This innovative practice full paper finds that story-telling through animatronics can offer a combination of creativity and engineering in order to engage students in an inquiry-based approach to STEM learning. Animatronics is the art and science of bringing a story to life through robotic puppetry. Typically reserved for trained engineers with ample resources, animatronics can be an expressive yet inaccessible medium. We aim to allow students to write, create, and perform an animatronic story, learning valuable technical skills along the way. Our study, which took place over the course of eight weeks, investigates the use of our Paper Animatronics Kit in a Grade 2 and Grade 6 classroom, following the progression of their creative writing, animatronic building, and mentoring processes. We present results of our qualitative analysis of student and teacher interviews and group discussions. © 2024 IEEE.

As Large Language Models (LLMs) gain in popularity, it is important to understand how novice programmers use them and the effect they have on learning to code. We present the results of a thematic analysis on a data set from 33 learners, aged 10-17, as they independently learned Python by working on 45 code-authoring tasks with access to an AI Code Generator based on OpenAI Codex. We explore several important questions related to how learners used LLM-based AI code generators, and provide an analysis of the properties of the written prompts and the resulting AI generated code. Specifically, we explore (A) the context in which learners use Codex, (B) what learners are asking from Codex in terms of syntax and logic, (C) properties of prompts written by learners in terms of relation to task description, language, clarity, and prompt crafting patterns, (D) properties of the AI-generated code in terms of correctness, complexity, and accuracy, and (E) how learners utilize AI-generated code in terms of placement, verification, and manual modifications. Furthermore, our analysis reveals four distinct coding approaches when writing code with an AI code generator: AI Single Prompt, where learners prompted Codex once to generate the entire solution to a task; AI Step-by-Step, where learners divided the problem into parts and used Codex to generate each part; Hybrid, where learners wrote some of the code themselves and used Codex to generate others; and Manual coding, where learners wrote the code themselves. Our findings reveal consistently positive trends between learners’ utilization of the Hybrid coding approach and their post-test evaluation scores, while showing consistent negative trends between the AI Single Prompt and the post-test evaluation scores. We propose a 3D object construction methodology built on face-loop modeling operations. Our Face Extrusion Quad (FEQ) meshes, have a well designed face-loop structure similar to artist crafted 3D models. Furthermore, we define a construction graph which encodes a sequence of primitive extrude/collapse and bridge/separate operations that operate on admissible face-loops. We show that FEQs are imbued with a meaningful face-loop induced shape skeleton, part segmentation, plausible construction history, and possess the many advantages of extrusion-based 3D modeling. Our evaluation is threefold: we show a gallery of challenging 3D models transformed to FEQs with compelling face-loop structure; we showcase the potential of an inherent construction graph, using FEQ-based cut-paste and inverse modeling applications; and we demonstrate the impact of various algorithmic and parameter related choices for FEQ modeling and application.

Spatialized vibrotactile feedback systems deliver tactile information by placing multiple vibrotactile actuators on the body. As increasing numbers of actuators are required to adequately convey information in complicated applications, haptic designers find it difficult to create such systems due to limited scalability of existing toolkits. We propose VibraForge, an open-source vibrotactile toolkit that supports up to 128 vibrotactile actuators. Each actuator is encapsulated within a self-contained vibration unit and driven by its own microcontroller. By leveraging a chain-connection method, each unit receives independent vibration commands from a control unit, with fine-grained control over intensity and frequency. We also designed a GUI Editor to expedite the authoring of spatial vibrotactile patterns. Technical evaluation showed that vibration units reliably reproduced audio waveforms with low-latency and high-bandwidth data communication. Case studies of a phonemic tactile display, virtual reality fitness training, and drone teleoperation demonstrated the potential usage of VibraForge within different domains. The very process of illustration itself challenges our mathematical understanding and forces us to answer questions we may not have posed otherwise. It can even make mathematics an experimental science, in which immersive exploration of data and representations drive the cycle of problem, conjecture, and proof. Today, modern technology for the first time places the production of highly complicated models within the reach of many individual mathematicians. Researches on the organization and implementation of the project management of selection processes and the development of adequate models of interaction of many parameters of the microclimate of the technological process of raising the poultry meat breeds in industrial premises have been carried out. Actuality of the researches has been confirmed, the analysis and a choice of interaction of parameters research methods are proved. It is shown that the use of physical modeling with the involvement of the corresponding experimental equipment and the use of the experimental results obtained for geometric modeling on the basis of applied multidimensional geometry are effective. The significance of the study is in the established features of the nature of the heat exchange of air in the premises in view of the effectiveness of growing products and in various types of farming. The method of measuring the temperature in the room chosen in the process of geometric modeling allows to cover with lines of the same temperature all points of the living space of the production premises in which the bird is *** proposed method of research can be practically adapted for the processing of the results of studies on the microclimate parameters of agro-industrial objects of various intended uses. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

We present the Zero Resource Speech Challenge 2019, which proposes to build a speech synthesizer without any text or phonetic labels: hence, TTS without T (text-to-speech without text). We provide raw audio for a target voice in an unknown language (the Voice dataset), but no alignment, text or labels. Participants must discover subword units in an unsupervised way (using the Unit Discovery dataset) and align them to the voice recordings in a way that works best for the purpose of synthesizing novel utterances from novel speakers, similar to the target speaker's voice. We describe the metrics used for evaluation, a baseline system consisting of unsupervised subword unit discovery plus a standard TTS system, and a topline TTS using gold phoneme transcriptions.
