We present the Bio Scene Graph (BioSG) for visualization of biomolecular structures based on the scene graph system OpenSG. The hierarchical model of primary, secondary and tertiary structures of molecules used in the organic chemistry is mapped to a graph of nodes when loading molecular files. We show that using BioSG, displaying molecules can be integrated in other applications, for example in medical applications. Additionally, existing algorithms and programs can be easily adapted to display the results with BioSG. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

In this paper we present a novel method to evaluate guidance systems and navigation solutions for public infrastructures based on an immersive virtual environment in combination with a mobile eye tracking system. It opens new opportunities for wayfinding studies in public infrastructures already during the planning phase. Our approach embeds an interface for natural locomotion in the virtual environment offering significant advantages related to the user's spatial perception as well as physical and cognitive demands. Accurate measurements of position, locomotion and gaze within the virtual environment enable a great simplification for the analysis of eye tracking data. We conducted a study with participants that included virtual and real world scenarios within a train station. First results exhibit similar behaviour of participants in the real and virtual environment, confirming the comparability and applicability of our method.

This paper describes the design and the implementation of a distributed object repository that offers cultural heritage experts and practitioners a working platform to access, use, share and modify digital content. The principle of collecting paradata to document each step in a potentially long sequence of processing steps implies a number of design decisions for the data repository, which are described and explained. Furthermore, we provide a description of the concise API our implementation. Our intention is to provide an easy-to-understand recipe that may be valuable also for other data repository implementations that incorporate and operationalize the more theoretical concepts of intellectual transparency, collecting paradata, and compatibility to semantic networks. © The Eurographics Association 2010.

computer graphics is a very active field, with new knowledge being published every day at a high rate. There is, therefore, some pressure to regularly review our teaching contents and adjust accordingly. Among the courses on a standard curriculum, the introductory computer graphics course is very often the door for students into the exciting area of computer graphics. It is also the opportunity to attract and engage the best talent for the field. In this paper, we address the question of what we are teaching in the introductory computer graphics course as a community. Our main motivation was to find out how our peers are teaching this first course and use this knowledge to ease the redesign of our introductory course. We have surveyed 20 introductory computer graphics undergraduate courses from higher level educational institutions from around the world. Our source of information was purely online available resources, such as the weekly list of topics, usually provided by the professors themselves. We gathered and processed this data using a bottom-up approach. The final top level list of subjects and percentages for the introductory computer graphics courses is as follows: Rendering (75%), Modeling (14%), Animation (7%), Fundamentals (3%), and visualization (1%). Although there is a common body of knowledge and proposed standards for an introductory course in computer graphics, we also noticed considerable variation among institutions. We believe this survey will be helpful for institutions considering designing a new introductory course from scratch or redesigning an existing one. © 2017 The Author(s) Eurographics Proceedings © 2017 The Eurographics Association.

