. Our analysis marginalizes over redshift uncertainties, shear calibration biases, and intrinsic alignment effects. We also marginalize over Ωm and σ8 using Planck or DES priors. We find that the data prefer the model with a low amplitude of the pressure profile at small scales, compatible with a scenario with strong active galactic nuclei feedback and ejection of gas from the inner part of the halos. When using a more flexible model for the shear profile, constraints are weaker, and the data cannot discriminate between different baryonic prescriptions.

Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photons scatter off the free-electron gas in galaxies and clusters, allowing us to use the CMB as a backlight to probe the gas in and around low-redshift galaxies. The thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect, sourced by hot electrons in high-density environments, measures the thermal pressure of the target objects, shedding light on halo thermodynamics and galaxy formation and providing a path toward understanding the baryon distribution around cosmic structures. We use a combination of high-resolution CMB maps from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and photometric luminous red galaxy (LRG) catalogues from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) to measure the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich signal in four redshift bins from z = 0.4 to z = 1.2, with a combined detection significance of 19σ when stacking on the fiducial CMB Compton-y map. We discuss possible sources of contamination, finding that residual dust emission associated with the target galaxies is important and limits current analyses. We discuss several mitigation strategies and quantify the residual modelling uncertainty. We examine the stacked thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) signals for a sample of galaxy cluster candidates from the Spitzer-HETDEX Exploratory Large Area (SHELA) Survey, which are identified in combined optical and infrared SHELA data using the redMaPPer algorithm. We separate the clusters into three richness bins, with average photometric redshifts ranging from 0.70 to 0.80. The richest bin shows a clear temperature decrement at 148 GHz in the Atacama Cosmology Telescope data, which we attribute to the SZ effect. All richness bins show an increment at 220 GHz, which we attribute to dust emission from cluster galaxies. We correct for dust emission using stacked profiles from Herschel Stripe 82 data, and allow for synchrotron emission using stacked profiles created by binning source fluxes from NVSS data. We see dust emission in all three richness bins, but can only confidently detect the SZ decrement in the highest richness bin, finding M500 = 8.7+−1173 × 1013M. Neglecting the correction for dust depresses the inferred mass by 26 percent, indicating a partial fill-in of the SZ decrement from thermal dust and synchrotron emission by the cluster member galaxies. We compare our corrected SZ masses to two redMaPPer mass-richness scaling relations and find that the SZ mass is lower than predicted by the richness. We discuss possible explanations for this discrepancy, and note that the SHELA richnesses may differ from previous richness measurements due to the inclusion of IR data in redMaPPer. Standard ChIP-seq peak calling pipelines seek to differentiate biochemically reproducible signals of individual genomic elements from background noise. However, reproducibility alone does not imply functional regulation (e.g., enhancer activation, alternative splicing). Here we present a general-purpose, interpretable machine learning method: signed iterative random forests (siRF), which we use to infer regulatory interactions among transcription factors and functional binding signatures surrounding enhancer elements in Drosophila melanogaster. Observations of the millimeter sky contain valuable information on a number of signals, including the blackbody cosmic microwave background (CMB), Galactic emissions, and the Compton-y distortion due to the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (tSZ) effect. Extracting new insight into cosmological and astrophysical questions often requires combining multi-wavelength observations to spectrally isolate one component. In this work, we present a new arcminute-resolution Compton-y map, which traces out the line-of-sight-integrated electron pressure, as well as maps of the CMB in intensity and E-mode polarization, across a third of the sky (around 13,000 sq. deg.). We produce these through a joint analysis of data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) Data Release 4 and 6 at frequencies of roughly 93, 148, and 225 GHz, together with data from the Planck satellite at frequencies between 30 GHz and 545 GHz. We present detailed verification of an internal linear combination pipeline implemented in a needlet frame that allows us to efficiently suppress Galactic contamination and account for spatial variations in the ACT instrument noise. These maps provide a significant advance, in noise levels and resolution, over the existing Planck component-separated maps and will enable a host of science goals including studies of cluster and galaxy astrophysics, inferences of the cosmic velocity field, primordial non-Gaussianity searches, and gravitational lensing reconstruction of the CMB. © 2023, CC BY.

