We present the Zero Resource Speech Challenge 2019, which proposes to build a speech synthesizer without any text or phonetic labels: hence, TTS without T (text-to-speech without text). We provide raw audio for a target voice in an unknown language (the Voice dataset), but no alignment, text or labels. Participants must discover subword units in an unsupervised way (using the Unit Discovery dataset) and align them to the voice recordings in a way that works best for the purpose of synthesizing novel utterances from novel speakers, similar to the target speaker's voice. We describe the metrics used for evaluation, a baseline system consisting of unsupervised subword unit discovery plus a standard TTS system, and a topline TTS using gold phoneme transcriptions. Ongoing and future climate change driven expansion of aeroallergen-producing plant species comprise a major human health problem across Europe and elsewhere. There is an urgent need to produce accurate, temporally dynamic maps at the continental level, especially in the context of climate uncertainty. This study aimed to restore missing daily ragweed pollen data sets for Europe, to produce phenological maps of ragweed pollen, resulting in the most complete and detailed high-resolution ragweed pollen concentration maps to date. To achieve this, we developed two statistical procedures, a Gaussian method (GM) and deep learning (DL) for restoring missing daily ragweed pollen data sets, based on the plant’s reproductive and growth (phenological, pollen production and frost-related) characteristics. DL model performances were consistently better for estimating annual total pollen concentrations than those of the GM approach. These are the first published modeled maps using altitude correction and phenology to recover missing pollen information. We created a web page (http://***/), including daily ragweed pollen concentration data sets of the stations examined and their restored daily data, allowing one to upload newly measured or recovered daily data. Generation of these maps provides a means to track pollen impacts in the context of climatic shifts, identify geographical regions with high pollen exposure, determine areas of future vulnerability, apply spatially-explicit mitigation measures and prioritize management interventions. © 2023, The Authors. Recently wireless Networks-on-Chip (WiNoCs) have been proposed to overcome the scalability and performance limitations of traditional multi-hop wired NoC architectures. However, the adaptation of wireless technology for on-chip communication is still in its infancy. Consequently, several challenges such as simulation and design tools that consider the technological constraints imposed by the wireless channel are yet to be addressed. To this end, in this paper, we propose and efficient channel model for WiNoCs which takes into account practical issues and constraints of the propagation medium, such as transmission frequency, operating temperature, ambient pressure and distance between the on-chip antennas. The proposed channel model demonstrates that total path loss of the wireless channel in WiNoCs suffers from not only dielectric propagation loss (DPL) but also molecular absorption attenuation (MAA) which reduces the reliability of the system. © 2016 IEEE.

On the nanocommunications at THz band in graphene-enabled wireless network-on-chip

One of the main challenges towards the growing computation-intensive applications with scalable bandwidth requirement is the deployment of a dense number of on-chip cores within a chip package. To this end, this paper investigates the Wireless Network-on-Chip (WiNoC), which is enabled by graphene-based nanoantennas (GNAs) in Terahertz frequency band. We first develop a channel model between the GNAs taking into account the practical issues of the propagation medium, such as transmission frequency, operating temperature, ambient pressure, and distance between the GNAs. In the Terahertz band, not only dielectric propagation loss but also molecular absorption attenuation (MAA) caused by various molecules and their isotopologues within the chip package constitutes the signal transmission loss. We further propose an optimal power allocation to achieve the channel capacity. The proposed channel model shows that the MAA significantly degrades the performance at certain frequency ranges compared to the conventional channel model, even when the GNAs are very closely located. More specifically, at transmission frequency of 1 THz, the channel capacity of the proposed model is shown to be much lower than that of the conventional model over the whole range of temperature and ambient pressure of up to 26.8% and 25%, respectively. To meet the performance and scalability demands of the fast-paced technological growth towards exascale and Big-Data processing with the performance bottleneck of conventional metal based interconnects, alternative interconnect fabrics such as inhomogeneous three dimensional integrated Network-on-Chip (3D NoC) has emanated as a cost-effective solution for emerging multi-core design. However, these interconnects trade-off optimized performance for cost by restricting the number of area and power hungry 3D routers. Consequently, in this paper, we propose a low-latency adaptive router with a low-complexity single-cycle bypassing mechanism to alleviate the performance degradation due to the slow 2D routers in inhomogeneous 3D NoCs. By combining the low-complexity bypassing technique with adaptive routing, the proposed router is able to balance the traffic in the network to reduce the average packet latency under various traffic loads. Simulation shows that, the proposed router can reduce the average packet delay by an average of 45% in 3D NoCs.

In wireless communication, there exists a phenomenon know as `multipath'. This phenomenon is considered as a disadvantage because it causes interference. The multipath phenomenon results in an antenna receiving two or more signals from the same sent signal from different paths. This paper considers them as redundant copies of the transmitted data and utilises them to improve the performance of forward error correction (FEC) codes without extra redundancy, in order to improve data transmission reliability and increase the bit rate over wireless communication channels. The system was evaluated in bit error rate (BER) and used Bose, Ray-Chaudhuri and Hocquenghem (BCH) and Reed-Solomon (RS) codes as FEC. The results showed that the utilisation of the multipath improves the performance of FEC. Furthermore, the performance of FEC codes had t 1 error correction capability and employed the multipath is better than FEC codes have t 2 error correction capability and without the multipath, where t 1 2. Consequently, the bit rate is increased, and communication reliability is improved without extra redundancy.

Over the last years, Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) technologies have seen a remarkable grow up. Although this field has been researched for many years and different projects have investigated and proposed AAL platforms with a rich set of functionality, the current market situation still favors isolated solutions. A possible reason is that those platforms are too complex to be easily setup and maintained. Also, resource sharing is possible between services, but not between platforms. A promising alternative is provided by the cloud computing approach which integrates common services in a shared way. Thus, we propose to use an AAL platform as Platform-as-a-Service in the cloud to offer all functionalities of AAL platforms to services in the cloud while being able to connect to platforms running in each home. We discuss different aspects of this approach and propose a simple verification scenario. An exemplary adoption is discussed for the platform universAAL. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

This paper is synopsis of a recently proposed solution for treating patients who suffer from Phantom Limb Pain (PLP). The underpinning approach of this research and development project is based on an extension of "mirror box" therapy which has had some promising results in pain reduction. An outline of an immersive individually tailored environment giving the patient a virtually realised limb presence, as a means to pain reduction is provided. The virtual 3D holographic environment is meant to produce immersive, engaging and creative environments and tasks to encourage and maintain patients' interest, an important aspect in two of the more challenging populations under consideration (over-60s and war veterans). The system is hoped to reduce PLP by more than 3 points on an 11 point Visual Analog Scale (VAS), when a score less than 3 could be attributed to distraction alone. On the informatics and the software sides the questions of practical security are linked to the unstructured information processing algorithms applicable for the video array frames obtained by cross platform registration systems. Compression solutions become crucially important when the temporal evolution of the video stream exceeds the traffic capacity of the communication network. The basic image processing approach we exploited is to maintain of the highest resolution degree for the main part of the object we survey (for example, a man's face or figure) whilst minimizing the information traffic from the image background by its artificial substitution with a homogeneous color filling. This method allowed us to obtain a significant compression rate (up to 7000). © 2012 WIT Press.
