In this paper, we present a novel approach for a tighter integration of 3D modeling and physically-based simulation. Instead of modeling 3D objects as surface models, we use a volumetric subdivision representation. Volumetric modeling operations allow designing 3D objects in similar ways as with surface-based modeling tools. Encoding the volumetric information already in the design mesh drastically simplifies and speeds up the mesh generation process for simulation. The transition between design, simulation and back to design is consistent and computationally cheap. Since the subdivision and mesh generation can be expressed as a precomputable matrix-vector multiplication, iteration times can be greatly reduced compared to common modeling and simulation setups. Therefore, this approach is especially well suited for early-stage modeling or optimization use cases, where many geometric changes are made in a short time and their physical effect on the model has to be evaluated frequently. To test our approach, we created, simulated and adapted several 3D models. Additionally, we measured and evaluated the timings for generating and applying the matrices for different subdivision levels. For comparison, we also measured the tetrahedral meshing functionality offered by CGAL for similar numbers of elements. For changing topology, our implicit meshing approach proves to be up to 70 times faster than creating the tetrahedral mesh only based on the outer surface. Without changing the topology and by precomputing the matrices, we achieve a speed-up of up to 2800. © 2017 The Author(s) Eurographics Proceedings 2017 The Eurographics Association.

3D line skeletons are simplistic representations of a shape's topology which are used for a wide variety of geometry-processing tasks, including shape recognition, retrieval, and reconstruction. Numerous methods have been proposed to generate a skeleton from a given 3D shape. While mesh-based methods can exploit existing knowledge about the shape's topology and orientation, point-based techniques often resort to precomputed per-point normals to ensure robustness. In contrast, previously proposed techniques for unprocessed point clouds either exhibit inferior robustness or require expensive operations, which in turn increases computation time. In this paper, we present a new and highly efficient skeletonization approach for raw point cloud data, which produces overall competitive results compared to previous work, while exhibiting much lower computation times. Our algorithm performs robustly in the face of noisy and fragmented inputs, as they are usually obtained from real-world 3D scans. We achieve this by first transferring the input point cloud into a Gaussian mixture model (GMM), obtaining a more compact representation of the surface. Our method then iteratively projects a small subset of the points into local L1-medians, yielding a rough outline of the shape's skeleton. Finally, we present a new branch detection technique to obtain a coherent line skeleton from those projected points. We demonstrate the capabilities of our proposed method by extracting the line skeletons of a diverse selection of input shapes and evaluating their visual appearance as well as the efficiency compared to alternative state-of-the-art methods. © 2022 University of West Bohemia. Photometric multi-view 3D geometry reconstruction and material capture are important techniques for cultural heritage digitalization. Capturing images of artifacts with high resolution and high dynamic range and the possibility to store them losslessly enables future proof application of this data. As the images tend to consume immense amounts of storage, compression is essential for long time archiving. In this paper, we present a lossless image compression approach for multi-view and material reconstruction datasets with a strong focus on data created from cultural heritage digitalization. Our approach achieves compression rates of 2:1 compared against an uncompressed representation and 1.24:1 when compared against Gzip. © 2019 Eurographics Association.

Predictive statistical models are used in the area of adaptive user interfaces to model user behavior and to infer user information from interaction events in an implicit and non-intrusive way. This information constitutes the basis for tailoring the user interface to the needs of the individual user. Consequently, the user analysis process should model the user with information, which can be used in various systems to recognize user activities, intentions and roles to accomplish an adequate adaptation to the given user and his current task. In this paper we present the improved prediction algorithm KO*/19, which is able to recognize, beside interaction predictions, behavioral patterns for recognizing user activities. By means of this extension, the evaluation shows that the KO*/19-Algorithm improves the Mean Prediction Rank more than 19% compared to other well-established prediction algorithms. ©2010 IEEE.

When modeling in 3D CAD, architects often search for already existing 3D content to complete their own design, e.g. environmental models, furniture models or detailed window profiles. 3D models are normally indexed and accessed based on textual metadata. As this metadata is expensive to obtain, PROBADO3D aims to develop workflows and tools for semi-automatic indexing of 3D models. Another goal is the development of intuitive visual search and presentation interfaces that face the needs of architects looking for 3D content. PROBADO3D is a part of the PROBADO framework designed to support multimedia objects of different domains.

