Interactive computergraphics programs have been developed to permit the clinical application of a new method of analysis of craniofacial discrepancies and its use for diagnosis and testing alternative treatment plans. The validity of the method has been tested statistically, and the programs have been used to formulate treatment plans for a number of orthodontic patients. Example results from the treatment planning are included.

An improved mathematical description of pseudorotation in five- and six-memhered rings is presented. This procedure allows the position of the ring atoms to be computed at all points on the pseudorotational pathway without significant geometrical distortion, bond lengths remaining constant to within ± 2A Å and endocyclic valence angles to within ± 2 Å. The routine has been incorporated into an interactive molecular modeling system, allowing real-time display of the pseudorotation process in molecules of biological interest and calculation of associated conformational energies and NMR coupling constants.

The Programmer's Hierarchical Interactive graphics System (PHIGS), currently under development by ISO, is a specification of a set of functions for device-independent computergraphics programming, supporting dynamic interaction and hierarchically organised graphical data. A central aspect of an implementation of a system such as PHIGS is the provision of a compact and efficient representation for the graphical entities involved. This paper describes a centralised graphical database for KRT 3 , an experimental hierarchical graphics system based on PHIGS. It presents a discussion of the issues involved, and the experience gained, in the practical design and implementation of a database for hierarchical graphical data. A novel aspect of the design is that the database may be simultaneously shared by several application programs.

The geometries and relative energies for different tautomers of the nucleic bases adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine and uracil were calculated with full geometry optimization using the AM1 method. For each nucleic base, the tautomer found by experiment is also the most stable one, as predicted by AM1.

Following the establishment of GKS as the first international standard for computergraphics, two new standards, GKS-3D and PHIGS, are emerging which cater for three-dimensional graphics. In order to display a 3-D object, a description of how it is to be viewed must be given. GKS-3D and PHIGS provide a viewing pipeline to generate the parallel or perspective view required. This paper describes in detail the functionality and an implementation of the GKS-3D/PHIGS viewing pipeline.

The paper presents a B-spline Boolean-sum approach to the representation of Coons-Gordon-type surfaces;a bivariate B-spline interpolant can be constructed from an adequate superposition of univariate B-spline interpolants by the Boolean sum being formed in the same way as are Coons-Gordon surfaces. Then, a possible way of extending the B-spline Boolean-sum approach to NURBS is discussed for the approximation of Coons-Gordon-type surfaces.
