Nowadays, the process of change detection is regarded as an outstanding way for urban planning and design. The major concern of this paper is to investigate the non-stationary character of multi-temporal time series. To overcome this problem, we propose an adaptive multiplicative decomposition of non-stationary multi-temporal satellite image, which allows to decompose the series into three components: trend, seasonal and random, to properly model the evolution of land cover. We carried several experiments to validate our approach based on Landsat images covering the region of “Tres Cantos-Madrid” in Spain. The obtained results show the effectiveness of our proposed method comparing to some conventional methods.

A text line detection method based on wavelet transformation and mutation analysis is proposed in this paper. First the character density image is acquired from the input document image by the project function with strips, and then the density image is analyzed by wavelet transformation where the Gaussian or its derivative function is used as the wavelet basis. The local peak positions indicate the line texture which will be continuous and single pixel. Because of the statistical properties of project function and wavelet transformation of mutations signal detection, this algorithm is not sensitive to noise and warped distortions. Experiments show that this algorithm is accurate and robust. © 2013 IEEE.

Traditionally stereo visual odometry algorithms estimate the robot's motion by maximizing the conditional probability of the 3D correspondences between two sets of 3D feature point positions, which were previously obtained from two consecutive stereo image pairs captured by a stereo video camera. As an alternative, in this paper a monocular visual odometry algorithm is proposed, which estimates the robot's motion by maximizing the conditional probability of the frame to frame intensity differences at observation points between two consecutive images captured by a monocular video camera. Experimental results with synthetic and real image sequences revealed highly accurate and reliable estimates, respectively. Additionally, it seems to be an excellent candidate for mobile robot missions where space, weight and power supply are really very limited.

With widespread of the Internet as well as the numerous applications that involve audio signals and systems, the issue of ownership proof become imperative. In this paper, we present an audio watermark scheme that is based on Empirical Mode Decomposition and Hilbert Huang Transform. The audio signal is decomposed into several mono-component signals or Intrinsic Mode Functions to serve as the addressee for watermark. The watermark is a pseudo random number which is added to the highest and lowest Intrinsic Mode Functions of the signal to generate what we call the modified IMFs which is in turn added to the remaining IMFs to produce the watermarked signal. Our experimental results show that the proposed method is robust against signal processing attacks such as MP3, time scale modification, resizing, and others. The obtained results meet the recommended imperceptibility signal to noise ratio.

Architectural elements are the components and details of buildings. Their unique set, combination, design, construction technique form the architectural style of buildings. Building facade classification by architectural styles is viewed as a task of classifying separate architectural structural elements. In the scope of building facade architectural style classification the current paper targets the problem of classification of Gothic and Baroque architectural elements called tracery, pediment and balustrade. Since certain gradient directions dominate on the shape of each architectural element, discrimination between dominating gradients means classification of architectural elements and thus architectural styles. We use local features to describe gradient directions. Our approach is based on clustering and learning of local features and yields a high classification rate.

Requirement for a person to face a camera for face identification process may no longer be necessary if the face recognition system is robust against variation of facial pose. In this paper, we proposed a face recognition method which remains reliable even in very large head pose variations. In this method, feature from local regions of face are extracted after employing both discrete cosine transform and discrete wavelet transform. Learning strategy is then applied to infer the relationship between face in a given pose and its frontal view. Results we obtained are very promising considering that our proposed method solely relies on a single gallery image. We also demonstrated the high performance of our method in a condition whereby the face images are of low-resolution quality.

Automatic image annotation has been an active research topic in the last decade due to its potentially large impact on image retrieval, object recognition and image understanding. Many approaches have been proposed for image annotation in recent years. The most influential annotation model is relevance model, whose representative algorithm is Cross-Media Relevance Model (CMRM). In this paper, to overcome the shortcomings of the original CMRM, we propose improved CMRM. In the improved CMRM, the annotation word distribution is estimated using binary probability, the significance of blob is discriminately depicted using TF-IDF (term frequency-inverse document frequency) schemes, and the similarity measurement of blob is based on blob and continuousvalued feature vector. The experimental results on the standard Corel5K dataset show that our proposed approach outperforms the original CMRM by about 111% and 73% in terms of F1 and N+ measures respectively. The improved CMRM can get better performance in specific domains such as cultural heritage and special necessities digitization for ethnic minorities. © 2012 ICIC International.

