Integrating online identity management tools in a complete social media literacy curriculum for engineering and technology students

The landscape of existing online identity management tools is identified and reviewed in order to make easier for students and for the educators who include online identity management in their curricula. A total number of 51 websites were identified during the months of July-September 2012 as online tools that can help with the management of online identity. After finalizing the list of tools, the research team reviewed each website several times and produced a coding scheme containing the major features that emerged from the data. Analytics reports can provide snapshot automated analyses of a users online activity, social graph, and/or influence. These tools are useful for online identity management because they reflect back to the individual a synopsis of their online activity. Quite a few sites provide information and tools for search engine optimization. The only challenge remains making engineering and technology students aware of their existence and utility.

This paper evaluates different state-of-the-art approaches for implementing an X-ray view in Augmented Reality (AR). Our focus is on approaches supporting a better scene understanding and in particular a better sense of depth order between physical objects and digital objects. One of the main goals of this work is to provide effective X-ray visualization techniques that work in unprepared outdoor environments. In order to achieve this goal, we focus on methods that automatically extract depth cues from video images. The extracted depth cues are combined in ghosting maps that are used to assign each video image pixel a transparency value to control the overlay in the AR view. Within our study, we analyze three different types of ghosting maps, 1) alpha-blending which uses a uniform alpha value within the ghosting map, 2) edge-based ghosting which is based on edge extraction and 3) image-based ghosting which incorporates perceptual grouping, saliency information, edges and texture details. Our study results demonstrate that the latter technique helps the user to understand the subsurface location of virtual objects better than using alpha-blending or the edge-based ghosting. Music information retrieval (MIR) is small, but fast growing discipline. It aims at extraction of relevant information from music in order to improve the work with multimedia information systems. A popular approach in MIR is to apply signal processing techniques to extract low-level features from a musical piece. However, in order to create helpful applications, high-level concepts, such as music harmony, need to be examined as well. In this paper, we present a new model for understanding music harmony in computer systems. The proposed model takes the challenge of filling the gap between music theory and mathematical structures. Inspired by the computational complexity, we then derive a new term, harmonic complexity, that can be evaluated for a musical piece, and we test it on a genre classification problem.

We propose a novel solution to the generalized camera pose problem which includes the internal scale of the generalized camera as an unknown parameter. This further generalization of the well-known absolute camera pose problem has applications in multi-frame loop closure. While a well-calibrated camera rig has a fixed and known scale, camera trajectories produced by monocular motion estimation necessarily lack a scale estimate. Thus, when performing loop closure in monocular visual odometry, or registering separate structure-from-motion reconstructions, we must estimate a seven degree-of-freedom similarity transform from corresponding observations. Existing approaches solve this problem, in specialized configurations, by aligning 3D triangulated points or individual camera pose estimates. Our approach handles general configurations of rays and points and directly estimates the full similarity transformation from the 2D-3D correspondences. Four correspondences are needed in the minimal case, which has eight possible solutions. The minimal solver can be used in a hypothesize-and-test architecture for robust transformation estimation. Our solver also produces a least-squares estimate in the overdetermined case. The approach is evaluated experimentally on synthetic and real datasets, and is shown to produce higher accuracy solutions to multi-frame loop closure than existing approaches.

Online social networks have found a significant increase in their popularity in recent years. All the networks have community structure, and one of the research problems mostly frequently tackled is the discovery of communities. An overlapping community is a network structure that allows one node to be a member of multiple communities. The method presented in this paper aims at detecting overlapping communities in social networks, and its novelty lies in that it combines with the Microblog User Model (MUM) which can reflect the interest of the user accurately. First, the MUM network, which is an undirected and weighted network, is constructed by computing the similarity among MUMs. Afterwords, Overlapping Community Detection based on MUM (OCD-MUM) is performed to partition the network. A community stops expanding when the fitness function reaches a local maximum. The communities detected are locally optimized. A user's interest is not only decided by the MUM, but it is also affected by the communities the user belongs to. The community model can reflect the interest of the community. The MUM is updated with community model of its communities, and therefore the interest of the user can be predicted by these communities. Our experiment result shows that OCD-MUM has a higher modularity Q value than traditional methods and the predicted interest is more close to the real world situations.

