In this work we describe our approach to efficiently create, handle and organize large-scale Structure-from-Motion reconstructions of urban environments. For acquiring vast amounts of data, we use a Point Grey Ladybug 3 omnidirectional camera and a custom backpack system with a differential GPS sensor. Sparse point cloud reconstructions are generated and aligned with respect to the world in an offline process. Finally, all the data is stored in a geospatial database. We incorporate additional data from multiple crowd-sourced databases, such as maps from OpenStreetMap or images from Flickr or Instagram. We discuss how our system could be used in potential application scenarios from the area of Augmented Reality.

This research utilized an experimental research method. The purpose of this research study was to determine the effect of ink sequence (KCMY vs. YMCK) of multicolor offset printing on the color gamut and over print quality. The experiment was conducted in a CTP based workflow for offset printing. A custom layout of 17.5" x 23" test target was used and linear plates were produced by using the CTP device. After the plates were made for the KCMY and YMCK printing sequence respectively, a pilot test was conducted to achieve the target solid ink density (SID) values according to GRACOL SID standard (or in-house SID standard). During the pilot test of KCMY printing, 500 sheets were printed. This pilot test of printing is only to bring the SID values to a standard level. Once density values had been achieved according to the standard ink density (SID) values, the press was run continuously without operator interference and another 100 (N) test sheets were printed, from which a total of 80 (n) sheets were randomly selected for the analysis. The sample size was selected in order of the specific confidence interval (α = 0.05). A random sampling technique was used to identify the sample size because of the large size (N = 100) of total population. The findings of this research, comparing color gamut volume of KCMY vs. YMCK ink sequences revealed that there is no significant major difference of which ink sequence is better over the other. However, in comparing, the YMCK sequence gamut consists of higher gamut volume, and smoother gamut shape than the KCMY sequence. The findings make it difficult to draw conclusions regarding dot gain, because each printing sequence was executed by using the same printing conditions (press, paper, inks, etc.).

Color Management Workflow (CMW) uses a set of hardware tools and software applications working together to create accurate color between various input, display, and output devices. The purpose of this study was to determine the colorimetric deviation of multiple types of spectrophotometers. A total of five types of instruments were used in the experiment. Modern printing technology has evolved from the craft oriented field toward a color management science demanding greater color reproduction and control among the devices used in the print and imaging industry. This is of importance to the graphic communication educator as the tools used to control those interface are increasingly software applications and instruments that invite the knowledgeable student to manipulate (or use) the default settings to achieve superior color results. In seeking to empower our students to better understand the color deviation, this work examined the use and operation of multiple spectrophotometers in a laboratory environment, similar to, upon entering into the workplace, a student would encounter. Hence for a student to consistently deliver a quality print, managing and controlling color from the input device to a multicolor output device is a major concern for the graphic arts educator. Color can be viewed as a science where the optical aspects of color are quantitatively analyzable and measurable with the use of multiple types of color measuring devices, such as: Colorimeters, Densitometers, and Spectrophotometers. However, this study examined only the use of spectrophotometers. Applying these devices with our students will heighten their recognition as to the importance of proper color workflow.

Creating panoramic images in real-time is an expensive operation for mobile devices. Mapping of individual pixels into the panoramic image is the main focus of this paper, since it is one of the most time consuming parts. The pixel-mapping process is transferred from the Central Processing Unit (CPU) to the graphics Processing Unit (GPU). The independence of pixels being projected allows OpenGL shaders to perform this operation very efficiently. We propose a shader-based mapping approach and confront it with an existing solution. The application is implemented for Android phones and works fluently on current generation devices.

Large scale, doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind power plants (WPP) are being designed to support grid voltage regulation. Based on the transmission level interconnection, this paper proposes a novel adaptive secondary voltage control (ASVC) strategy to improve network voltage profile and transient response performance. The control strategy combines algorithms for reactive current division, automatic gain controller and online voltage tracking scheme. The control strategy is tested in a system consisting of DFIG based Wind Park and conventional generation units, such as hydro and diesel synchronous generators, connected to a weak grid. Network voltage profile improvement achieved by ASVC is verified by simulation and compared with the conventional line-drop Secondary Voltage Control (SVC) and Primary Voltage Control (PVC). Since the system relies on the measurement and communication network, the time delay is modeled and considered. Improvement of the transient response of the controller is verified by simulation and comparison with a system without automatic gain control algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed control strategy is tested in both steady-state and under extreme system contingencies.