We present cosmological constraints from a gravitational lensing mass map covering 9400 deg2 reconstructed from measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) made by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) from 2017 to 2021. In combination with measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO, from SDSS and 6dF) and big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), we obtain the amplitude of matter fluctuations σ8 = 0.819 ± 0.015 at 1.8% precision, S8 ≡ σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5 = 0.840 ± 0.028 and the Hubble constant H0 = (68.3 ± 1.1) km s−1 Mpc−1 at 1.6% precision. A joint constraint with CMB lensing measured by the Planck satellite yields even more precise values: σ8 = 0.812 ± 0.013, S8 ≡ σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5 = 0.831 ± 0.023 and H0 = (68.1 ± 1.0) km s−1 Mpc−1. These measurements are in excellent agreement with ΛCDM-model extrapolations from the CMB anisotropies measured by Planck. To compare these ACT CMB lensing constraints to those from the KiDS, DES, and HSC galaxy surveys, we revisit those data sets with a uniform set of assumptions, and find S8 from all three surveys are lower than that from ACT+Planck lensing by varying levels ranging from 1.7–2.1σ. These results motivate further measurements and comparison, not just between the CMB anisotropies and galaxy lensing, but also between CMB lensing probing z ∼ 0.5 − 5 on mostly-linear scales and galaxy lensing at z ∼ 0.5 on smaller scales. We combine our CMB lensing measurements with CMB anisotropy data to constrain extensions of ΛCDM, limiting the sum of the neutrino masses to ∑ mν k Λ = 0.68 ± 0.01. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration recently published the first images of the supermassive black holes in the cores of the Messier 87 and Milky Way galaxies. These observations have provided a new means to study supermassive black holes and probe physical processes occurring in the strong-field regime. We review the prospects of future observations and theoretical studies of supermassive black hole systems with the next-generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT), which will greatly enhance the capabilities of the existing EHT array. These enhancements will open up several previously inaccessible avenues of investigation, thereby providing important new insights into the properties of supermassive black holes and their environments. This review describes the current state of knowledge for five key science cases, summarising the unique challenges and opportunities for fundamental physics investigations that the ngEHT will enable. We present geometrical and physical optics simulation results for the Simons Observatory Large Aperture Telescope. This work was developed as part of the general design process for the telescope;allowing us to evaluate the impact of various design choices on performance metrics and potential systematic effects. The primary goal of the simulations was to evaluate the final design of the reflectors and the cold optics which are now being built. We describe non-sequential ray tracing used to inform the design of the cold optics, including absorbers internal to each optics tube. We discuss ray tracing simulations of the telescope structure that allow us to determine geometries that minimize detector loading and mitigate spurious near-field effects that have not been resolved by the internal baffling. We also describe physical optics simulations, performed over a range of frequencies and field locations, that produce estimates of monochromatic far field beam patterns which in turn are used to gauge general optical performance. We present measurements of the radial profiles of the mass and galaxy number density around Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ)-selected clusters using both weak lensing and galaxy counts. The clusters are selected from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) Data Release 5 (DR5) and the galaxies from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 3 dataset. With signal-to-noise of 62 (43) for galaxy (weak lensing) profiles over scales of about 0.2 – 20h–1 Mpc, these are the highest precision measurements for SZ-selected clusters to date. Because SZ selection closely approximates mass selection, these measurements enable several tests of theoretical models of the mass and light distribution around clusters. Our main findings are: 1. The splashback feature is detected at a consistent location in both the mass and galaxy profiles and its location is consistent with predictions of cold dark matter N-body simulations. 2. The full mass profile is also consistent with the simulations;hence it can constrain alternative dark matter models that modify the mass distribution of clusters. 3. The shapes of the galaxy and lensing profiles are remarkably similar for our sample over the entire range of scales, from well inside the cluster halo to the quasilinear regime. This can be used to constrain processes such as quenching and tidal disruption that alter the galaxy distribution inside the halo, and scale-dependent features in the transition regime outside the halo. We measure the dependence of the profile shapes on the galaxy sample, redshift and cluster mass. We extend the Diemer & Kravtsov model for the cluster profiles to the linear regime using perturbation theory and show that it provides a good match to the measured profiles. We also compare the measured profiles to predictions of the standard halo model and simulations that include hydrodynamics.