This paper proposes a method to predict the effect of Bevacizumab therapy on Glioblastoma Multiform (GBM) tumors. The prediction is critical for effective treatment planning. The proposed method is developed and evaluated using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and post-contrast T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance images (pc-T1-MRI) of 14 patients with GBM tumors gathered before and after the treatment. First, the proposed method calculates diffusion anisotropy indices (DAI) of all voxels in the brain. These diffusion anisotropy indices are Fractional Anisotropy (FA), Mean Diffusivity (MD), Relative Anisotropy (RA), and Volume Ratio (VR). Then, it registers post-treatment pc-T1-MRI and pre-treatment DAI maps to pre-treatment pc-T1-MRI. Next, it uses a thresholding method to segment the tumor from pc-T1-MRI studies. Comparing Gd-enhanced voxels of the pre- and post-treatment pc-T1-MRI, the DAIs of the tumor are labeled based on their response to the treatment. The voxels of 7 patients are randomly selected to train 4 classifiers (ANN, SVM, KNN, and ANFIS) and then all voxels of the other 7 patients are used to test them. For each classifier, four performance measures (sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and accuracy) are calculated. Experimental results show that the ANFIS is more accurate than the other classifiers in predicting the treatment response. © 2012 IEEE.

In this work, we present a device for cell manipulation and separation using travelling wave dielectophoretic (twDEP) force. The device consists of microchamber and 16 parallel electrode array controlled by four-phase signal. The dielectrophoretic PDMS chamber and Cr/Au parallel electrode array were fabricated by standard microfabrication techniques. The driving signals for the twDEP system are produced by a specially designed four-phase signal generator. The signal generator can be operated in a fixed or ±90° phase shift mode with varying frequency, applied voltage and shift interval. In addition, the signal conditions can be store to and retrieved from a built-in database. The twDEP system was tested with polystyrene microspheres suspension in de-ionized water and red blood cells in D-mannitol solution. Cells responded to the electric field in various mechanisms depending on the applied signals conditions. The results showed that the twDEP force occurred when the applied signals were 10 V (50 kHz-700 kHz) and 7 V (30 kHz-1 MHz) for 4.5 μm and 10 μm microspheres respectively. The mixed solution containing equal amount of 4.5 and 10 μm microspheres were used for separation test. Under the signal conditions for 10 μm microspheres, the microspheres were moved under twDEP force while the smaller microspheres were attached to the electrodes. Therefore, the twDEP device can successfully manipulate and separate the microspheres of different sizes, and it can be further applied for cells selection.

The accuracy and repeatability of computer aided cervical vertebra landmarking (CACVL) were investigated in cephalogram.120 adolescents (60 boys,60 girls) aged from 9.1 to 17.2 years old were randomly ***-seven landmarks from the second to fifth cervical vertebrae on the lat-eral cephalogram were *** this study,the system of CACVL was developed and used to iden-tify and calculate the landmarks by fast marching method and parabolic curve *** accuracy and repeatability in CACVL group were compared with those in two manual landmarking groups [orthodon-tic experts (OE) group and orthodontic novices (ON) group].The results showed that,as for the accu-racy,there was no significant difference between CACVL group and OE group no matter in x-axis or y-axis (P>0.05),but there was significant difference between CACVL group and ON group,as well as OE group and ON group in both axes (P<0.05).As for the repeatability,CACVL group was more reli-able than OE group and ON group in both *** is concluded that CACVL has the same or higher ac-curacy,better repeatability and less workload than manual landmarking ***’s reliable for cervi-cal parameters identification on the lateral cephalogram and cervical vertebral maturation prediction in orthodontic practice and research.
