This paper presents a novel framework for efficiently propagating the stroke-based user edits to the regions with similar colors and locations in high resolution images and videos. Our framework is based on the key observation that the edit propagation intrinsically can also be achieved by utilizing recently proposed edge-preserving filters. Therefore, instead of adopting the traditional global optimization which may involve a time-consuming solution, our algorithm propagates edits with the aid of the edge-preserve filters. Such a propagation scheme has low computational complexity and supports multiple kinds of strokes for more flexible user interactions. Further, our method can be easily and efficiently implemented in GPU. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and user-friendliness of our approach.

Engineering and technology schools, departments and students are encouraged to explore a capstone design project option that possesses significant, far-reaching implications for international humanitarian application. An Indianapolis, Indiana-based non-profit organization called the "Institute of Affordable Transportation (IAT)" engages young engineering and technology talent through service-based capstone projects to design and develop a class of transportation known as a Basic Utility Vehicle (BUY). The IAT's mission is to improve living standards and enable economic growth in the Third World by creating a simple vehicte that can be assembled almost anywhere, by almost anyone. To propagate this initiative, the IAT hosts an annual collegiate BUY competition that tests student-designed prototype BUV's. Ultimately, the student efforts from these competitions will help provide mobility, freedom and economic hope to people in rural areas of devebping countries. This paper introduces the organization that is the genesis of this initiative, gives an overview of the first two IAT collegiate competitions (including examples of student-designed and other vehicles), reflects on the academic benefits to participating students and faculty and culminates with an invitation to academic institutions to become involved in this life-changing initiative.
We examine a class of adaptive sampling techniques employed in image synthesis and show that those commonly used for efficient anti-aliasing are statistically biased. This bias is dependent upon the image function bei...

Many manufacturing firms in today's economy are reluctant to engage their design personnel in costly, difficult to operate 3D CAD packages. While the attributes of designing in 3D are numerous and beneficial, committing to a high-end design software package often seems unjustifiable, especially when only a few new designs are required. An extremely attractive alternative to this dilemma is the integration of a powerful and innovative 3D modeling software called Rhinoceros®, or Rhino® for short. While costing substantially less than most 3D modeling programs, Rhino supplies an impressive array of advanced capabilities not found on many of the most powerful design software's on the market. Though not considered a parametric or feature-based modeler, Rhino often supplements these costly packages to accomplish complex surfacing challenges. This paper introduces this incredible program as it applies to the motor manufacturing industry and highlights the ease-of-use and incredible power of this modeling and presentation software. Additionally, an overview of different types of 3D modeling software is given in contextual reference to where this product may fit into a firm's design initiatives.

We present a clean algorithm for determining whether a ray intersects a triangle. The algorithm translates the origin of the ray and then changes the base of that vector which yields a vector (t u v)T, where t is the distance to the plane in which the triangle lies and (u, v) represents the coordinates inside the triangle. One advantage of this method is that the plane equation need not be computed on the fly nor be stored, which can amount to significant memory savings for triangle meshes. As we found our method to be comparable in speed to previous methods, we believe it is the fastest ray/triangle intersection routine for triangles which do not have precomputed plane equations.
Acceleration structures are key to high performance parallel ray tracing. Maximizing performance requires configuring the degrees of freedom (e.g., construction parameters) these data structures expose. Whether a para...

In this paper, we discuss the use of computergraphics techniques to model and explain the structures commonly observed in color histograms of images. This includes an accurate simulation of the physical reflection and transport behavior of light energy within 3D environments, the precise modeling of an image capturing system, and an interactive visualization module to display color histograms. Based on the fundamental rendering equation that describes light reflection and transport in the 3D world, we classify the color histogram structures of color images, and relate them to various physical components in image formation, including scene illumination, material reflectance properties, and the surface geometry of objects. We further show how these histogram structures can be effected by the artifacts caused by the limitation of image capturing systems. Our results demonstrate that the use of accurate simulation procedures under a precisely controlled computer graphic environment can clearly illustrate the causes of the structures observed, and can provide unique insights and explanations of image formation.