An important task in archaeological research is the comparison of painted motifs on ancient vessels and the analysis of their painting style. Ideally, the pottery objects are available as scanned 3D models, from which the painted surface can be unrolled and potential distortions minimized, so that the vase painting and its individual motifs can be directly inspected. Unfortunately, the percentage of digitally captured vessels is small compared to the large body of cataloged photographs. In this paper, we present a method that creates distortion-minimized unrollings of painted pottery surfaces directly from a small set of photographs. We achieve this by exploiting prior knowledge about the data, namely that most objects exhibit rotational symmetry and that strict guidelines were followed when capturing photographs of the ancient vases. Based on the distinctly visible object silhouettes in the photographs we are able to extract proxy geometries of the objects which we encode as per-view geometric maps. By stitching the single-view data, we obtain a combined map capturing the geometry and texture of the entire painted surface. This enables us to minimize typical projective distortions by elastic relaxation. Our pipeline works entirely in 2D image space, circumventing time-consuming 3D scans and surface reconstructions of (often inaccessible) vessels. Using a combination of CPU-based image processing and GPU-based relaxation, results are produced in only a few minutes. © 2021 The Eurographics Association.

We present a novel approach for efficient limit volume evaluation on Catmull-Clark (CC) subdivision solids. Although several analogies exist between subdivision surfaces and subdivision volumes, extending Stam’s limit evaluation technique from 2 to 3 dimensions is not straightforward, as irregularities and boundaries introduce new challenges in the volumetric case. We present new direct evaluation techniques for irregular volumetric topologies and boundary cells, which allow for calculating the limit of CC subdivision solids at arbitrary parameter values in constant time. Evaluation of limit points is a central aspect when using CC solids for applications such as simulation and multi-material additive manufacturing, or as a compact volumetric representation scheme for continuous scalar fields. We demonstrate that our approach is faster than existing evaluation techniques for every topological configuration or target parameter (u, v, w) that requires more than two local subdivision steps. © 2018 The Author(s).

Image segmentation (or masking) finds a very useful use case within 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage objects. The 3D reconstructions can be accelerated, reconstructing the object without any background noise. Conventional segmentation methods can calculate erroneous masks for certain objects and environments, which can lead to errors within the reconstruction: Parts of the 3D reconstruction may be missing or are incorrectly reconstructed, which contradicts adequate archiving. The automated iterative Multi-View Stereo (MVS) scanning process makes it necessary to obtain masks that reconstruct the object in the best possible way, regardless of the environment, the stabilizing mount, the color of the background and the object. In addition, it should not be necessary to tweak the best possible parameters for conventional masking procedures and to create masks manually. State-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) segmentation networks will be trained and applied to the MVS scans to verify the behavior of the associated 3D reconstructions and the automated iterative scanning process. Many artifacts of our archaeological heritage are preserved only in fragments. The reassembly of these parts to their original form is therefore an essential task for archaeologists. Our project aims at incorporating the intellect of many participants from the broad public in the solution of this complex task. To this end, we develop a web-based 3D environment, in which users can interactively and collaboratively reassemble virtual fragments of real-world artifacts, supported by computer-aided methods. Our primary research focus lies on identifying how to best design and setup such a system in order to maximize the collaboration efficiency. By participating in this open reassembly process, users can gain valuable insight into the archaeological task, thus raising awareness for our common cultural heritage in a multitude of people. © ISVR,2023 *** rights reserved

Existing visual surveillance systems typically require that human operators observe video streams from different cameras, which becomes infeasible if the number of observed cameras is ever increasing. In this paper, we present a new surveillance system that combines automatic video analysis (i.e., single person tracking and crowd analysis) and interactive visualization. Our novel visualization takes advantage of a high resolution display and given 3D information to focus the operator's attention to interesting/ critical areas of the observed area. This is realized by embedding the results of automatic scene analysis techniques into the visualization. By providing different visualization modes, the user can easily switch between the different modes and can select the mode which provides most information. The system is demonstrated for a real setup on a university campus. © 2011 IEEE.
