Home-based pill dispensers are one of many devices that are designed to aid medication management and improve adherence. Such devices are common in the United States of America but not widely exploited in Asia. We designed a home-based pill dispenser known as MedMate. Users' perceived acceptance of a new technology such as MedMate affects its actual usage. Thus, we created a paper prototype of MedMate to get feedbacks from users early in the development cycle. We conducted a user study consisting of a questionnaire adapted from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), followed by an interview to gain more in-depth understanding of the users' perceived acceptance and more importantly their concerns regarding MedMate. The results of the user study show that the participants were positive about its usefulness and ease-of-use. More than two third of the participants were willing to accept and use the pill dispenser in their homes but with some concerns. Their main concerns include affordability, portability, reliability, safety and security, privacy, maintenance, durability, efficiency of reminder, accessibility and capability in handling different forms of medication. These findings resonate with our prior studies on the acceptance of other home-based medical devices such as mobile ECG-measuring devices. Thus, most of these factors can be extended for consideration when designing other home-based medical devices. © 2012 IEEE.

In the development of an effective medication management system to improve medication adherence, the challenge of flexibly dispensing of medications of multiple sizes and shapes was encountered. It is found that most of the medication dispensers in the market, as well as the feeding and orienting mechanisms in manufacturing sector, are customized to be operated with objects of specific size. In view of the inflexibility of those mechanisms, we proposed a novel method to handle and singulate medications of different sizes and shapes. A three dimensional adjustable cavity is designed as a carrier to separate and dispense one pill at a time. Rotational reciprocating vibration is then designed to provide centrifugal effect to the objects in hopper, in order to assist the singulation. An angle inclination test has been performed on the prototype built to investigate the optimum inclination of the feeding hopper. Preliminary testing has shown propitious results for dispensing round shape tablets of various sizes. The prototype built validated the concept of three dimensional adjustable cavity as a novel singulation technique. The mechanism is not only restricted to the dispensing of various sizes of pills, but has the potential to be implemented in dispensing or feeding of other objects in applications like vending machine, manufacturing system and etc. © 2012 IEEE.

Users' experience of interacting with a robot is mediated by the context that characterizes the co-existence of the human and the robot. However, it has been difficult to study the role of social context in human-robot interaction (HRI) in experimental settings. In this research, we evaluated how social context influenced user acceptance of social robots in a controlled experiment. Using video scenarios with low- and high-level of contextual information, we examined the role of social context in modulating user acceptance. We found that user acceptance of the robot was contingent on the social context, and that information related to social context influenced the amount of user feedback generated by the users concerning the characteristics of social robots. © 2012 IEEE.

Medication non-adherence is a major problem to all stakeholders, posing escalating costs and risks to patients as well as substantial economic burden to the health care industry. Solutions that attempt to broaden the functions and capabilities of medication management have hitherto been employing a narrow-focused approach, often failing to address the multitude of factors that leads to the phenomena. In this paper, we present an experimental comparison of user attitude towards medication adherence using a single-focused versus a multifaceted personalized medication management system that has been implemented with elements of motivational and educational strategies. The findings from this research suggest evidence of the significance and usefulness of applying a multifaceted approach, in particular, the implementation of motivational and educational strategies in the design of a personalized medication management system in addressing medication non-adherence.

Medicine adherence is a growing problem that affects not only patients but also the healthcare industry. In this short paper, we represent a brief overview of the severity of medicine non-adherence, especially to elderly patients of chronic conditions, and the reasons behind the phenomenon. A generic survey of the existing methods of interventions to aid in medicine adherence is then discussed, followed by the identification of the lacking areas that such interventions could not address. The need for a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates features of personalized medicine management towards addressing the problem is then explored, investigating the possible solutions through the establishment of concordance and instilling behavioral changes in patients through education and motivational strategies. The paper will then focus on an ongoing research and development work in the form of a medicine dispenser which attempts to bring under a single platform the multifaceted approach to address medicine adherence and the benefits that ensue.

The present study investigated the use of visual trajectory and haptic force information in learning concepts involving force. Specifically, learning modules for instructing buoyant forces were developed for use with a computer monitor and a force feedback device. Students from an elementary school at the fourth and sixth grades were recruited to participate in the study. The students were separated into visual and visuohaptic groups to measure the possible benefits haptic feedback might provide as compared to the vision-alone condition. A 10-question content test was developed and administered before and after the learning activities. The pretest and posttest scores showed that all students benefited from the computer simulations. The visuohaptic group did not perform significantly better than the visual group. An important finding was that the fourth graders learned as much as the sixth graders, despite their younger age and little prior exposure to concepts such as density and volume, which are important for understanding buoyancy. Future work will design instructional and assessment materials that focus more on the haptic modality. © 2011 IEEE.

Production reconfiguration has been well recognized as an effective means of planning production processes for product families. The major challenge of production reconfiguration lies in the handling of numerous constraints associated with product and process variety. This paper develops a constraint satisfaction approach to deal with production reconfiguration. It introduces a domain model to capture the decision variables and a systematic procedure to tackle constraint identification, representation and evaluation. An industrial example of textile spindle is used to illustrate the feasibility and potential of the domain-based constraint satisfaction problem model for production reconfiguration. ©2010 IEEE.

Interactive node-link diagrams are useful for describing and exploring data relationships in many domains such as network analysis and transportation planning. We describe a multi-touch interaction technique set (IT set) that focuses on edge interactions for node-link diagrams. The set includes five techniques (TouchPlucking, TouchPinning, TouchStrum-ming, TouchBundling and PushLens) and provides the flexibility to combine them in either sequential or simultaneous actions in order to address edge congestion. © 2010 ACM.