Digitization of cultural heritage is of growing importance, both for its preservation for coming generations in the face of looming dangers of natural decay or intentional destruction, and current generations, that increasingly have access to virtual cultural heritage for interactive exploring or scientific analysis. These goals can only be achieved by 3D replicas at reasonable quality and resolution, to come as close as possible to the original. This brings about several challenges to overcome. The challenge of digitizing huge numbers of artefacts is addressed by CultLab3D, the first fully automatic 3D digitization system. Another challenge is the size of objects, as each digitization system is designed for a certain optimum measurement range, leaving which results in loss of quality. Due to optical and mechanical constraints, most systems are not able to faithfully reconstruct objects under a certain size limit in their full geometric detail. Historic coins are one good example, where the deterioration of the surface structure in most cases has progressed to a degree that it not even is perceptible through the fingernail. This challenge is addressed by a modular extension of CultLab3D, the MesoScanner, which is a structured light system that breaks limits in depth resolution through a mechanical lens-shifting extension, allowing physically shifting of fringe patterns on top of the well-known multi-period phase shift method. This is where this work adds two major improvements: First, the signal to noise ratio and thus reconstruction quality has been improved significantly through several algorithmic processing steps. Second, the physical limitation of the measurement range was removed using a 2D actuator steering the object mount, thus allowing for a measurement range at theoretically arbitrary size. Manual classification of artefacts is a labor intensive process. Based on 2D images and 3D scans of - for example - ceramic shards, we developed a pattern recognition algorithm which automatically extracts relief features for each newly recorded object and tries to automate the classification process. Based on characteristics found, previously unknown objects are automatically corelated to already classified objects of a collection exhibiting the greatest similarity. As a result, classes of artefacts form iteratively, which ultimately also corresponds to the overall goal which is the automated classification of entire collections. The greatest challenge in developing our software approach was the heterogeneity of reliefs, and in particular the fact that current machine learning approaches were out of question due to the very limited number of objects per class. Urbanization is an increasing global trend resulting in a strong increase in public and individual transportation needs. Accordingly, a major challenge for traffic and urban planners is the design of sustainable mobility concepts to maintain and increase the long-term health of humans by reducing environmental pollution. Recent developments in sensor technology allow the precise tracking of vehicle sensor information, allowing a closer and more in-depth analysis of traffic data. We propose a visual analytics system for the exploration of environmental factors in these high-resolution and high-dimensional mobility sensor data. Additionally, we introduce an interactive visual logging approach to enable experts to cope with complex interactive analysis processes and the problem of the reproducibility of results. Effective visual exploration of large data sets is an important problem. A standard technique for mapping large data sets is to use hierarchical data representations (trees, or dendrograms) that users may navigate. If the data sets get large, so do the hierarchies, and e?ective methods for the navigation are required. Traditionally, users navigate visual representations using desktop interaction modalities, including mouse interaction. Motivated by recent availability of lowcost eye-tracker systems, we investigate application possibilities to use eye-tracking for controlling the visual-interactive data exploration process. We implemented a proof-ofconcept system for visual exploration of hierarchic data, exemplified by scatter plot diagrams which are to be explored for grouping and similarity relationships. The exploration includes usage of degree-of-interest based distortion controlled by user attention read from eye-movement behavior. We present the basic elements of our system, and give an illustrative use case discussion, outlining the application possibilities. We also identify interesting future developments based on the given data views and captured eye-tracking information. Copyright © 2016 by the paper's authors.

Additive manufacturing (AM) has enabled control over heterogeneous materials and structures in ways that were not previously possible, including functionally graded materials (FGM). However, typical computer aided design (CAD) systems – mainly based on boundary representations (B-Rep) – are not built for modeling and representing spatially varying material information, which are the key features for designing FGM parts. While volumetric representations (V-Rep) such as tetrahedral or hexahedral meshes, trivariate splines or subdivision solids can hold the necessary FGM information, they are by default not compatible with existing CAD models. Thus, the capabilities of AM motivate enhancing CAD systems to support volumetric material allocation and distribution. We present an interactive, intuitive and efficient interaction concept based on grading features and transition functions for augmenting CAD models with smooth volumetric material gradients for multi-material fabrication using our system called GraMMaCAD (Graded Multi-Material CAD). This concept has the advantage of being extremely versatile, since the material property functions are left to the arbitrariness of the user, who is free to modify their definition as needed. By providing interactive preview modes, the system allows for efficient exploration of the volumetric gradation of the designed FGM part. We fabricated two functional examples that demonstrate the usability of the system and show the ability to quickly augment models with functionally graded material transitions. Recent improvements in 3D acquisition and shape processing methods lead to increased digitization of 3D Cultural Heritage (CH) objects. Beyond the mere digital archival of CH artifacts, there is an emerging research area dedicated to digital restoration of 3D Cultural Heritage artifacts. In particular several methods have been published recently that, from a digitized set of fragments, enable their reassembly or even the synthesis of missing or eroded parts. Usually the result of such methods is a set of aligned but disconnected parts. However, it is often desirable to produce a single, watertight mesh that can be easily 3D printed. We propose a method based on a volumetric soft union operation that can be used to combine such sets of aligned fragments to a single manifold mesh while producing smooth and plausible geometry at the seams. We assess its visual quality and efficiency in comparison to an adaption of the well-known Poisson Reconstruction method. Finally, we provide practical insights on printing the results produced by our method on digitized fragments of real CH objects. © 2016 The Author(s) Eurographics Proceedings © 2016 The Eurographics Association.