We introduce a method that can register challenging images from specular and poorly textured 3D environments, on which previous approaches fail. We assume that a small set of reference images of the environment and a partial 3D model are available. Like previous approaches, we register the input images by aligning them with one of the reference images using the 3D information. However, these approaches typically rely on the pixel intensities for the alignment, which is prone to fail in presence of specularities or in absence of texture. Our main contribution is an efficient novel local descriptor that we use to describe each image location. We show that we can rely on this descriptor in place of the intensities to significantly improve the alignment robustness at a minor increase of the computational cost, and we analyze the reasons behind the success of our descriptor.

In this contribution, we present a semi-automatic segmentation algorithm for radiofrequency ablation (RFA) zones via optimal s-t-cuts. Our interactive graph-based approach builds upon a polyhedron to construct the graph and was specifically designed for computed tomography (CT) acquisitions from patients that had RFA treatments of Hepatocellular Carcinomas (HCC). For evaluation, we used twelve post-interventional CT datasets from the clinical routine and as evaluation metric we utilized the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC), which is commonly accepted for judging computer aided medical segmentation tasks. Compared with pure manual slice-by-slice expert segmentations from interventional radiologists, we were able to achieve a DSC of about eighty percent, which is sufficient for our clinical needs. Moreover, our approach was able to handle images containing (DSC=75.9%) and not containing (78.1%) the RFA needles still in place. Additionally, we found no statistically significant difference (p<0.423) between the segmentation results of the subgroups for a Mann-Whitney test. Finally, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a segmentation approach for CT scans including the RFA needles is reported and we show why another state-of-the-art segmentation method fails for these cases. Intraoperative scans including an RFA probe are very critical in the clinical practice and need a very careful segmentation and inspection to avoid under-treatment, which may result in tumor recurrence (up to 40%). If the decision can be made during the intervention, an additional ablation can be performed without removing the entire needle. This decreases the patient stress and associated risks and costs of a separate intervention at a later date. Ultimately, the segmented ablation zone containing the RFA needle can be used for a precise ablation simulation as the real needle position is known.

This work proposes a novel way to represent uncertainty on the Lie group of rigid-body motions in the plane. This is achieved by using dual quaternions for representation of a planar rigid-body motion and proposing a probability distribution from the exponential family of distributions that inherently respects the underlying structure of the representation. This is particularly beneficial in scenarios involving strong measurement noise. A relationship between the newly proposed distributional model and the Bingham distribution is discussed. The presented results involve formulas for computation of the normalization constant, the mode, parameter estimation techniques, and a closed-form Bayesian measurement fusion.

The paper reports a study that investigated the effect of egocentric versus exocentric view in an educational animation whose goal was to teach undergraduate students the various tasks that a construction manager performs in the field. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the effect of perspective view on students’ subject learning and preference. Findings show that while students have a preference on perspective view, the perspective view does not have a significant effect on students’ learning outcomes. © Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2014.

In this paper, we describe the development of an interactive virtual environment whose objective is to improve undergraduate students' representational fluency in surveying mathematics. One problem with teaching surveying is a general decline in the math skills of students taking surveying courses, and a decline in the students' ability to transfer these concepts into practice in the context of surveying. In the paper, we explain how an interactive virtual environment that presents multiple interconnected representations of math and geometry concepts - dynamic visual objects, symbolic or numeric expressions, and written and verbal explanations simultaneously on the computer screen - can help students acquire the math and geometry skills necessary to perform surveying tasks such as chaining and triangulations and coordinate calculations. © ASCE 2014.