The development of complex, powerful classifiers and their constant improvement have contributed much to the progress in many fields of computer vision. However, the trend towards large scale datasets revived the interest in simpler classifiers to reduce runtime. Simple nearest neighbor classifiers have several beneficial properties, such as low complexity and inherent multi-class handling, however, they have a runtime linear in the size of the database. Recent related work represents data samples by assigning them to a set of prototypes that partition the input feature space and afterwards applies linear classifiers on top of this representation to approximate decision boundaries locally linear. In this paper, we go a step beyond these approaches and purely focus on 1-nearest prototype classification, where we propose a novel algorithm for deriving optimal prototypes in a discriminative manner from the training samples. Our method is implicitly multi-class capable, parameter free, avoids noise over fitting and, since during testing only comparisons to the derived prototypes are required, highly efficient. Experiments demonstrate that we are able to outperform related locally linear methods, while even getting close to the results of more complex classifiers.

In this paper we propose a framework for out-of-core real-time rendering of high-quality textured archaeological data-sets. Our input is a triangle mesh and a set of calibrated and registered photographs. Our system performs the actual mapping of the photos to the mesh for high-quality reconstructions, which is a task referred to as the labeling problem. Another problem of such mappings are seams that arise on junctions between triangles that contain information from different photos. These are are approached with blending methods, referred to as leveling. We address both problems and introduce a novel labeling approach based on occlusion detection using depth maps that prevents texturing of parts of the model with images that do not contain the expected region. Moreover, we propose an improved approach for seam-leveling that penalizes too large values and helps to keep the resulting colors in a valid range. For high-performance visualization of the 3D models with a huge amount of textures, we make use of virtual texturing, and present an application that generates the needed texture atlas in significantly less time than existing scripts. Finally, we show how the mentioned components are integrated into a visualization application for digitized archaeological site.

We present a novel fusion method that combines complementary 3D and 2D imaging techniques. Consider a Time-of-Flight sensor that acquires a dense depth map on a wide depth range but with a comparably small resolution. Complementary, a stereo sensor generates a disparity map in high resolution but with occlusions and outliers. In our method, we fuse depth data, and optionally also intensity data using a primal-dual optimization, with an energy functional that is designed to compensate for missing parts, filter strong outliers and reduce the acquisition noise. The numerical algorithm is efficiently implemented on a GPU to achieve a processing speed of 10 to 15 frames per second. Experiments on synthetic, real and benchmark datasets show that the results are superior compared to each sensor alone and to competing optimization techniques. In a practical example, we are able to fuse a Kinect triangulation sensor and a small size Time-of-Flight camera to create a gaming sensor with superior resolution, acquisition range and accuracy.

This paper proposes an autolinking approach to help analysts investigate spatial details of suspicious sections from an overview temporal visualization. Analysis of spatial-temporal network security data takes place both conditionally and in sequence. Many systems use time-series curves to visualize the temporal perspectives of the data and maps to show the spatial information. To identify anomalies, the analysts frequently shift across different visualizations. In essence, time-series curves provide a temporal overview of data, and the map anchors the locations for the users to drill down for details. Anomalies may be reflected in a time-series curve as a jump, a dive, a peak, or a valley. With the autolinking mechanism, after the analyst selects a segment of a curve, the system can automatically highlight the related area on the map for further investigation. This approach adopts the slicing operation of the Online Analytical Process (OLAP) to find the basic granularities that contribute to the overall value change. This approach is implemented in our award-winning visual analytics system SemanticPrism. In this paper, we describe its structure and demonstrate three examples of use with the VAST 2012 Minichallenge 1 data.

We present a software solution for planning and simulating radio-frequency ablation (RFA) treatment for patients suffering from hepatocellular carcinoma. Our software provides the graphical front-end for the results of the EU FP7 project IMPPACT. The main planning application was designed to assist with the identification of minimum-risk setups for RFA probes and generation of evaluable 3D representations of the predicted necrosis zones. Patient-specific mesh data describing the involved anatomic structures are used to individually parameterize the simulation procedure for personalized results. Our software supplies tools for extracting the required anatomic meshes from computed tomography (CT) images and for specifying custom intervention protocols. Data collected during simulations allow for detailed illustration of expected effectiveness and progress of heat-induced necrosis over time. Our software was evaluated positively by medical personnel and has been successfully put into practice at two independent European clinical sites. © Springer-Verlag 2013.
